So Gran Turismo 6 is coming this holiday season . And it's only confirmed for the PlayStation 3 at this point.
Franchise guru Kazunori Yamauchi said it could end up on the PS4 in the future, but I just have to ask- Would Sony and Polyphony have been better advised to wait?
Here's the way I see it- Gran Turismo is an extraordinarily important franchise for the PlayStation brand. It's a true-blue system-seller, through and through. Many early adopters of the PS2 picked up the new system knowing that GT3 was right around the corner. And when Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec launched the following summer, hardware numbers did indeed skyrocket. That's just one example; GT has typically translated to increased hardware sales for three generations of PlayStation consoles.
But coming out at the end of a console cycle like this…I dunno. Has anyone noticed that everyone is a little less excited than one might've anticipated? This is a super huge announcement, but I can't shake the feeling that it would've generated far more excitement had it been revealed as a PS4 exclusive or, at the very least, a cross-generation title. It could still end up as a cross-generation game, of course, but it won't be right off the bat. That's too bad, too, because GT is a series that has always shown off the power and potential of the PlayStation machine, and it would've been perfect for doing exactly that for the PS4.
GT isn't just a racing enthusiast's dream, it's also always a technical achievement of the highest order. What better way to push a new piece of hardware? Right now, the industry is suffering from definite generation fatigue (as seen in both developers and consumers, in my opinion), and we're looking to the next generation with eager eyes. Having such a huge title come out for the PS3, right around the time the PS4 will hit store shelves, feels somewhat anticlimactic, don't you think?
Related Game(s): Gran Turismo 6
Yes, I actually feel that way. However Drive Club needs it's time to shine. There are over 70 million PS3s which makes it almost a no brainer to release GT6 on the PS3. Give Drive Club time and then release the PS4 version. This way Sony makes more money which is a win/win for the Playstation faithful. I am with you though, it is very anticlimactic.
My thoughts exactly. Let Drive Club have it's moment in the sun. New IPs are always great offerings at launch on new consoles. Instead, get GT6 on Vita. Like pronto. Don't give us that mediocre GT we got on PSP. Give us a full fledged console experience like Criterion Games did with Need for Speed: Most Wanted.
I do as well. GT6 on PS4 would be better than watching a threesome.
I disagree lol

I didn't clarify what I meant by "threesome". 😉
It's the same as God of War Ascension, end of console incrementally changed game in a huge franchise made to extract enough money to make the PS3 generation a little more profitable than it would have been otherwise.
Waiting would have helped PS4 sales but since GT fans can be counted on to purchase every game there is more money in releasing it on PS3, then doing a special PS4 edition, then making a PS4 exclusive GT7.
Hey I have one question and I don't know if anybody has the answer at this point but here it is. On the first week of the PS4's launch is there going to be any PS3 games available on the cloud? I'm guessing just the ones on the PS store right.
Would PS3 cloud games even be compatible with the PS4?
I absolutley do not see it as anti climatic. This year is nothing but climatic for PS3. As in this is it's climax. We have nearly every current-gen goty holder weighing in this year on PS3. We have 2 time holder Naughty Dog launching a new ip. We have Quantic Dream launching there's. We have Polyphony Digital with Gran Turismo. We have Rockstar with Grand Theft Auto. We have Kojima with Metal Gear Solid V.. presumably. We just had Levine and Bioshock Inifinite. All we're really missing is Bethesda, Valve, and Bioware. I mean what the crap? This is the most exciting year of the heavy weights. I say the only people feeling this way are the PS4 early adopters. It's funny seeing so many who were 'plenty happy' with PS3 6 months ago now so amped to have PS4 they can't help but feel let down that yet ANOTHER massive franchise is hitting this year on PS3. Not an ounce of sympathy here folks.
..as for GT helping out PS4 early on. Sure, it will. It's already been soft-confirmed…. guess Drive Club hasn't won anyone over yet.
For me its about the games. The games you mentioned are great but the majority have or will release before the PS4 launches. So I will have played them as well The games on the PS4 appear fantastic and unfortunately those will keep me occupied with my new console. That includes Drive Club, which looks really good, and the detail in the cars is definitely a highlight. One which will stand up to GT well enough to suffice I presume.
"guess Drive Club hasn't won anyone over yet."
If that's the vibe now, imagine if GT6 were to launch around the same time on PS4's launch.

It shouldnt have been a PS4 exclusive, but rather release for both the PS3 and PS4. I think its a huge mistake to only release it for the PS3. I honestly probably wont be getting it only because of that. I want it for sure but based on whats coming out for the PS4 thats been announced, Im not sure my PS3 will be plugged in that often.
By saying it's a huge mistake by Sony, what sort of mistakes are they risking? Just curious.
I didnt say Sony made any mistakes. Although im sure they will play some role in GT6' release.
I dont think they should have waited. They will make more sales on the PS3 most likely than they would have made on the PS4. I think that sony knows this will sell millions of units on the PS3 and while it might sell some systems I doubt they could generate the number of copies sold on the PS4 as they will on the PS3.
Also knowing Polyphony they were working on this for many many years probably before they knew about the PS4 hardware. They might have staggered the PS4 gran turismo and started work on it a year or so ago or whenever they got the dev kit for it and that game will come out in a year or two.
That is just my hunch on the PS4 Gran Turismo which we will undoubtedly see in the future at some point.
No. Think about it. GT6 is easily going to sell over 2 million alone on the ps3. Now when they release it on the ps4 next year or something as the "True Edition" or something like that with 2600 more cars, 70 more tracks etc… They would be making more money. this makes sense
marketing standpoint no. me as a consumer yes.
im not getting it for ps3, it feels off. gt5's been the ruler of these seas for years and once ps4 hits everyone will inevitably play ps3 less
I can't understand anything else than that something must have delayed the development so much that this more or less is a consequence of an unfortunate string of events more than thoughtful planning. That the original intention were to release this game in time for the holiday season last year. That'd make *so* much more sense.
Racing sims are not for me anyway, but reagardless: Would I ever go buy a PS3 game while the rest of the world enjoys the PS4 launch titles? Fat chance. FAAAT chance.

In fact, now that I think about it, the more I beleive this was unintended – and that again leads me to think that this might mean that they even have to rush this release.
Think about it: We've heard *nothing* about this until now, just months before launch. Has this ever happened with a high profile title like this, ever before?
So it begs the question: Why? Could it be that someone has had to put his foot down and said "we *have* to release it this year – we can not wait longer. Time's up for this project!"?

well considering how long it took for GT5 to release, that's probably exactly how it is…
There's no way a PS4 version of GT6 has been in development long enough to release that soon…
The massive install base for PS3 will ensure GT6's success much more than relying on it to push console sales for the PS4.
I'm fine with waiting a couple years to play GT7 on PS4.
I think it's great that it's coming out for PS3. God of War 2 came out right when the PS3 launched. With all the new games coming out for PS3, it's awesome. The system has hit a point where all developers know how to properly develop for it. That's the point where the truly amazing games come out. It's too bad PS4 can't play PS3…either way, I wasn't planning on jumping ship for at least 2 years. Keep those games coming 🙂
it sounds reasonable to me….. 70 million Ps3 & still growing, a developed engine for Kaz & Poly to pick up where they left of……. its beneficial for the gamers & Sony.
look at Kaz work ethics man values quality & aims for perfection…… i rather wait another 3-4 years before seeing another GT on PS4 after GT6 if its from Kaz hands cause he will see a level of depth that seperates him from the rest.
said it before, GT aim is delivering sim capabilities on a console before its a game….. this new drivers club also needs to run a lane if its Sony exclusive….. cant have it matching with another GT entry on new console.
Sony claimed a 10 year life in Ps3…. last 6 years waves been coming but the tides soon reach & NO BODY RUNNING from the impact.
Yeah, the fact that this is a huge PS franchise, and it's launching holiday 2013, for it not to be a PS4 launch title is pretty moronic.
This combined with PS4 not being backwards compatible, early adopters are going to have to decided, "Do I buy it for the PS3, or do I not buy it at all and wait for a PS4 version." That's really going to split their audience. I'm betting on a high correlation between GT lovers and would-be PS4 early adopters. This could put some of those folks off from buying a PS4 until GT6 comes out for it. Or if they're impatient and buy it for PS3, they might not be so interested in getting a PS4 for a while.
Early PS4 adopters like myself will buy a second copy of GT6 for PS4 to compliment the PS3 version.
Or it could just be me that does crazy things like that. 🙂
Read my comment a few comments above yours for a concise counter-argument to your viewpoint.
I would LOVE to have a PS4 version of GT6, but it's not like my PS3 is going to magically vanish if GT6 only comes out on pS3, and I have a PS4 and PS4 games nearby at the same time.

no $ony would not of been better off holding it till the ps4.
1st they spent a metric sh*t ton of money creating GT5, that means the engine and all the tools which can only be used on the ps3 because of the 4s such different architecture.
$ony wants their money back, its as simple as that!
you dont go spending 10s of millions on creating a engine, then saying ok thats it were done lets go create a engine for the ps4.
thats how you send your company to the doll house!
$ony spent a metric sh*t ton of money on GT5, there not letting PD move to ps4 until they suck that cow bone dry!!!!!!!
2nd the ps4 is going to have a rough start sales wise, new consoles always do and the state of the world economy is not exactly going to help that.
$ony cant afford to let PD spend 10s of millions of dollars creating GT6 for the ps4 and find out it sells really poorly, simply because of the really low install base.
and that will happen!
sure GT sold quite well as a ps2 launch title, but the market has changed oh so much since then!
back in the ps2 days $onys only competition was the archaic nintendo!
thats like saying the only competition Ferrari has is Corvette!
yea, never really going to be threatening their sales………
now the market is a VERY different omelette.
3rd, kaz is a absolute maniac perfectionist!
GT6 on the ps3 means he already has a code base to go off on.
allot of the back end work is already done, he just needs to work on top from there.
hell the biggest most expensive most time consuming thing was the pro car models, theres already so many done so they can reuse those and spend a little time making a few more.
if it was for ps4 he would have to start from scratch all over again, and there is no way in hell this would be out by the end of next year, let alone launch window!
and last but not least theres driveclub.
$ony is trying to create itself a massive open world racing game.
there trying to turn it into GT, another massive successful franchise.
releasing GT6 as even a launch window title will kill drive club dead!
all in all $ony spent a metric sh*t ton of money on GT5, they aint letting that monkey out of their grasp till they have milked it bone dry!!!!!!!!!

This is one of those rare occasions where I actually agree with the majority of your comment.
(Performs self-check of sanity)
Yep, all of the screws are still firmly attached, amazingly.
I will wait for the XL edition to come out on the PS4 lol.
I think it should be a cross-generational game instead (which is what it sounds like they're planning).
The PS3 already have a larger userbase so it'll sell while PS4 owners could purchase the superior version if they have a PS4. That no one one's alienated and feels cheated.
No BW compatibility on the PS4 is the real problem here… A new system will be out but I won't be able to play this game on it… It's like Poly is saying: You don't need a PS4 yet. And Sony agrees somehow XD
Since they are so stuck-up on saying that when we buy a game we only buy a *license* and we can't do anything with it but *Play* and have absolutely no ownership of the data on the disc… They should make it so that *that license* is valid on all their systems. Like give me voucher for the free PS4 version with a way to transfer my save data. NOW that would make sense. But anything that would make sense for the consumer is always completely alien to the corporation. They just change their politics selfishly without thinking about us and expect we will like em for it. kill kill kill. 😀

No what they should have done is release GT6 Prologue for the PS3 this year, then release GT6 on the PS4.
Feels rushed though, does it to anyone else?
I'm confused. Would you rather have a great game in a series you love on a console you already own? Or would you rather have a great game in a series you love and a console that doesn't even exist yet and will cost several hundred dollars and you're just rooting for it to be successful for whatever reason?
I'll take the former option and be grateful.
-Arvis
Enthusiasts, will jump on the PS4, and want PS4 native games. But the mass market will lag and stay on PS3. I trust that Sony and PD have weighed their options pretty well.
I knew we'd have an ariticle on this. In short, nope. I'll try to keep it brief.
1. DriveClub, so it can't happen at launch.
2. GT6 PS3 much more profitable if you take in early sales potential.
3. If not launch, probably late 2014. Why wait that long if a PS3 version could be ready by this year, and by that time there could be another GT game.
Yes, it would've been great for those that are able to adopt early next gen AND if DriveClub never existed, but if Sony and PD wants maximum revenue, PS3 is the way to go.
I don't see what's wrong with it being made clear that the PS3 is no where near finished. Dust514 has just launched. The Last of Us, Beyond 2 Souls, Gran Turismo 6.
I didn't believe Sony when they said the PS3 will still have a place in the ecosystem when the PS4 comes out but I do now.
