Everyone needs a great nostalgia trip for the holidays.
For those who are old enough to remember the days of the Super Nintendo vs. Sega Genesis wars ("Genesis does what Nintendon't"), and perhaps even before that era, the latest Time Tech feature will bring a tear to your eye.
This would be a good time to share your favorite memories of the good ol' days. What do you remember most fondly from the 8-bit or 16-bit eras? What side of the fence were you on during the aforementioned Nintendo vs. Sega battles? What was your favorite original GameBoy game (and don't say Tetris 'cuz everyone picks that one)? What game were you just so proud to conquer? Which games did you and a friend spend eons trying to take down? Can you easily recall cheat codes, such as the iconic infinite lives one for Contra ?
I have a great many, of course. I still remember seeing Pong for the first time. Even at the age of 4, I was mesmerized because I never thought a human being could actually control something I was seeing on a TV screen. I remember digging out a 12 x 14-foot square piece of earth for my father (it was for a new wood shed) just so I could earn the original Nintendo. I remember staying up late to try and take down another Rygar level. I remember the virtual impossibility of Ghosts 'n Goblins . I remember playing Final Fantasy VI with a friend, back when such a thing was a novelty. I remember buying the Genesis off a friend and playing a full season of Tecmo Super Bowl III . I remember skipping levels in Super Mario Bros.
And really, that's just the tip of the iceberg. 🙂
Never cared for Tetris. In the 8 and 16 bit days I was a Nintendo geek after I left Colecovision and Atari behind. I remember many sleepovers where friends and I would stay up late trying to reach and conquer Mike Tyson, destroy the world in Rampage, or do speed runs of Mario games, or survive Castlevania. My favorite might be turning off the TV when my parents put me and my brother to bed to fool them into thinking we had turned the Nintendo off, then after they went to sleep staying up and playing quietly for another hour.
There was making fun of the guys in Faxanadu "the pants-pullers" who looked like they were always pulling their pants down. Contra co-op never got old. Later on I loved how my SNES version of Mortal Kombat made my friend's Genesis one look like pixelated sh*t, even if I didn't get the blood.
But Genesis had Sonic, and I eventually got one and spent many evenings in Sonic 2 not doing my homework.
When winter came around it was time to locate proper sticks about town, pretend to be Link, and split open snow boulders all over the neighborhood.
The memories are endless really. Wasted time sitting around playing video games? I think not, not with those memories.
I was a hardcore Sega fan. I wanted nothing to do with Nintendo, and as a result I have never played a Zelda game. Oh well.

Yeah, in those days the console wars were serious business.
I wasn't a fan of a particular company/console back then. Mostly because the consoles weren't my own. My big brother had a SNES & my cousin had a Genesis. So I was able to enjoy the best of both worlds.
Even as a young kid, I thought the console wars were silly. However, I did enjoy the Mario VS Sonic rivalry. There was no internet back then, but I was able to see a lot of fan art in person and in magazines. Fan art of Sonic or Mario performing fatalities on each other.

If you have a PS3 go buy 3D Dot Game Heroes, bam you got yourself a Zelda.
NES was already out when I was born and that was my first introduction to video games. We didn't have one until I was 4-5 years old, but we had the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/ World Class Track Meet cartridge, as well as SMB2 and 3, Contra, Super C, Rad Racer, and Wayne Gretzky's Hockey. There might have been some more, but those are the ones I remember.
The NES belonged to my brothers, though. Gaming wasn't something of my own until I bought a Genesis II off of one of my cousins in '96. I had 6-Pak, which had Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi, Columns, Golden Axe, and Super Hang-On. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remains, to this day, one of my favorite games of all time. (In fact, I just bought the recent remaster of this game for my old Xperia Play.)
Man, all this nostalgia… Think I'm gonna hook up my Genesis when I'm back at my parents for Christmas.
I was confused when the guy talked about the 5th generation as if there a "shit show" and too many players in the game. Only thing I remember in video games after the Super Nintendo/ Genesis wars was the Playstation and the cool ahead of their time computer games. Nintendo 64 was never a big player and was marketed towards little kids. infact nintendo 64 always felt like it was stuck in between 4 and 5 generation. The 5th generation was the first big generation that every one played had since original NES and set the format for future consoles. More PS1s were sold then Snes GEN and N64 combined. Come on Time Magazine get it together.
There was also the Sega Saturn, which I got instead of Playstation because I still didn't believe that Sony could come in and obliterate established companies like Nintendo and Sega. Boy was I wrong.
I love Sega. I remember play Sonic the Hedgehog and just blasting through the levels. I would (and still do) get scared when the music would start playing saying Sonic was under water for too long. So scary. I would play with my brother or sister as Tails. So much fun.
I was the only one in my family who could actually beat Vectorman. I loved that game. I had the final boss pattern down pat. My brother thinks he is better than me, but he's not. lol
And then I would play NHL 94 with my brother. And some basketball game with him. Such great times.
And Streets of Rage. I loved that game.

i had a Nintendo and a snes my friend had a sega system i enjoyed both
Nintendo my favorite games were Jaws FF1 dragon Warrior 1 and Megaman
Sega i enjoyed Sonic
Snes i enjoyed secret of mana FF4 FF6 chrono trigger and yes the game everyone hates FF Mystic quest
as for my favorite gameboy game well it was pokemon red
On a side note Ninja Gaiden for the NES has a really good story
on another note my favorite snes game is Seiken dentetsu 3 oh how i love playing it on a snes emulator
Cool. But they glossed over how the Sega Genesis maintained a U.S. lead over the SNES. Yes, the SNES dominated worldwide sales but the NPD reported in 2004 that the Genesis was believed to have had more lifetime sales in America.
EDIT: Funny how that didn't translate to a runaway Sega Saturn success in the states….

I remember in grade 1 or 2 or something, for spelling, I had to use the word "needle" in a sentence. My mom kept that assignment because I wrote, "Last night, Mega Man beat up Needle Man."
Teacher marked it wrong, but I still think I aced it.

This may seem a little odd but I remember having the pad with the circles on it for that Olympic game, me and the majority of the kids on the block would gather together and try to beat each others scores. I would put that thing at the end of my bed, grab on to the head board and go to town…truthfully the game sucked but thinking about that brings happy tears to my eyes.

The Legend of Zelda, Kuby's Adventure and the Super Mario Bros Duck hunt combo and an 8bit NES to run them were the first games my sister and I ever owned. That was a nice Christmas. All my other friends were getting the SNES while we were stuck blowing into our outdates NES, but it's still a memory I'm fond of.
