PSXE Poll Update: The Last Of Us Leads Reader Voting

Gee, we thought it'd be a little more of a horse race.

During the first round of voting for the PSXE Reader's Choice for Game of the Year 2013, one title stood alone: Naughty Dog's widely revered The Last Of Us .

Landing more than double the votes of the runner-up game, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V , TLoU is the obvious front-runner heading into the final round of voting. Could any other title give it a potential run for its money, or have the readers already spoken? Is the last round just a formality?

Well, let's see what happens. GTAV, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider also made it into the final round; the latter two titles just barely beat out Gran Turismo 6 , but none of the other games were really in the running. It's a little surprising not to see Bioshock Infinite do better; most really seemed to adore that game when it first came out. Of course, that was way back in March and gamers have been known to have short memories.

Anyway, time to vote one more time, so get to it!

I think it's a forgone conclusion around here. I'll vote for Tomb Raider this time. The more I think about it the more I loved that game, while not technically superior to The Last of Us I thought it had a lot more interesting, varied gameplay and sweet locales going on.

Oh man, not me. The fact that seasons were included in The Last of Us in many different locations made it superior in that category. Much more to gawk at.

Hunting the deer is a chapter I will never forget.

I'm more of a tombs and caves kind of guy (love archeology). The deer scene was cool because they had left a certain plot point hanging during the whole thing. I kept losing the damn deer though. I guess living in Minnesota those kinda of scenes are normal to me though.

Huh… I thought there was going to be a second preliminary round offering ten more contenders to make a final ten next week. Damn. Anywho, TLoU wins, though I do yet need to play Tomb Raider.

Since I can't play Tomb Raider again (going to wait and get the PS4 version) I'm playing Underworld and I redownloaded my freebie Guardian of Light.

definitely tomb raider then.
its the only game there that has consistency, and excels in every area.
bioshock for instance gameplay wise was a mixed bag.
the rails sections were oh so f*cking awesome!
the vigors were a little step back from previous, and so was the core gameplay.
what made bioshock so great was the laying traps, the hacking cameras and turrets, the arriving to a conflict and planing out your approach instead of just running in guns blazing and vigors at the whim.
story was no where near as good as the last 2 games either.
pretty much same goes for every other game there.
GTAV, well, one minute your pulling a guys house down with your truck, and the next your playing sea dock simulator 5.
YAWN!
TLoU a seriously predictable cliched story, and the gameplay really did not feel very survival.
i was expecting it to play out allot more like i am alive, now thats a proper survival game!
TR is probably the most well rounded game out there.
it did nothing perfectly, but that really does not matter when everything is done almost perfectly.
and at least its consistent throughout the whole game, no one minute your pulling a guys house down, and the next your taking your test to become a crane driver!

i agree completely with the outcome:
The last of us was easy the best game for me.
I had bioschock it was ok, i finished it and sold it.
Tombraider is the kind of game i really like, but i found it to easy

The Last of Us has definitely got my game of the years vote ! I absolutely adored that game and January can't come soon enough for the DLC to appear.
I have done everything I can to make sure everyone I know has played the game and the highest praise I can give it is that I even completed the online hunter/firefly aspect to get the platinum and I really don't enjoy multiplayer as a dedicated single player but felt that it was a must play.
I enjoyed tomb Raider but found it far too easy so it comes in at number 2 for me

I've voted but I feel a bit of a cheat because it's the only one of those I have played.

Okay I have only played one of the games on the list but have watched the gameplay. So I will vote but it is purely based on what I have "only" played and what I have …observed.

Yep, I thought we were going to get some other contender games, but I think the kid on the block that was … naughty this year will win it. 🙂

Keep playing!

It's an obvious pick. Too good.

You'll get similar results when you ask a group of 8 year olds to choose between a chocolate bar and a head of uncooked broccoli.

When you operate a PlayStation fan site, and when practically all of your visitors are fanboys,it's only logical for them all to vote for a Sony exclusive title.

Seriously Ben, these polls have really been annoying me, as the results are always so biased. While Last Of Us isn't my cup of tea, there's no denying that it's a great game. It deserves fo win. However, even if Last Of Us was a mediocre game, it'd still get most of the votes, as the voters are diehard Sony fans.
Because of that, I just can't take the Readers Choice award seriously, as it was a losing battle from the start.

To me, I see this award as a joke. Like, if a large Xbox fan site did a readers choice award, like PSXE, chances are, Halo or Dead Rising 3 would take top spot. Doesn't matter if the games are bad, good or great. They'd vote for them because they are exclusive to their favorite system. While I do believe that The Last of Us deserves top spot, I can't help but wonder how fair the poll truly is.

Just a tiny rant that'll probably make people hate me. Going to end this here.

I'd have to disagree..primarily because most users of this site own multiple consoles. If you haven't noticed most users here care about games rather t than allegiance to Sony. With that said, i haven't played a game this year that is better than the last of us on my ps3 or xbox. I loved gta and ac black flag but last of us was far deeper with story and production. Hell some games still aren't a good as Alan Wake in my opinion

If your argument is true, then where is Gran Turismo 6, Beyond: Two Souls, and God of War: Ascension? If it was a Xbox fan site, then the GotY would probably have CoD:Ghosts in the running.

I can't agree with you because the other 4 games in the top 5 (all multiplats) beat out other exclusives.

It also isn't a surprise that the best of the best are typically exclusives for their own consoles. I'm also quite sure an XBOX exclusive should not be an option on a PSX website, either.

And if you are going to raise that argument at all, this is the worst time you could have picked. There are other times it would make more sense. It's not like TLOU is a difficult selection for anyone to make for this type of thing.

Don't forget, this is a reader's choice award. PSXE's goty is separate.

yeah um i was a bit torn but i just cudn't justify anything other than TLOU personally

The poll is kind of redundant. It was pretty obvious months ago from the tenor of the comments that this was the inevitable result. If The Last of Us had just been named of the year with GTA V as runner-up then no one would have questioned it. I didn't really care for TLoU but even I can admit that it's an impressive piece of work; impressive but not my thing.
