Well, it probably gets boring working within the same genre, right? And if you're successful, doesn't that earn you the right to branch out?
It appears that the fighting veterans at NetherRealm Studios might want to do just that. In a recent Q&A at the PlayStation Blog , NetherRealm boss and co-creator of Mortal Kombat Ed Boon says the team's next game could be something very different. However, their current project – Injustice: Gods Among Us – needs to do well so they can get that opportunity. Said Boon:
"We feel like [Injustice: Gods Among Us] is kind of our first step towards that. If it does well, we would like to see our next step be a non-fighting game, maybe something unique in its own right. This is our first step in that direction."
He added that he also wants to work on other new IPs in various genres, and even for different formats as well. As of right now, they're beefing up the staff so they'll be ready for the next generation of hardware. Once again, though, we're faced with a common question: Should a developer who has proven itself so capable in one genre just stick to that genre? Is it simply too risky to try something different? Or should they try to expand creatively? Safety versus risk…
