If you're a role-playing fan, you've heard of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . Chances are, you've played it, too.
And you're hardly the only one. Bethesda has announced that the critically acclaimed title has sold over 20 million copies since its initial launch on November 2011. We don't know if that statistic refers to sell-in (shipped) or sell-through (sold) but either way, it's a really big number.
Skyrim was a massive accomplishment and, despite a few glitches and bugs, has earned the admiration of many RPG fanatics. The game shot out of the gate, selling 3.5 million copies in the first two days at market, and has since continued its popularity. In our 2011 Game of the Year Awards , Bethesda's gem landed Best Role-Playing Game, Best Multiplatform Game, and was nominated for Game of the Year.
Bethesda may be ready to announce Fallout 4 for next-gen consoles but thus far, we have no official details.
Related Game(s): The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
That's a lot of damn copies. RPGs are good stuff, well worth the expense.
This game was great and I still go back to play it occasionally. Glad that this game still continues to sell. I am however ready for the next fallout.
That news on PS3 versions freezing towards longer hours made me avoid this game. Maybe I should dabble anyways…..
yeah that was all fixed.
My advice: Go for the PC version if you can – the amazingly short loading screens in itself makes it the best platform for that game.
The load screens are like three-four seconds long, as opposed to the PS3 where you can sit there and spin those 3D objects (it's an interactive loading screen) 'till you know every nook and cranny of'em.
How well will my PC perform Skyrim?
Quad core i5 processor 3.65GHz (I'm not sure on the GHz actually)
GTX460 video card pumping to a 27" LED screen (I add the screen size because I notice slow down on some games if I play on bigger screens)
8GB Ram
I don't know what my HDD speed is, but I'm sure it's good enough.
Skyrim is a newer game, and I bought my video card 5-6 years ago. I can play FFXIV at max settings, but I actually dropped a few irrelevant things so I could achieve almost 60fps. At max, FFXIV gives me around 30fps, although sometimes heavily populated areas experience slow down to 15-20fps (which I hate)

I'd like to know the amount of RAM on that video card but regardless, I think the specs looks just fine and is well within the boundaries of "recommended spec" for Skyrim.
So you should *easily* be able to run it. Maybe not on max settings, but I'm sure the game will look and play just as good or better than other games you're used to play on that card.
Cause that's an important thing that often is forgotten in this "hardware rat race" of the PC world:
Newer games push the graphical boundaries more. But on any given card, newer games are very unlikely to look worse than the best games at the time when the card were new. And as the owner of that card you've never played a game with the visuals of a newer card on max settings, so relatively speaking the games will look splendid also on medium or even low settings, *compared to what you are used to*.
Cause how can one miss a bunch of ambient dust in the air or light flares that bounces off surfaces if one has never seen it in the first place? If you catch my drift.
So go right ahead. Skyrim will run like a charm on your rig.

Nice!
The ram on the video card is only 1 GB, by the way. I've looked into some others with 2GB recently, but they're still a little pricey for me right now.
1gb meets officially recommended specs of Skyrim. You should be well covered for enjoying that game. There's plenty of life left in your rig.
PC is probably better. Especially with the amazing mods you can get for it.
For me, this was the best home console game of the last ten years. With all it's glitches. I believe I have over 300 hours in and I'm still nowhere near finished. I'm still discovering new places. The scope of the game is amazing.
I have over 210 hours into it and I have none of the dlc. I'm waiting for the dlc to go on sale now that I have some money so I can start over and put another few hundred hours into it.
How much has uncharted 3 sold on the ps3 compared to skyrim? 🙂
Skyrim: 5.24
Uncharted 3: 6.25
Source: VgChartz.
The same source says that:
The Last of Us ~ 4.13 million
As we all know, TLoU has more GOTY awards than Skyrim. And maybe it will sell more than that game on PS3. There is still time.
Dragon's Crown had 0.4 million and Dragon's Dogma had 1.4 million.
I can't remember which ethird liked. Not that it matters… was silly to begin with.
@Bonampak
On top of that, TLOU is a brand new IP. Everyone knows what Elder Scrolls are, yet TLOU challenges. TLOU must be pretty exceptional, eh? 🙂

It's always been a mystery to me why Skyrim didn't sell more on he PS3. It sold significantly more on x360.
One could say that the x360 has a larger user base in the US so it's only natural, but here in europe it's the opposite: x360 is the underdog here. And Skyrim is huge over here as well.
I just don't get it.
Beamboom: More history, as I've often tried to explain to you. 😉
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind never came to a PlayStation console; it was exclusive to PC and Xbox. Oblivion was a year late to the PS3 and trust me, hardcore RPG fans (to whom this franchise exclusively caters) have no interest in waiting that long.
So, it's simple- there are far more Elder Scrolls fans who own Xboxes, just as there have always been more Final Fantasy fans who owned PlayStations.
I know you say so. But still, Ben. Still! This is one of the highest rated – and hyped – game in the *history* of gaming, a milestone on the gaming timeline, a giant in the landscape of gaming goodness.
It's not some niche Japanese culture thing that requires an upbringing on a japanese console or a strange affection for boys with spiky hair to fully appreciate, or some other release that got lost in the flood of releases.
It's f'ing SKYRIM we talk about here!

Yes, but you're still only talking about one game. Most consumers need more than one title as an excuse to plunk down $300 for a new game system.
Besides, you made your own point- it's not a JRPG. PlayStation was the undisputed home of that niche genre, so if you owned a PlayStation, you might not be as interested in Western-style RPGs. You certainly weren't in the PS1/PS2 generations.
To many PlayStation owners, The Elder Scrolls was just another "PC RPG" that tried to be like Dungeons & Dragons (because all Western RPGs felt like they were trying to emulate D&D in those days). That wouldn't be a correct analysis but the stereotypes were deeply ingrained.
I bought an Xbox for Morrowind, but not ONLY for Morrowind, for example. The bottom line is that Elder Scrolls fans, more often than not, are on the Xbox side of the line.

Well, they obviously are, that much is sure. And you must be right, I see no other explanation. There must be a bunch of PS3 owners who prefer the Japanese style so much that they choose to ignore even the biggest of the western releases. What else can it be, really.
I just think it is so weird. I don't get it. I don't get what goes on inside the head of those people.
To me it's like if I should not buy RDR because I'm not that into westerns, never even try Uncharted because I don't like it when things are too strict, or LBP because platformers are not my thing. I mean, come ON, are we gamers or not!?
(I'm not talking about Skyrim as a system seller. I would never buy any platform for a single title. I am talking about the existing ps3 users).

The spikey haired dude's game sold over 10 million copies. Had nothing to do with love for Japanese culture, I can assure you. :p
@Beam: I think the other issue is that when Oblivion came to PS3, the PS3 was getting bad press and cost a ton of money. By the time PS3 finally became more main-stream, Oblivion was an old game that couldn't grab many new people. And with the next one not even hitting the console, I think the over 4 million of Skyrim on PS3 is an accomplishment!
Afterall, anyone already huge into those games are used to playing it on PC or 360.

Ahahahahahahaha.
You guys…. are STILL having that same argument over and over again?
Wow. Get a room already.
Is the PS3 version worth getting? I just don't want to break my controller because the game froze 20 times in 5 minutes, lol.
Apparently the issues have been fixed. But I still don't have confidence. I may get the PC version.
The issues have been fixed, and they were over-exaggerated in the first place.
Though if you have a decent gaming pc then I'd recommend getting it for pc simply for all the mods that can add hours of gameplay as well as new armours, weapons, and many other game enhancements.
It is not the freezing that will make you want to throw your controller, it is the loading times and wait screens.
Big Dan is right. The difference in loading time is *radical*. On PC the loading screen is merely a blink, on the PS3 it takes forever.
I was not fan of this game at first, but I puchased the Legendary Edition on sale and it was fun. Repetitive but fun. A lot of bugs, expected from such a large game, but overall a great undertaking.
Dare I say it, I enjoyed Fallout 3 more and that was glitchy to a point of unplayability. But Fun. Context was great too. Can't wait for the next one. Hopefully it will not shift to an online game.
Keep playing!
I've put hundreds of hours into this game and it still amazes me that I can play it today and still find places I've never seen. I never really had the glitches a lot of people had but I did have the backwards flying dragon which was really interesting to say the least.
I'm glad this sold so well..now get to work and give us Fallout 4 =)
I really wish some publishing executives would pull their heads out of their butts and realize that a game doesn't have to have AK-47's and be based around online multiplayer to sell well.
Congrats to Bethesda. Thats some epic numbers. I wonder how many copies were pirated on PC though.
fingers crossed for a ps4 port of the legendary edition
Arena announcer from Oblivion:
"You've earned it!"
one of THE most overrated games in the history of the industry!
buggy as f*ck, just like any other bugthesda game.
and pretty boring as well, gave the term fetch quests a whole new extreme!
not to mention the boring simplistic combat.
only good thing about the game were the amazingly detailed environments, and chuck a few graphical mods onto this thing and its probably THE best looking game out there!
nice to see it doing well though, more money to put into fallout 4, and also proves wrong the BS stigma that your game has to go pew pew to sell well!
I was going to say, the first half of your comment made me question your level of intelligence and mental stability…. but who am I kidding, I starting thinking that about you a long time ago.

I bought the PS3 version on 11-11-11 (D1) and never had any of the problems I'd read about. Then again I didn't level up like a mad man either. Took me a long time to get to level 61. Anyway, one must overlook a lot to love that game but I do. The combat is terrible. Frequently swatting at air as you go through your oppenent. Constantly getting stuck in sneak mode during fights too. A lot of grinding as far as smithing and alchemy. But through it all I fell in love with the damn thing and play it frequently to this day. It's gorgeous and quite funny. I've had a dead dragon in the middle of Riften for about a year. I've come over a ridge to find two giants and a saber cat fighting a dragon. I've Fus Ro Da'ed people off mountain tops… Never ending fun. Must buy that game all yous that haven't.
Wow. Didn't know how well this game had done. Congrats! I love the stuff Bethesda puts out.
One day I will go back and finish all the DLC I downloaded. LOL I haven't even finished the Fallout 3 DLC yet.
I cannnnnnnn't wait for another Bethesda game. Probably one of my favorite developers, if you can overlook their previous inability to develop stable games for the PS3. The PS4 should make that MUUUUUCH easier for them.
