Criterion Not Done With Burnout, But May Opt To Branch Out

Criterion has made a name for itself as being a fantastic studio for racing games.

The Burnout series may top the list for some, but don't forget that Criterion also made Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and will be responsible for the upcoming Need for Speed: Most Wanted , which is slated to launch on October 30. So what are their plans for the future? More high-octane crowd-pleasing racers?

Well, yes and no. In a recent interview with The Guardian , Criterion creative director Craig Sullivan first said "there's still a lot of stuff we want to do with driving." He added that they will certainly produce another Burnout game, and they'd like to continue to push the boundaries of the genre. But here's perhaps the most interesting quote:

"We might make a Road Rash game…but then we might make a game without vehicles in it. I mean, we made Black, I was the lead designer; we might make a game about blowing the crap out of each other. But Road Rash seems like a good fit for Criterion…"

Dude, Road Rash ! They could make a totally kick-ass game, I think. As for branching out and trying other things, we should probably encourage that for the sake of freshness and creativity. But then again, those racing fans will always want the goodness for which Criterion has become known…

I hope they do another driving game even though it would be interesting to see what they could do in another genre. I am just excited for Most Wanted PS3!! I have it preordered on the PSN and I cannot wait to play it!

I really didn't like in the full interview that they're saying that playing with friends and socification is the future of gaming. It's a common mentality, but not one that I endorse. On the other hand, racers aren't really good for stories, so they have to find another way to be compelling.

I do hope they go back and do another full fledged Burnout game. Provided it has enough content, it'd be awesome to see just one entry per generation. It would allow huge changes from one game to the next. And Road Rash. I have vague recollections of playing that at a friend's place when I was a midget. I'd be up for something along those lines. But anything that Criterion does, I'm game for.

Road Rash!!! Man, that takes me back. I'm not sure how well it would translate, but if anyone can bring back Road Rash and make it awesome, it's Criterion. I'd love to see them work on a new full fledged Road Rash game.

I know! I can't believe it took 5 comments on this article before someone was pumped about Road Rash! That game was awesome, tons of great memories. They've GOT to allow for local co-op though.

Yes! Although, I think most games that have a multi-player mechanic should have local co-op. Then again, maybe I'm just a relic in this age of video games and online play…

It would be nice if they did a NFS Underground 3 instead of another Most Wanted game. This would be the 2nd NFS Most Wanted game to be released..

ok so you want them dto do a #RD underground instead of a @ND most wanted? you mak eit sounds like most wanted has been getting loads of sequels while Underground was forgotten or something.

No way. Criterion needs to stay away from the Underground Series. You should have an idea why with the way they're handling Most Wanted. Also, it wouldn't be an Underground 3, because they don't make sequels. It would simply be NFS Underground, and their own take on the series. I can already see it, exotic cars at night doing takedowns to each other…. emmm no thanks! Most Wanted already covers that, and they certainly haven't shown any faith in real car customizations.

You both have a good point i guess i should have been more clear. I miss the underground series more mainly due to the customisation you could do to the exterior of the cars with the body kits, paint jobs and vinyls. The newer ones are more presets of body kits and not as many options

yes, we need another BLACK game!!!!!!!
but hey that hatchet is buried, in fact ill give them every cent in my bank account if they do another black game!
but they MUST do another burnout game, burnout paradise was far too freaking awesome to end the series there!
it shocks and amazes me how few open world arcade games we have these days!
ps2 was littered with them, but this gen there sadly so rare.
its so much fun racing around streets flying over buildings and into billboards.

i hope they license the new soft body physics tech recently shown off, burnout really could benefit from its crash structures!
one thing that really worries me about next gen, were starting to see manufactures focus allot on GPU power and forsake the CPU.
i really hope that does not happen next gen, because the spots where we really need improvements, physics mainly, are CPU intensive.
it would be a MASSIVE mistake to put out next gen systems with underpowered CPUs.
i really hope $ony and M$ understand that, in fact if your going to cut costs the CPU should be the last place you do it!
