Believe it or not, there was a time when Call of Duty wasn't the mega-blockbuster franchise it is today.
Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, EA's Medal of Honor was one of the industry's leading first-person shooters. In fact, as Infinity Ward artist Justin Thomas told MCV , the original CoD was created to be a " Medal of Honor killer."
" The project was actually named 'MOH killer' until an official name could be found. We were focused more on fun than success, with the idea that if it was fun, it would be successful. We were just going to make a great game, and do the things better than we did on previous projects. The great thing is that a team learns from previous projects. "
Thomas further explained that the team really didn't want to "duplicate Medal of Honor ." They even started with the concept of a "super soldier," a James Bond-like character who took on top-secret missions during World War II. This changed when Infinity Ward opted to tell the story from the perspectives of three different characters. And ultimately, maybe the name of "MoH killer" was fitting.
Medal of Honor never seemed to recapture the glory of those early years, and Call of Duty just kept getting bigger and bigger. Now, here we sit, with CoD being by far and away the biggest name in the shooter industry, and MoH being temporarily shelved. We thought the reboot in 2010 was great, but last year's Warfighter was a major disappointment.
