Will Ninja Theory Finally Get Some Love For Making A Great Game?

There will be much debate on this issue, mostly because people will argue about the proposed quality of Ninja Theory's past productions.

For the record, I wouldn't classify Heavenly Sword or Enslaved: Odyssey to the West as elite productions, and even the freshly released DmC: Devil May Cry doesn't necessarily classify, either. Games have to hit the 9+ range to be considered AAA productions in my eyes.

However, DmC was pretty darn close and in truth, had it not been for a slight dip in performance concerning the PS3 version and some less-than-impressive boss encounters, the game would've warranted some very high praise. Now, the developer has not been amply rewarded for their games in the past, as they've said the titles in question didn't live up to expectations (despite the 1.5 million copies Heavenly Sword evidently sold). So with the release of a very well-done reboot, might Ninja Theory finally get their just due? Will the popularity of the franchise in question assist?

The timing isn't that bad this time around; Enslaved ran into the standard fall gauntlet and, if I remember correctly, launched the same week as Castlevania: Lord of Shadows . But January isn't too highly competitive and besides, people have been waiting on this reboot for quite some time. The critics have responded favorably and it feels almost inevitable that the game will sell well…but Ninja Theory just seems cursed when it comes to sales charts. So will DmC: Devil May Cry break that unfortunate trend…?

I thought the demo boss was pretty cool. Are the other bosses better or worse than that boss, Ben?

I don't know, I didn't play the demo. Which boss was in it?

Some are better, some are worse. They're all a bit unimaginative though.

It was the ugly moth boss in a lava room. Lots of verbal profanity was exchanged before the start of the fight.

The install reminds me of Devil may Cry 4…already feeling nostalgic. Pretty sure i'm in the minority because i like this Dante more for some reason. I'm glad they put in custom sound tracks, its a small thing but it makes a big difference

It will probably sell about 2 million copies. Apparently that's not enough for them but they should get paid since Capcom contracted them. I wonder if this means they will be handling any sequels or if it will get passed off to someone else because Ninja Theory has a reputation for being shiftless nomads.

I could get behind an NT developed sequel. Fix up a few minor quibbles and DmC is nigh on par with Dante's Awakening, IMO. I s**t you not.

Heavenly Sword 2 would grant them the rewards they seek.

I think people will forever hold grudges against them for doing reboots of already good series/games and dumping HS like a hot potato despite its good sells not being good enough

I've played all three of NT's game, and I just can't shake the feeling that they're not quite operating to their fullest potential. It's an immensely creative team, and they've got stellar production values but there's just something missing. That being said, they deserve every accolade they get. Even if they are just short of true greatness, I reckon they're leagues ahead of the competition.

oh yeah DMC is TOTALLY going to help NTs popularity!
seriously, have you even bothered to read fan reactions on this?
NT has always been a star in critics eyes, and the devil in consumers eyes.
if anything DMC is making that WORSE!

I like Ninja Thoery I really do, but this is still a project I cannot approve of. It is probably a very decent action game, I do not doubt that. But it is the principle of taking a series I like and changing it drastically. As you said in your review DMC felt like it didn't need a reboot – I was anticipating DMC5 with Dante/Trish and Lady – but no.

It is the character as well from what I have seen he just comes off as really annoying. If and if I conflict with a character too much in a game I simply can't enjoy it.

I may well check out the game when it drops half price but for now I think it is up against a lot of competition. Ni No Kuni is what I am after this month and shortly following is TOMB RAIDER, Dead Space 3, and Bioshock: Infinite – it's a very busy start to the year.

They have gotten love from critics in the past but can't seem to sell games. No way DMC is going to change that trend considering fan reaction to the game.

Sorry, good reviews aren't enough in today's highly competitive market. NT made a huge mistake alienating long time DMC fans early on with their radical changes to such an iconic character.

98% of the time, good reviews are indeed enough. It's why EA says at every possible turn that they strive to produce games that fall into the 9+ range, because they invariably sell much better.

Blame Capcom, they wanted massive changes and kept pushing NT to make them.

While I would very much like for NT to get the recognition that's been overdue, I don't think DMC will help.

Reviews hasn't been a problem. Critics appreciated what they put out, but it's the gamers who doesn't seem to care.

They're in even a worse position now as they've taken a franchise that is loved by a lot of people, changed it drastically (I'm not ashamed to admit that the change in Dante's character still offends me), and in the form of a reboot that nobody thinks it needs.

While this isn't their fault (it is Capcom who wanted the reboot, and everything NT put out had to be approved by Capcom first, let's remember…), it's going to be difficult to convince the initial fans.

Yeah, people new to the franchise will see this as an awesome game, and go buy it….but what about everybody else?

While I can see the quality, it's inevitable not to compare it to past entries….and then the hesitation kicks in 🙁

If its good I hope it sells well. But it was really lame for the director of the game to originally try and make dante look like himself. Like he wanted to be in the game so bad, I remember interviews with him and his reason for the character redesign were dodgy.

I personally didn't care, but sooooooo many people did. I think the fact that dante looks so different might actually cost them a chunk of sales for some people despite good reviews.

I will wait for it on the PC…60FPS is the way to play DmC.

THAT, he should've kept to himself. LOL

I sure hope the game gets the attention it deserves. I haven't played it except for the demo, so that hope could go either way.

I truly hope so as I have enjoyed all their games. They definitely deserve a pay day or hit. Enslaved was an amazing game that was missed by many.

As far as DMC goes I played a little bit of DMC4 and thought it was fun. Maybe one day I will pick up the HD collection cheap and give it a go or just start from DMC.

Not I hate how much of a crybaby's they were with Heavenly Sword sales, also Heavenly Sword and Enslaved are games as good like DMC, so they didn't do something so outstanding with this game in order to make me love them.
