Should Naughty Dog Consider A Jak And Daxter Reboot Again?

It was interesting to read about how Naughty Dog initially set out to create a Jak and Daxter reboot, and ended up giving us The Last Of Us .

Looking down the road, it seems the talented developer will have its hands full with the likes of Uncharted 4 and possibly another game set in the TLoU universe. But might they still want to return to the dynamic platforming duo? And might we end up seeing it in the new generation? I mean, who doesn't want a J&D title on the PS4?

Naughty Dog has made it plain that they want to do it, and they've sounded nothing but regretful when talking about how they failed at the attempt. Then they give us encouraging yet cryptic updates like "never say never." So, it seems the team would be very interested in creating such a project, but I'm wondering if there are enough fans left out there. I'm willing to bet that the majority of gamers want them to stick with the newly established IPs, and let's not forget that platformers don't have the same commercial value these days.

However, given the developer's continued success, I'm betting they'll continue to grow. And with more people, more resources and more time, they just might produce the reboot or sequel we've all been waiting for. Of course, it may be on a slightly smaller scale budget-wise, and it may be priced to sell on the PlayStation Network, but that's okay. Provided it hits all the right chords, is a proper homage, and isn't too short, the long-time fans ought to be pleased. At least, I hope they'd be pleased.

Ummm… like Ratchet and Clank.. I think Jack and entourage need to be left behind… for now. New games, new stories (if possible) and variety. Granted I do miss the platformed game genre.

Also, the first JD game was the best of all 3.

Keep playing!

Agree I think Jak 1 was the strongest in terms of gameplay and the world exploration and stuff like that.

Jak 1 was amazing no doubt! but i just feel like Jak 2 had the winning edge. The Jak and Daxter series were my childhood!! For me Jak 3 was a let down compared to the other 2, but it was still a solid game! part of me wants another game, but another part doesn't for the fear of tarnishing the series

Jak & Daxter (1) really was the best of the whole series – and that's say a WHOLE LOT, since I adore the series soooo soooo much.

It really is the most original of the series, where as Jak 2 & 3 can be seen taking more from the GTA series and all – which is alright, but…JAK & Daxter just had that uniqueness of a whole new world opening up and all. I really miss playing around with red/yellow/blue eco and all when I went into jak 2 and 3. Also the world didn't seem as…well natural and adventure like.

I actually would like to see a reboot of it.

It's close to the Kingdom Hearts series for me – and honestly we need a lot more fantasy/action-adventure oriented games in an industry JUST FULL OF mature games. Not saying at all that I have something against mature games like gta or tlou – love them…just wishing for a nice balance. That's all.

Yes.

Look at what the last attempt by Naughty Dog to make a Jak and Daxter reboot got us.

No matter what it is that they come up with, whether it turns out to be an actual Jak and Daxter reboot, or something completely out in left field, Naughty Dog is sure to amaze.

Their creativity is almost unparalleled by any other studio. And that's not a slight against the other studios out there, because there is some seriously talented folks in those other studios (name your favorite one). The other studios out there just don't churn out hit after hit like Naughty Dog does.

In my opinion, they are currently the King Midas standard of developers, but that doesn't mean that another studio can't dethrone them if they start resting on their laurels.

ND is a great studio but I wouldn't say they are more creative than some of the other elite devs out there. They did have a good run this gen, though.

Haha, yeah if they tried to reboot J&D and came out with TLoU then they should just keep trying. lol

NO. Make another Last of Us.

I feel the same! With that said, I personally hope it is set within the same universe and not with the same lead characters, Joel and Ellie.

I felt their narrative closed off in the best way possible. To make a sequel would be a disservice my eyes.

I agree. I'd much rather see any follow up take place before Joel and Ellie's story or way after or as you said with a set of new characters. In an entirely different area of the country

maybe Sony should just assign some other studio to the ip. Ready at Dawn may be good for it.

They got their own new IP, The Order: 1886 so let them toil away at it first 😛

Whatever Naughty Dog is making, I'm excited. I'm looking forward for their next game. But it will be more exciting if it's a new IP and a concept that they have not done before.

I think they should but only if it is a reboot and done in the vain of Jak and Daxter 1. Otherwise I think that Jak 2 and 3 were more about the guns and didn't feel as fun to play as Jak 1.

Series over, plot resolved, and reboots are annoying. I would love for them to make another platformer in a similar style though.

yeah as much as i'd love to see a reboot or sequal to that beloved series i know that platformers done have the commercial strings that unchartered and battle field and assasins creed or even far cry cos i know most kids and teens except the long time fans aren't into that stuff as much anymore and it's sad that it probs wudn't have the same sales but maybe same crit applause that it once had and chances are ND probs make another new 3rd person/action/adventure the sorta stuff they been doin with the ps3 but you can always hope but jak and daxter will always live on in our hearts i think so anyway

happy gaming =)

I see no value in this, Jak & Daxter 1 was a fantastic game, but when Jak II decided to copy Ratchet & Clank and basically become a third person shooter over a platformer, I just lost interest.

I just don't think J&D has the appeal of Mario, Sonic, even Crash COUGHT*HINT,HINT*Cough…. The problem is also that the Jak series is really story driven, I never played the PSP game released after 3, but I just cant see there being much room for the story to go. It's not like there was main antagonist that can keep return with evil intentions like other platformers, it was about the mystery and after Jak 3, that was pretty much explored.

I would like Naughty Dog to work on something new next gen, then go back to the Last of Us, I think some time now would do that series wonders, I dont want an instant sequel for the PS4. Uncharted 4… I don't know if the prospect would excite me as much now… I think I would really like something new, but we'll see.

id love to see another J&D game but not from ND.
they already have enough franchises they need to be working on, give it to a developer who does not have so many previous commitments.
id much rather have ND working on uncharted and TLoU, or maybe a totally new IP.
surprise us like TLoU did.

I'd say a spiritual successor would be more up their alley these days. They've clearly moved on to a more mature angle with their projects, and so I think going back to J&D would be a bit of a mistake.

I just really hope that their first PS4 project is neither The Last of Us 2 nor Uncharted 4. I want something new again.

No.

I really wouldn't mind if TLoU was a one time deal. Not that i wouldn't love more of that universe, but it would have to have different lead characters to work in my mind and it would be a huge accomplishment to follow Joel and Ellie. But they'd probably find a way.

Everytime they make a new IP it's better than the one before in my opinion. So i'd rather see them do that instead. But, as long as they keep making games i'll be happy.
