It's just another option for those who have yet to enjoy the PlayStation 3 and its bevy of games. Lotsa games.
Sony introduced the 12GB Flash-based PS3 system to the European and Hong Kong markets last fall. However, at the time, Sony said this new model wouldn't be coming to North America.
And yet, as reported by Engadget , leaked advertisements from various retailers in the US and Canada are saying that 12GB version is indeed on the way. Canada's Future Shop had the unit selling for $200 (although the listing has since been pulled), and they've also found an image of the 12GB PS3 from a Kmart stockroom. That pic clearly shows "12GB/GO" and there's a "do not sell until" date of August 18. That's this weekend, if you've forgotten what day it is.
Gamescom kicks off on August 21 but presumably, this thing will already be available by that time, provided that date is correct. Still, expect an announcement during next week's industry event.
That's too small… that covers installations of a handful of games…
What's good about Flash-based memory?
It's cheaper than a hard drive so the price comes down on the console.
A solid-state (flash) drive is not (yet) cheaper than a hard-disk drive. Flash's advantages are that it's faster, it's smaller, and it uses less power.
At 12GB, sure, I think an SSD is cheaper than a 500GB hard disk, but Sony could also just go back to tossing in 60GB hard disks and save money that way as well.
You just have to look for deals. I have a 512gb SSD and it only cost me $300.
That's not bad, LV, considering it's solid state. Eight months ago I paid $70 for a 500GB HDD; I'm just saying if Sony's really looking to cut cost, SSD in and of itself isn't it. (Which is probably why they went with 12GB storage.)
reliability as well, since theres no moving parts you dont have to worry about its fragility like you do a HDD.
worst part about SSDs though is their write speeds are so goddamn slow!
i bought top of the range kingston hyperX SSD for my new PC when i built it, but got sick and tired of how slow copying things to it was so ended up selling it, getting a smaller one just for the OS, and getting a much faster HDD to store all my games instead.
im really shocked next gen systems are not offering SSDs though, it would help the streaming of data massively!
no more need to install games to local storage, and also much faster switching of applications and boot ups.
shame.
not really that much more expensive either as long as you know where to shop.
Shut up, it's cheaper.
Man you'd only be able to play a couple games at a time with mandatory installs. I just rolled through my console and killed all the installs for games I'm not going to play in the foreseeable future and came up with over 60 extra gigs.
Is the 12gb flash replaceable with a 2.5" hd?
You can add a hard drive, but I seem to recall something about the connector inside is not standard, meaning you have to buy a converter of sorts (from Sony, of course) to insert regular 2.5 drives inside this PS3. It was something like that.
Quite ridiculous if true, althugh nowhere as bad as on the x360 where you were forced to buy the hard drive from Microsoft.

I don't see how this can be true. As others have mentioned it's hardly enough room for a couple game install files.
I think it's more for people who haven't got a PS3 yet, and who only play a select few games.
You can still put a 2.5 hard drive into it, but you have to buy the bracket that holds the drive seperately. You can however pad it out which works fine too.
I grabbed one of these when they came out in the UK as a cheap second PS3. I had a spare 500GB drive lying around so I just put that in it.
When you put a hard drive in, it stops reading/writing from the 12GB flash memory.
no thanks.
it really is ridiculous the pricing of the 12GB system!
12GB, NO games or extra accessories = 298.
500GB + AC3 special edition = 330.
WTF!?
so im paying only 32 dollars extra for a extra 482GB and a game which retails for 89.36.
all i can say is typical $ony………….
What the heck are you talking about?
12gb ps3 = $200
add a $500 hard drive $60
you get 512 gbs for $260
Thats more than enough to get AC3
world does not revolve around the US, as much as you would like to believe it.
This article is about a NA release you idiot
and the whole point of the comment section is to voice your opinion you prick.
