When Gran Turismo 6 was announced, some gamers were surprised to learn that it would debut only on the PS3. A PlayStation 4 version might eventually arrive, but not until later (likely 2014).
So…why? Well, SCEE CEO Jim Ryan has tried to explain the reasoning behind this move over at the Euro PlayStation Blog . In so doing, he gives us a brief glance at the history of the franchise:
"You had GT1 and GT2 on PS One; GT3 and GT4 on PS2; then there's GT5 on PS3 and a space next to it. The difference between Gran Turismo and GT2 is unbelievable, but they're both on the same platform. The difference between GT3 and GT4 is huge. We're absolutely confident when GT6 comes, you'll see a big step change up from GT5 too. There's still a lot of potential on PS3 that a developer like Polyphony can really exploit."
And of course, there's the other obvious factor: The installed user base of the PS3 (which could be at 77 or 78 million, but Ryan cited as 70 million) is a little different than the initial user base of zero for the PS4. Furthermore, it's not like the PS4 won't have a great driving game right off the bat; MotorStorm developer Evolution Studios will bring us the very promising DriveClub . That one could be pretty darn special…
And remember, GT guru Kazunori Yamauchi has said that his team has a "PS4 version in mind for the future."

It makes sense. Each playstation did have 2 GT's. Plus, it will give incentive for people to buy the drive club? on the ps4. Who would buy that if gt6 was out at the same time? Its all smart planning but i know gt6 would have benefited from the ps4.
I wonder…
If I were to buy and play GT6 on PS3, would I be able to (somehow) transfer my save data from my PS3 to the PS4 (assuming GT6 comes out on PS4), seeing as how it will come out on PS3 for sure ad "maybe" on the PS4? Probably no one knows, but I mean, maybe they can figure something out.
No because it will be called Gran Turismo 7
I hope it's not half assed and you guys get some decent shadows 🙂
the ps3 needs its swansong, and what better game to do that than the biggest franchise in playstation history?
Killa: I only deleted your post because it was obviously in response to the many multiple repeated posts of Blank Line, which I just got rid of. 🙂
this sounds like a lazy rationalization rather than a strong reason
Not really its exposing GT6 to roughly 70 million PS3 customers.
Being lazy is not using capital letters and punctuation.
It makes perfect sense, and I can't wait to see PDI's effort on the PS3 go head to head against T10's work on the Xbox1..
@max
It should be epic, and I am totally fine with GT6 coming even if only temporarily to the PS3.
I kinda think it was a bad move to tell consumers that there may be a PS4 version. I'm sure that a very high percentage of people who own a PS3 will be buying a PS4. Do you really want a bunch of PS3 copies of the game lying around on the shelf due to the ones who want to wait for a better version? If one is never made for PS4 it will also anger customers that felt like they missed out on the game completely. Then, if they do decide to pick it up, they will be buying a cheap used copy or have possibly gotten rid of their PS3 by that point OR have a non b/c PS4. I'm just saying that you shouldn't tell your audience that something better is coming when you aren't even close to releasing the initial product.
