Ben-DutkaHow are the three next-gen consoles faring in terms of sales? Well, at least for one retailer, better than you might think.
HMV has reported that the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii are all selling well despite the lack of software during the slower spring months. And perhaps surprisingly, the PS3 is said to be exceeding sales targets, and the retailer expects even better sales once Sony decides to drop the price (which hasn't been confirmed, but most analysts expect it to happen this year).
Tim Ellis, head of games for the entertainment retailer, made this comment to GamesIndustry.biz:
"Sales remain in line with expectations, occasionally even exceeding them," he said. "We're looking forward to further games releases, and when the time's right, a suitable price revision to take the console to its next level of sales."
The Wii remains one of the hottest items in the store, and HMV has said the normally hard-to-find console is arriving at a better clip. "Supply is stabilizing," Ellis said. The 360 also continues to sell well, even after having been on the market for over a year and a half. All in all, the three consoles are duking it out over at HMV, which is a good sign for both the industry and the Big 3.
"From a retail and customer perspective it's great to have three games heavyweights relatively matched and vying for market domination," finished Ellis. "This creative tension is leading to fantastic innovative technology and brilliant games."
