Game Genie Returns For All Those Who Despise Following Rules

Duuuude…remember the Game Genie? Sure you do.

It was one of those cheating devices that let you do all kinds of unfair things in the gaming world. And it's coming back.

A user has shot us a link to Hyperkin , where you can check out the new Game Genie. It becomes available on July 17 and for only $29.99, you can mess with your game saves and get all Godlike.

Basically, you transfer game saves to your PC, edit them using pre-programmed edits from a database, and then just return the save files to your PS3. Voila! As for games that you can tinker with, many of the biggest titles available are on the chopping block: "Popular games that will have modifications at release are Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham City, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim." However, it's important to note that, as mentioned at Joystiq , there will be no cheating in multiplayer modes.

But there don't appear to be any restrictions on the single-player altering. So have yourself a blast!

I still have mine for the NES and Genesis.

But what about trophies? Can you modify your game file to get trophies easier?

I doubt it.

You might be able to say, give yourself an item in skyrim that makes it easier to get a trophy but I doubt you could do something like set some kill count with a gun higher to get a trophy

I doubt that too. Would just make everything easier, i can just see friends talking to other friends and saying "dude u got buy this game genie, it will get trophies easier."

Since you edit the savefiles, you will not be able to receive trophies at all further with that save. Exporting a save for a game that supports trophies and then importing it, disables trophies. All downloaded saves or imported saves disables trophies.
Unless, of course, if game genie has found a way around this. And if that is a fact, then we are all doomed. That would just be horrific, because then the meaning of achieving a trophy in the first place would be ruined.

Hahaha, man it's been a while since I've seen anyting about game genie, I've still got mine for the NES, hell I remember when I was a kid I had 2 NES, because 1 didnt work with the genie, hahaha what a nastalgia kick.

I dont think I'll be buying this however, games have evolved, we no longer need to cheat to beat a game because we have no way to save, or because some games were so INSANELY hard on the NES. Still, I hope this does well and we see more.

Right off the top of my head, I have quite a few Game Genies in my gaming collections for various systems(I never used them though).

Plus I also have GameSharks cards & CD's(Dreamcast), Exploder game code cartridges(Playstation), and even a Game Champion code memory card, that was actually made just for the PS1's Tenchu:Stealth Assassins game.

I'm having flashbacks of the old old Game Genie commercials. Awesome news.

I wonder how it affects trophies?

There is one thing for sure, don't use it on FF7! My friends ruined his copy of FF7 and now there is a black spot while climbing up to the Shinra tower in Midgar that won't go away! Bye bye disc 1! I wonder if it'll happen again for the PSN version 😉

That's awesome, adding cheats that do crazy things always extends the life of a game.

The two best uses of Game Genie came from SNES Street Fighter 2 (World Warrior mainly, the first one) and Final Fantasy 3 (VI).

Street Fighter 2: Forget those glitchy boss codes that sold game genies in the first place. The REAL best code was the "all special moves can be done in the air" code, which turned the game into something completely different and awesome. Like a scaled down version of all those messed up Champion Edition machines at the time. You could do all sorts of crazy things with this code, like cancelling special moves into special moves, climbing the screen indefinitely, and even block in mid-air. This code alone extended the life of WW for another year.

Final Fantasy 3: You could edit characters default movelists and initial equipment. The most hilarious thing I did was give Sabin's "Blitz" to Shadow, renamed Shadow "Hanzo", and then did nothing but piledrivers on all enemies (that it worked on). You could also put in codes to give you 871207123098 random items at the end of every battle. Nothing like having a near maxed out inventory 3 hours into the game. So. Much. Fun.

Yeah, while I wouldn't bother with anything fighting game-related now, if this new Game Genie can do similar thing for RPGs, I'll be gold.

These things are great for messing around with things after you've contented yourself with regular play. This could be a ton of fun.

I've been silent as of late considering I'm moving… (It's sad to see me entire colection in a box… and very heavy too considering it's composed of the past 3 generations of Playstation with some Nintendo stuff) but I can't be quiet on this. Why did the Genie have to come back!? It freaking tarnishes the quality of gamers same as the codebreaker and gameshark did. You break the rules of the game, you break the game… the darn thing better have trophies so I can spot you in a crowd if you use it. I worked hard to get trophies as they make my experiences feel more complete. I keep hearing from people on my friendlist talking about cheating to boost their PSN Statcard. C'mon, how do they think their product makes people who work hard for their accomplishments in a game feel? Hell, even for a game as ridonculous as Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (on it's harder difficulties of course…) I wouldn't cheat.

The only time I thought a cheat device was good, was when you could make pokemon you couldn't get on your version to appear if you had nobody to trade with…

Can I trade my brownie points in for a drink Ben? I could use one after hearing about this.

bit late dude, theres been ps3 products that do this for years!
i love playing around with these things there so much fun!
its a shame developers have cut cheats out of their games, i remember the good old ps1 days where you could enter cheat codes and get things like infinite health, full ammo, give all weapons, walk through walls, be invisible, see through walls, things like that.
shame games these days dont have them any more, i mean imagine how much fun infamous 2 would be if you could not die and you had all the powers unlocked from the get go and you had infinite energy!
they actually had that activated when i got to play the preview code when the developers paid a visit.
dunno why developers always remove them once the game goes gold.
i mean yea it allows people to gain a unfair advantage, but why not do what R* did with GTAIV?
disable trophies when cheats are activated, and restrict them to campaign only.
simple!
no reason you have to take them out all together!

I for one feel the trophy system is overrated.

I hope that it does inflate the trophies in a negative way that forces developers to work on a new incentive based model.
[such as]
Collect all Riddler trophies and receive
5% off credit on your next Batman DLC purchase.
or
Earn platinum in Gran Turismo 5 and receive a "special" car given to you from the developers.

I would much rather have something like I aforementioned than some device used to feed someones competitiveness and ego.

I grew up on Atari where you had get more points than the other person,
Why should it be the same way 30 years later?

I often joke when I'm playing shooters on steam that I am using a game genie. Only a small amount of people get the joke. Sadly now, people might try and ban me when I got on legitimate killing sprees >:)

Man Game Genie and me go back so long ago. I loved it on my NES..especially with Battletoads. Then I had the one for Sega and that was cool but I rarely had any games that I really needed it for..I don't even think this new one is needed now.

Wonder if GameShark will come back? I used that bad boy to max out my Smackdown character like no other lol

I read somewhere that Gameshark also plans a comeback.

BTW, some PS3 games still have cheats, but the penalty for using them usually is that using that cheat can also cut out a side mission (resulting in less playtime value IMO) .

Best earned brownie point ever!

This sounds pretty tempting. I Wander if it could get me a godmode like cheat for Twisted Metal, just like old times.

I'm betting that this won't affect trophies, and there'll be a controversy where trophy scores start to skyrocket and Sony will have to patch the PS3 firmware to recognize(and invalidate) altered game saves.

VampWolfer

That is already just how it is. I remember "transfarring" my saves from MGS:peace walker on the psp to the ps3's HD version. That save made me unable to receive trophies further. That's how it is. Have you never downloaded a save from the internet just for fun? The system will tell you that the save disable the trophies. Altering a savegame will do the same.

Unless, of course, if game genie has found a way around this. And if that is a fact, then we are all doomed. That would just be horrific, because then the meaning of achieving a trophy in the first place would be ruined.

To the best of my knowledge, PS3 currently only recognizes if the game save belongs to someone other than the account holder, and that's when it disables trophies. I wouldn't expect it to be able to recognize "altered" save games, as there is (currently) no widespread way to alter your game saves. It can be done(Borderlands is full of hacked weapons, shields, etc.), and in some cases has been made quite easy(just look up Borderlands "willow tree"). I haven't tried any myself(and don't intend to), so i can't say whether or not they disable trophy support, but i'd bet they don't.

(A quick google/Gamefaqs search suggests that willow tree indeed does not disable trophies)

oh man.. *collects brownie points* I had one for my nes, snes, and game shark for the PS1 and PS2. i can still remember one of the codes by heart for the original f-zero on the snes. This brings back so many memories. Dunno if its worth using now. But extra cash in games would be helpful but meh.. Games are fun as they are now a days. A tweak here or there could certainly bring life into some games that may have faded or died out.
