Call Of Duty Began Its Life As The “Medal Of Honor Killer”

Believe it or not, there was a time when Call of Duty wasn't the mega-blockbuster franchise it is today.

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, EA's Medal of Honor was one of the industry's leading first-person shooters. In fact, as Infinity Ward artist Justin Thomas told MCV , the original CoD was created to be a " Medal of Honor killer."

" The project was actually named 'MOH killer' until an official name could be found. We were focused more on fun than success, with the idea that if it was fun, it would be successful. We were just going to make a great game, and do the things better than we did on previous projects. The great thing is that a team learns from previous projects. "

Thomas further explained that the team really didn't want to "duplicate Medal of Honor ." They even started with the concept of a "super soldier," a James Bond-like character who took on top-secret missions during World War II. This changed when Infinity Ward opted to tell the story from the perspectives of three different characters. And ultimately, maybe the name of "MoH killer" was fitting.

Medal of Honor never seemed to recapture the glory of those early years, and Call of Duty just kept getting bigger and bigger. Now, here we sit, with CoD being by far and away the biggest name in the shooter industry, and MoH being temporarily shelved. We thought the reboot in 2010 was great, but last year's Warfighter was a major disappointment.

Hey Damien, when you played Lightning Returns did her health recover after every battle?

Can't rightly remember. All of the battles aside from the last were against the little Niblet things that did no damage and were killed in one hit.
I did find this nugget over at Siliconera, which makes it seem as though it may not: "More artwork below shows Snow’s soldiers… and restaurant called Banquet of the Lord. There’s a practical reason for this, you can restore Lightning’s hit points by eating at a restaurant."

Wouldn't need to do that if they did…

EDIT: Done some digging. Apparently you can regain health by idling in the field too, so I really don't think that there is auto regen at the end of every battle.

Good point. Man I feel like a beggar, hoping for basic common sense RPG elements these days.

Anybody else find it funny that Battlefield 2 was subtitled "Modern Combat" well before CoD4?

It was the first to go modern between the two, but it also went to the future setting as well later.

Medal of Honour Frontline started it for me. My stepfather got me it, watched me play it and would have a shot at it himself. Good vibes.

Ironically, Battlefield is attempting to be the Call of Duty killer, and so far…it seems to be working.

History is repeating itself.

Aye, CoD went from a more realistic and gritty take on WW2 to an arcade beer-and-pretzels shooter. I loved the original CoDs, but CoD3/W@W were the last with any of its original heritage. The new CoDs are still good as pieces of software, but don't stand out for me personally.

"We were focused more on fun than success, with the idea that if it was fun, it would be successful"
that is EXACTLY why games back then were so much better than games of today.
they were made out of a passion, not to fill peoples pockets.
to be FUN!
only if developers thought like that today……….

*yawns* who really cares :/ To me all military first person shooters are the same. Its only a matter of time before all military first person shooters are killed off period or one can only hope.

I remember friends tellingmy MoD was a better game series back on the PS2. My impression is CoD came in to its own more so when they started o focus on the MP.

Keep playing!

Yeah COD got bigger and bigger and the gameplay got worse and worse, pulling other game-company's to that same simpel gameplay all for the money.MOH brought les money than COD but had a much better gameplay and a much better athmosphere:the sounds of the old guns, you fighting nazi's it was great and not wave after wave respawning enemies so that you got more action like in COD.
Thankfully there are stil some game-company's that don't choose the easy money-way,and showed that you can also make a lot of money with GOOD gameplay.

MOH 2010 was a great game. Not good enough to reclaim the FPS crown of course – but still a great game. Warfighter was ok. EA shooters are better on the PC – COD on consoles.
