The Uncharted franchise had its day in the sun when it was presented at the legendary Louvre museum. Now another franchise gets a turn at impressing all the art lovers.
And it may not be what you expect… Namco Bandai Games America Inc. has announced that the critically acclaimed kooky franchise, Katamari Damacy , will be on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City between July 29 and November 5. It's part of the museum's Century of the Child: Growing by Design exhibit.
If you don't know, Katmari debuted back in 2004 and instantly charmed critics and gamers alike with its unique style and gameplay. Basically, you rolled this sticky ball around (the katamari) and picked up everything small enough to fit; the bigger the katamari, the more you could "roll up." You'd start with tiny stuff like paper clips and thumbtacks and eventually build up to cars, buildings, and even mountains and islands. It got pretty nutty.
But not only was it innovative, it was also quite the visual display. Said Namco Bandai Vice President of Marketing Carlson Choi:
"NAMCO BANDAI Games’ KATAMARI DAMACY has touched countless people, from children to adults, and is truly a modern video game classic. The inclusion of KATAMARI DAMACY in this ground breaking exhibit is a testament to the creative designs embodied in NAMCO BANDAI’s games and shows the importance of video games in peoples’ lives in addition to being a validation of video games as a modern form of interactive art."
The Century of the Child: Growing by Design is the "first large-scale overview of the modernist preoccupation with children and childhood as a paradigm for progressive design thinking." If you're going to be in New York this summer, you should definitely stop in and check it out.
Great to see games being appreciated as something that is valid as an art from.
If anyone from the UK is interested, LittleBigPlanet from MediaMolecule is now featured in the 'British Design' section of the V&A Museum in London. It shares it's spot with icons such as The Beatles and the Mini. So yeah…quite impressive.
