Gran Turismo 6 Set To Launch On PS3 This Holiday Season

Add another gigantic title to the 2013 holiday season.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced Gran Turismo 6 , the latest installment in the acclaimed, best-selling franchise. It will launch for the PlayStation 3 later this year.

As revealed by series creator Kazunori Yamauchi at the 15th anniversary GT event, GT6 "will bring new levels of authenticity to the Real Driving Simulator." We'll also receive new tracks, cars and a revised user interface, along with a fresh compact game engine that will improve operation and "increase the flexibility to expand it with downloadable content." The game will also be primed to expand its connectivity with other devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

All of the cars and tracks available in GT5 will be present in GT6. However, the new additions will bring the lineup of impressive cars to 1,200 at launch, with new cars ready to be added via DLC. Plus, racing enthusiasts will be able to expermient with "several thousand aerodynamic parts and custom wheels." All in all, GT6 will boast 33 locations with 71 different layouts, 19 of which are gonna be brand new. Lastly, there's are several new projects that will "blur the line between the virtual and real." One of those is the already-existing and extremely popular GT Academy.

Said Yamauchi:

"It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo. Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments. I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!"

No word yet on whether this might also arrive for the PS4. If Sony is planning to do that, they're likely holding that announcement for E3. Either way, though, GT6 is coming! Rejoice!

What were you expecting other than cars, tracks, and racing?

I was waiting for GT5 to drop, but when it did, i was very unimpressed. I actually hated the game. Then i got an xbox and got Forza 4 and eventually Forza Horizon. I dont think ill be going back to GT, but who knows I dont want to give up on the Franchise.

No offense, but Forza is for people who like racing but don't know anything about the reality or authenticity of it.

GT is for those who actually want to drive. Not just race in a video game.

I retired Forza after having played GT5. The difference in handling was simply too large to ignore.

And you are right Ben, atleast in my case. I know about the reality of racing, but cant consider myself an expert. To me,Forza strikes the balance between fun to play and challenging better than GT does. And that is the reason why i prefer it over GT. GT is just not for me anymore, but I can see why it is for other people.

I agree, man. Forza is a blast to play. GT5 you kind of have to kid yourself that the boring nature of the gameplay is because it's SO real.

KidPresentable: You can call it "boring" all you want. For people who crave absolute realism, GT is the only racer they play.

Sunni_Boi: That's part of the reason Forza is so popular. It does strike a great balance between realism and accessibility. I just don't like it when Forza fans (who can't even change their own oil in real life, let alone race) try to pretend that Forza is the better simulator. And I know you weren't trying to claim that. 🙂

Except it really isn't. I tried so many times to get into forza but it annoyed the hell out of me. The physics are off and the only redeeming factor of the game is the livery editor. That was actually fun to use but I wouldn't buy a game just to edit and not actually play it properly.

Well I've never played Forza so I can't comment on that but GT does an incredible job in being a game/driving simulator. The thing with this announcement is that this all seems more like DLC rather than a whole new game. Even though they are adding quite a bit of everything it just dos t get the wow factor and its more like oh ok cool. Now I know I'm going to be getting this on day one for the PS4 but like I said before its just not what I was expecting or wanting. But anyways that's just a personal opinion and I know I'm not the only one that feels like this.

A little underwhelming but it still has the "Gran Turismo" power to the release.

PROJECT CARS looks a lot better in my opinion.

I hope this sells well, probably will pick it up at some point.

However, Forza 4 did feel like a better "game" than GT5. Much more fluid and fun experience.

I never saw it coming until I heard that GT is celebrating it's 15th anniversary.

D1P for sure but I'm still playing GT5 😉

GT5 is amazing. Beat all my expecations. But this is is totally unnecessary. If it was a PS4 launch title it would make sense.

Props on keeping it quiet for so long. Not sure that was the right decision though.

Can't wait. I'm still hoping it will come out on the PS4, though I don't think it will so it's a bit disappointing.

Since its a ps3 game they should've announced it last year before they announced the ps4. It just seems odd to me. Especially since gt5 was announced years before it came out. Idk I liked gt5 but I kind of realize I like arcade racers more then sims. To each their own though.

eh.
GT5 was such a disappointment, on the phase of GTAIV and RE5 disappointment!
so ill be keeping my expectations low till the game proves me wrong.
hope they add allot more car love as well.
GTs always been far too much about the driving, and not enough about the love of cars.
id be nice to see a library mode, have tons of new and classic cars for people to walk around, sit in, start up, take for a test drive.
after all people DO race cars because they love cars, not just because they love to go round in circles really fast!
o, and make a ps4 version with soft body physics!

PD was really in a tough spot with GT5. Originally they wrestled with the idea of two versions – essentially premium and slowly adding cars and standard with hd gt4 models. But for the sake of Sony's marketing team, they needed 1000 cars and mashed the two games together wasting a lot of time on upscaling old models. They decided NOT to go the GT3 route, which was less cars but giving us enough to really enjoy it and set the stage for the next bigger installment – gt4.

So it's no surprise to me that GT6 will be on PS3 and probably only PS3. They spent so many resources on it's engine that to start from scratch on PS4 probably wasn't an option (especially with Drive Club in the works). Whether it's something the fans will react positively to is another question. While GT5 is definitely lacking a bit I still play it on a weekly basis – it's still a good game. I for one will definitely pick up 6, but I too am anticipating the day GT reinvents itself on PS4.
