Insomniac Said No To Resistance 4 Due To Franchise Fatigue

A great many wanted Resistance 4 . Lower-than-anticipated sales of Resistance 3 may have impacted the decision to deliver another sequel, but that wasn't one of the reasons Insomniac boss Ted Price cited.

In speaking to GamesRadar , Price said his team "seriously considered" a fourth Resistance but they instead opted to create a new franchise (the co-op-driven Fuse ). Essentially, they wanted to do something new.

Added Price:

"One of the aspects of building franchises, and sticking with them for a long time is that even the team can get franchise fatigue. We had been pushing hard with Resistance from the beginning–which was a tough birth–to Resistance 3, which is a game we were all very proud of. With Resistance 3 it felt like we had capped off, or at least closed a major chapter in that franchise. So, a lot of the team was looking forward to doing something different."

Yeah, well, I still say they should make Resistance 4 for the PS4. I love that series. It's the only FPS that I really adored this past generation, and part of the reason was those awesome weapons… Resistance 3 had the single best arsenal of weapons in any game of the entire generation. Yeah, I said it. Not one was bad and they were all highly inventive and extremely effective. Diversity and imagination! So I wasn't fatigued, but whatever.

Well im ok with them taking a break from Resistance. However if they abandoned it then id be upset. I enjoyed the direction R3 went as opposed to R2 although I enjoyed them all. R:FoM was just awesome though, and it also had the best mp this generation and for some reason Insomniac just couldnt give the next entries that same magic. The co-op in R2 was great though!

Too bad seeing that R3 was the first Resistance game I really liked a lot.
The first game was a good start, enough so that I'd probably have R2 on my top 3 of most disappointing games this gen. That is my expectations were really high seeing that it had priority publicity from Sony and also Ted Price was also talking BIG about the tech behind it. While it had it's moments I walked away from that one feeling disappointed. R3, however, was one of the best FPS games I've played this gen.

Anyway, I'm sure Insomniac's decision to move to FUSE was also fueled by going multiplatform. EA was a perfect fit for this move because EA allowed Insomniac to maintain franchise rights even with EA as their publisher, as revealed in interview with Ted Price recently.

Totally agree on R3 being one of the best FPS of this gen. I thoroughly enjoyed the single player and co-operative story modes. Pity that gamers didn't show their appreciation with higher sales numbers.

While I'm unsure about how much I'll like Fuse, I agree with not continuing Resistance. If a good series just keeps going because it's good, it's bound to start falling eventually. Better move on to something else instead of milking it until it's bad or unprofitable.

Agreed. Let the series go out on a high note and with some dignity.

I'm not tired of Resistance. I haven't gotten enough of it. I love Resistance: Fall of Man and the third one. The second game was alright. I would love a fourth game.

It's not like Call of Duty, which is getting milked. These games came out years after each other and were different.

Going multiplatform is not always for the best.

They say its because of fatigue, but I bet if it got 5 times the sales we would be seeing a 4th

lol, I think they will be questioning this decision VERY soon.

I think that besides launching alongside other FPS Resistance 3 sold poorly because it was the wrong direction in terms of story. I loved the game (just added it to my permanent collection) but people wanted to take Hale through a proper trilogy story arc. The ending of R2 didn't make that impossible despite what some say.

It made it nearly impossible!

Nah (spoiler mode)

So what if Capelli blasted Hale in the head? He was already becoming more Chimeran than human and had gained regenerating health. He could simply have survived the wound (it isn't as if you hadn't taken bullets to the head during the game)and spent R3 on a suicide mission to stop the Chimera while dealing with his own horrifying transformation and gaining new abilities while he mutates.

hale ftw… I agree that a major chapter ended and the team might be fatigued. sounds like they havent abandoned the franchise, just giving it a well deserved break. im ok w that but i love resistance franchise. 1st one is still the best.. RFOM is what got me liking shooters, only other shooter i liked before rfom and probably the only pc games i enjoyed was unreal tournament. who knows, maybe we'll get an announcement in 2016

Fatigue? Resistance 3 was Epic ,way better than Killzone 3 and any other FPS at that time.

'gamer fatigue' caused it's lesser sales =p

(I feel cool generalizing a psycho-analyses for millions of gamers)

Slim chance of getting Resistance 4, sales were bad, Insomniac can't keep making games that doesn't sell many.
Besides, we don't even know if Sony wants to continue this franchise.

Here's hoping for another Resistance installment on the PS4. R3 rocked. Only problem I found with it was that it did nothing with the plot hooks from the R2.

oh bull f*cking sh*t!
there is ONE reason why R4 does not exist, and ONE reason ONLY!
* holds right arm up in air, puts middle and index finger together, and rubs them up against thumb*.
yup, you guessed it, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!
resistance never has been a big profit bringer, and never will be!
teds tired of making games for the sake of fans, he needs that back pocket lined!

There is something to be said for bowing out while there's still some interest in your IP. Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and pretty much anything that EA owns won't end until they've been hammered straight into the ground and six inches further. If they ever do bring it back, it shouldn't be until they have something new and fresh to say.

the only thing that hurt Resistance 3 sales, everyone was talking
about the up and comming cod game at the time.

as good as Resistance 3 was, there seemed to be a little something
missing.
maby it was a little fatigue showing?

Upcoming CoD, or BF3 or Uncharted 3 or even Dead Island that garnered a lot of interest from it's trailer and was released the same day.

So they said that Resistance as a franchise was fatigued, with all of its awesome weapons and interesting characters and cool settings?

Then they go and change the interesting looking Overstrike, and create a generic feeling TPS that follows all the same notes from all the TPS games of the past.

The logic here is non existent. Resistance was unique and interesting. Fuse has some interesting concepts but if the demo is an indicator it is just a generic TPS that is in reality kind of boring.

Unless there are some really fun unique encounters mixed into the game I don't think I will pick it up anytime soon. The story bits and dialogue were .. a little too hollywood "ooh ra" for me as well.

Running from a to b shooting enemies is so overdone and boring. Oh but some enemies you had to shoot from behind? Big deal, that is a gameplay mechanic from the late 80s.

I got the same feeling, Fuse felt like an early PS3 game from 2007. Pretty clunky and outdated.

3 games plus the PSP game were more than enough. Maybe later in the PS4's lifespan we could see another Resistance but I think it's time to move on with games like Fuse and any new franchises they are thinking of.
