Sega Will Let Atlus Be, Invites Them To Work On Dormant Sega IPs

Amidst a great deal of turmoil Atlus just carries on.

The developer of such awesome titles as Catherine , the Persona series and Shin Megami Tensei, and publisher of hits like Demon's Souls and 3D Dot Game Heroes recently faced a bit of ownership tension. I'll spare you the details; basically they wound up being owned by Sega.

As throngs of people waiting for word on Persona 5 looked back at the questionable decisions Sega made this last generation there was plenty of speculation about what might be done to Atlus under new direction.

In the end Sega appears to have chosen the wiser path. The totality of their changes seem to be the introduction of Naoya Tsurumi, Sega's Chief Operating Officer, as Atlus' new president. So where does that leave the creative direction of the company? Nowhere scary thankfully. In fact, it should leave gamers hopeful.

We know Persona 5 is on the way and Sega seems happy to mostly leave Atlus to their own devices, as reported by Siliconera.

Tsurumi: “The plan is to have Atlus and Sega continue shining as brands, while aiming to increase their degree of independence.

Similar to the studio we’ve acquired from overseas, they’ll continue managing their own brands and IPs, and making them bigger… Think of it as us telling them ‘Continue working on your own IPs with pride and confidence—the sky is the limit.'”

That isn't the end of the good news though, Sega also appears to be open to letting Atlus work on Sega's own franchises.

“While we have no intention of forcing this, we’d definitely love to have them utilize any of Sega’s dormant IPs."

There are plenty that haven’t been active. [laughs] However, the new company just recently got started, so there’s nothing on the table for now, but we’ll definitely be giving it more thought.”

Just a few days, this morning I'm more focused on getting info to the readers who haven't seen it here than nabbing "hot" news stories.

News to me! Thanks! Without posting this, I would have one day had a moment of "Sega and Atlus? ….. when the fudge did that happen?"

Now I get to be "that guy" in my group of friends who tells them it's old news when they're surprised about it. And my attitude will disgust them.

I did not know Altus was in trouble. I love Dragon’s Crown and Altus is the reason we have a North American version of Demon Souls.

I don't think they were/are in trouble. I think that they just wanted the extra resources that Sega could obviously provide. Sega probably made an offer that Atlus would've been foolish to refuse (this remaining mostly independent and unmolested probably being part of the deal).

This is more about Sega being in trouble and picking up an asset to help turn things around…

Atlus was never in trouble, Index Corporation, their parent company was. They were investigated for fraud and ended up filing for bankruptcy and Sega later bought the company at auction.

Fine news, I say. Sega has always been a publisher of awesome games and many of their internal projects are pretty damn good too, so I have no fear that their fingers in Atlus' pies will bring strife and this only affirms that. Now bring on Persona 5.

P.S. Dave, did you get this news from me?

Atlus is one of the best Devs this generation. Even amidst all the shooting games, they continued to make games that were unique, and different. Since Atlus pres is now bossing around people as Sega I expect to see some sort of good changes. Hopefully Sonic fans can stop being disapointed too

Hmm… I'd love to see Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, and Panzer Dragoon all get an Atlus fueled resurrection!

Call me crazy but I'd love to see a proper remake of the Genesis fighter, Eternal Champions done … Keep it 2D or 2.5D …

Valkyria Chronicles. A new one for the PS4 and I would love the first one ported to the Vita in all of its glory. I think games like this (and XCom) are really well suited for handhelds.
