A lot of people wanted more freedom and openness in Dragon Age II . And let's face it, "freedom and openness" is the core mantra of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim .
So maybe if BioWare is seeking to make Dragon Age III: Inquisition more like Bethesda's epic role-playing franchise, it means they're simultaneously listening to fan feedback and taking cues from hugely successful competition.
According to Kotaku citing a recent Game Informer interview with BioWare Edmonton and Montreal general manager Aaryn Flynn, the new Dragon Age has indeed been influenced by Skyrim :
"You can't look at a game like Skyrim and not think about how impressive what they've accomplished is or [think] that's an interesting new direction or that there was something that didn't work well for them that we could take in a new direction. So, we're always influenced by these games, especially in a relatively tight-knit genre like RPGs."
There's a possibility that Dragon Age III is now a next-gen project , which means BioWare will have all sorts of power with which to craft their more open-ended universe. Still, I'd rather not see a Skyrim clone; let's try and keep some individuality, shall we?

I fail to see the 'New Direction' Skyrim took, it looked just like Oblivion to me – just with Dragons. I guess it is just the very traditional fantasy setting of these games which don't appeal to me.
I agree with you. Skyrim was a refined Oblivion in terms of the world you lived in.
I think "new direction" refers to DA3 copying ESV, not ESV being different from ESIV.
While I was greatly disappointed by DA2, I actually think that this is a bad idea. For Bioware to try and make DA like Elder Scrolls is just a bad idea.
For one, I like the fact that the DA games had a similar style of gameplay as kotr, not many games available with this play style and I'd be perfectly happy with them keeping it that way.
My biggest worry with them trying to clone skyrim is that Bethesda has been making huge open world games for years and with each new game they seem to make the world bigger and better than before.
If Bioware tries to jump from the harshly limited DA2 to something like Skyrim, I see it going horribly wrong. Even if it turns out ok, why play a decent Elder Scrolls clone, when you can just play Elder Scrolls?
Play to your strengths Bioware, don't become the next Squeenix trying to be something you're not.
If I can get Dragon Age in an expansive Open-World I'm all in. Didn't play Dragon Age 2 because of a lot of limitations. So I'm looking forward to getting back into a new game, as I ha a lot of fun with DA:O.
If that means more interesting places to explore, stuff to loot, and things to do with my loot then I'm all in.
I swear Bioware is losing direction with Dragon Age! They should try making it more like DA Origins
I can *promise* you all that BioWare will not go all open world on us like Skyrim. It's just not how they do things, never has been.
But to open their games a *bit* more, add a bit more exploration to the mix, now that will only do good imo.

I fully believe DAIII will be an perfect blend of DAI and Skyrim.
Beam you're right about that, there's just no way in hell Bioware would toss out the basic structure and make an open world RPG. But making it bigger and not a tiny menu system that lets you navigate a tiny city, THAT's worth taking note of.

They've already announced that as something they want to do, so chin up.

That would be cool for sure. I didn't like the traveling in Dragon Age Origins. I felt it was a way they cut corners. Don't get me wrong I truly loved DA:O! I just like having the option of traveling by foot or horse and seeing everything along the way. Elder Scrolls, Far Cry, Dead Island and GTA do this very well.
I didn't like it either. In fact it really slowed the pace of the game, and broke the quest up too much and there is potentially a lot to be explored there. They provided a big map but only 25% of it was seen.
I really enjoyed the game but that was one of my only complaints.
I don't think that they'll be silly enough to completely ape the Elder Scrolls, especially considering that they've already mentioned that they'll be retaining the party system, but if they have a series of wide open dungeon-styled maps springing from a massive main hub area, that could be quite cool. Just depends on how they go about it, I guess.
I never played a Dragon Age game before, mostly because I haven't traditionally cared much for fantasy settings. But then I got REALLY in to Skyrim, and considering how much I adore the Mass Effect games I am thinking about checking out a DA game. Is that a good idea? And what's the combat like? If there's one thing that got on my nerves in Skyrim, it was the combat…
I think its a good idea, I would get Origins especially because of how cheap you can find it and if you get the ultimate edition it will come with all the DLC.
The battling really depends on the difficulty level you choose. On the lower levels you can pretty much play it like an action RPG, however on Hard and Nightmare you will need to play it like a tactical turn based RPG. What I mean is you can pause the battle and dictate what your characters do be it movement, attacking, casting spells and whatnot and on the harder difficulties this becomes a absolute must, where as on the lower difficulty levels you may never need to pause the battle even once.
Overall I would say give it a go, if you don't like it fine, but if you don't like it you really won't be losing much money anyway.

I like DAII simply because it gives me the illusion of an action RPG (I`m a sucker when it comes to Action RPG) The only thing I hated about it was the recycled areas, what happened to the siblings (No matter what you do "it" will always happens!)and the main character`s voice (it changes with your choices; aggressive, humor, neutral) DAI is, in a sense, offers freedom but it the form of character progression (where else can you be a sword&shield wielding fireball spewing badass?)
I loved Origins and other then the lack of armor for your team I really like the second one as well. I really don't understand a lot of the gripes about it(DAII). I do hope the third one is more like Origins then anything else. I thought the traveling in Origins was awesome, it was a clone of FF Tactics traveling system.
The only reason I would even want them to scrap there style and try a Skyrim style is I believe they could actually pull it off unlike Bethesda. So if they really want to have a go at it, then I hate to say it, but you have my blessing. However I would rather use retain the DA formula and make a new IP to challenge Bethesda.
As long as there is still a party with you in Dragon Age 3 i'll be happy.
