To many long-time, dedicated fans of the franchise, it doesn't make much sense.
As most of us know, David Hayter will not be reprising his legendary role as Solid Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain . Instead, Kojima and Co. have selected accomplished actor Kiefer Sutherland to play the part. Debi Mae West, the voice actress for Meryl Silverburgh in the franchise in question, doesn't understand this.
In a recent Up At Noon segment on IGN, West had only one question when she learned that Hayter wouldn't be playing Snake: "What the fu** is going on?" We've heard lots of people say that.
"I had no idea. I don’t get it. Honestly, I don’t know if anyone knows this story but when we did the first Metal Gear, they were going to re-record it and David actually asked for some money because he deserved it. We all deserved it and they didn’t want to pay us any more than the regular voice over rate. He challenged them to match his voice and they couldn’t. And that’s the thing – he is that character. So I don’t understand…is Kiefer gonna try to sound like him…I mean, I get that their voices are in a very similar place…"
We're not sure how it's going to work, either. We certainly respect Sutherland and he can probably do a damn fine job, but when one actor plays a certain role for 15 years, it's tough to work in another voice. Do you think Hayter should've returned, or are you okay with a new actor taking the part? Me, I'm not sure just yet…

In the same way I was shocked that Joel wasn't played by Nolan North. Actually Baker sounds quite similar to Nolan in some ways. I was almost certain Nolan played the Booker in Bioshock as well.
However Nolan Made a really nice appearance in TLOU that I didn't see coming. My hope is that Hayter will pop up somewhere in MGS5 as some character, whether its young solid snake or someone else.
There is no way Kojima could be this much of a dink to Hayter. I mean especially when you consider the flimsy reasoning behind casting Keifer as the Boss.
I dunno I'm hopefully optimistic about hayter being somewhere in this game and this all being Kojimas ultimate troll.
PS.
This is kind of like the batman and joker voice actors. Mark Hamil is THE best joker voice ever hands down. Kevin Conroy is Batman in his voice. Whenever I watch new animated cartoons and it isn't voiced by them I cringe a bit. Not that the new actors are bad but just that it sounds wrong to me.

Baker played Booker actually, his problem with accents was evident again.
Thats what I mean. When I watched the one promo thing for Bioshock Infinite the grunts and groans of Booker made me think it was Nolan North. Then I found out it wasn't him, even though he sounded very similar in some of his dialogue as nathan drake.
Yeah, as Joel, I didn't hear much Texas. A little I guess. But to me, he sounded a lot more like my friend in Indianapolis. Actually, it's pretty much the same accent.
I think it was a bad move, I know it isn't a fiscal reality cuz everyone has bills but it'd be cool if all the other voice actors banded together and threatened to walk away without him.
Keifer is a fine actor, much props, but in reality fans don't ask for much except a koji productions game and the characters they love.
Every single time I watched an episode with Keifer on it, I said to myself that he easily could do Snake´s character voice. I guess Hideo saw that too! I remember that Hideo san once said he was a fan of 24, so maybe there's when he got the idea.
Now speaking with my heart, obviously I didn't wanted David to part ways with MG series. But I still think Keifer will do a good job.
I think it'll be like Blacklist, weird for the first 30 minutes and then you get used to it.
or Cole maybe
Its a terrible move and I dont think Keifer can do it justice, not because he isnt a good actor (althoigh I dont think he is) but because its not Hayter. I bet he cost more money too.
This is probably one of those people know him deals.
New things always take time to adjust to. Keither Sutherland will do a fine job and I think he will bring more subtly into the facial part of the acting (assuming he 100% is the VO actor).
Otherwise considering they're mainly just voices and you don't need to do a ton of high stunts with older actors then you really didn't need to change the actors…One reason why I despise watching older actors in action films. They say a couple lines and then stunt double for a minutes. Repeat lol
This is a load of bollocks, Hayter should be snake as usual.
Ok so there goes the last shred of respect I had for Hideous Kojima… Sorry, no offense Kiefer but, No…. Just, just no. Don't Japanese people hold tradition in incredibly high regards? 15 years, 600 MGS games (yeah exaggerating) and just "poof, your an ashtray". Maybe Kojima really is done with MGS like he's said 3 times already.
I keep saying Konami is pushing things, and Hideo is giving in. Whats been going on the past few years doesn't seem like him.
Theres a Metal Gear REMAKE coming, its just a way to distinguish SOLID Snake from BIG BOSS.
BIG BOSS in MGS4 was in his late 60's,BIG BOSS in MGS5 is in his late 40's so the change from david hayter as a young man to keifer as a middle age man to peter doyle as a(very lethal)senior citizens is acceptable as long as theres a Metal Gear REMAKE imho!!
Even if Kojima is being forced to do this and giving in, that's still pathetic, imo. I'd understand if this was somebody who's in a tough spot and likely couldn't get another job but it's not like Kojima, one of the legendary figures in gaming, couldn't get another job in the game industry if he told his bosses at to Konami to shove these idiotic ideas right up their asses where they belong.
Hayter should continue to play Solid Snake. I'm okay with Sutherland playing Naked Snake. They already used a different voice actor for Big Boss in MGS4. So why not in MGS5?

I agree with you,sir!

Same here though Naked Snake was noticeably older in MGS4 than he is in 5. But we don't know how this story will span so I'm not rushing to judgement. I'm sure Sutherland will do just find.
I sense a metal gear revisit to zanzibarland in which David hayter will voice SOLID Snake and keifer sutherland will voice Big Boss aka NAKED Snake aka PUNISHED Snake..
Thats all this is…..a way to distinguish SOLID Snake from BIG BOSS for an upcoming REMAKE of the very first Metal Gear that released on the MSX way back in the early 90's!!
Oh i remember now, meryl was saved by Big Boss when she was young.I don't care either way,I play Metal Gear always in Japanese, the way it's meant to be played.

Are there any significant differences we're missing out on?
If you like a voices which fits perfectly to the characters created by kojima and if u can see the videos of mgs4 in english and compare it with japanese and you'll see in which characters have more expression
In absolute truth I would rather have Hayter in the his normal position on MGSV. But it won't be too hard to make believe that Big Boss's voice would change to something like Sutherland's after a coma. After all Solidus and BB in MGS4 didn't have Hayter's voice and that was fine with everyone.
It sure would be nice to have some closure as what really went down with the change. Was it really Kojima's choice? Was it Konami's choice? Financial? Bad disputes? we may never know.
Konami clearly thinks bringing in a famous american actor as a voice actor, that it'll up the sales on the xbox.
Maybe there was been a rough relationship with Hayter. Starting with him demanding more money(which is fine if he felt he deserved it) ending with his screen play for the MGS movie being rejected.
I think Koji wanted an experience actor that could bring facial expression as close to reality as possible now that they are using advanced motion capture. I don't know how good Hayter will be at it, but I assume Kiefer is better at it.
I also don't know if it would be weird if Kiefer only did the motion capture and leave the voice to Hayter. Whether that was a decision or not, I don't know, but it's the only conclusion I can think of other than personal reasons.
Whether this is a good move or not, I honestly have no clue. I don't have Kojima's mindset, and he's much more proven than any of us are, so his decision is something we should just trust and go with and see how it goes.
The only disappointing outcome of this is if it was really indeed a personal issue and not for the sake of the game.
no Hayter, might as well remove Snake from the game.
i've never been a big fan of MGS and only played two MGS games.
the last being MGS4, MGS 5 just wont be the same without Hayter
This franchise is turning to sh*t ever since Konami decided it loves MS' checkbook. I don't think it's a coincidence that a popular actor from a popular American tv show has been made the new voice of Snake especially with Konami basically pushing MGS V like it's an Xbox One exclusive. It's sickening to me. I still think they can pull a good game out of their asses, just like Ubisoft did with Splinter Cell: Blacklist despite Michael Ironside not being involved. Won't be the same though and I truly believe there's only one guy who can pull off Snake. And this is an example of another stupid Japanese organization, just like Square and Capcom before it, that think going away from what it does well will make it appeal to more people, when in fact just like what's happening with the other two, the opposite will prove to be true. Americans liked RE, FF and other Japanese franchises more when these moronic companies weren't trying so damn hard to appeal to Americans. When will the people in charge at these places get some f'ing brains?

As much i like Kiefer Sutherland's voice i would still prefer David Hayter to be Snake as he has been all along. Its like when they changed Michael Ironside in Splinter Cell Blacklist i wasn't too happy about that either :/ Was an awesome game still but wasn't the same with a new voice actor
just put it this way, if the WORST thing about MGS5 is voice, well, then, its going to be a pretty f*cking awesome game!
as the saying goes plenty of bigger fish in the sea, who cares ive got bigger fish to fry.
Sutherland is NOT playing Solid Snake. He is playing Big Boss.
Solid Snake, I'm sure, will probably be played by Hayter in future installments.
I always laugh when journalists say that little error lol
well i just hope you metal gear fans like it hope ur not dis appointed
happy gaming =)
