Rockstar Explains Lengthy Dev Cycles, No Beta For GTAV

It takes a long time to produce the kind of quality everyone expects. That's the short version of Rockstar's explanation.

Many have wondered why we haven't heard anything more about Grand Theft Auto V , which was first unveiled late last year. Fans might be getting a little antsy, as Rockstar's recent production, Max Payne 3 , was an example of another extraordinarily long development cycle. The previous installment launched in 2005; for the record, GTAV hit in April 2008.

So despite the fact that Rockstar almost always delivers an epic experience, they have felt the need to apologize over at their official website :

"We are sorry that it sometimes seems to take a long time, but the massive amount of work it takes to imagine, design, build, and populate a digital world is simply staggering, and we are constantly striving to make sure each game surpasses the last one. We try to work as fast as possible, but given the combinations of cutting edge technology, high resolution graphics and animation, and hundreds of thousands of sound files, all of which have to work perfectly, and be fun and enjoyable to play, it is not surprising the games take a while to make."

Oh, we understand. And we'll be ready for GTAV whenever it launches, because we're 99.7% certain it will rock our world. As for the big game in question, Rockstar did confirm that there will be no beta test, so no getting in early. The developer finished by stating:

"We feel it is our duty to make sure the games are as good as we can make them and as innovative as we can make them."

They did give us a couple more GTAV screenshots as a consolation prize, if you're interested. But does all this mean that GTAV has basically zero shot of coming out this year…?

I don't think Rockstar have to apologize at all, they have released some great titles this generation, possibly the best company this gen even. Besides, we only just got Max Payne 3! I am not expecting a release until 2013 summer, but I guess it would be nice to know what the game is about and who I will be.

I never thought it would hit this year, it just didn't fit the facts.

It's a good statement that I'm sure will be appreciated by impatient fans. R* quality must take an incredible nose to the grindstone dedication. If they can get a real hand to hand combat system in there I might get interested in GTA again.

Had some wicked Max Payne 3 dreams last night complete with bullet-cam.

R doesnt need to be like everyone else and put out a game every 1 or 2 years. Theres always so much to do in every GTA. Max Payne 3 imo was the best 3rd person shooter Ive played.

If you follow the link in the article there's seriously somebody in there saying R* should be putting out new games every few months.

edit: IN the questions not the comments.

Thats crazy! What do they want to GTA to forever have expansion packs.

I prefer companies that take their time to make their games good, polished and feature packed, than those who pump a sequel every single year with barely anything new compared to the year before.

And usually, by the time a new game like GTA comes out, it's usually been years since the last iteration came out, so people are demanding that kind of gameplay again.

Now… If Blizzard could fix the mess D3 is right now… ¬_¬

as usual there totally missing the point!
people are not complaining that the games take so long to make!
there complaining that R* always announces their games than stays mum for months, if not years!
gets a little frustrating!
its been 8 months since GTAV was announced, the least they can do is give us some info on the characters, weapons, cars, whatever ANYTHING!!!!!

im not saying show off the whole game, but at least give us something!
maybe do a QA or something, ask your fans to send in questions and answer some of them.
like who will be returning for the game, will you be able to upgrade your weapons and vehicles like san andreas, will you be able to fly planes, fighter jets, private jets, choppers, will there be expansion packs like IV had, what weapons will be in the game, will the gang wars from san andreas be back, what type of theme is going to be in the game will it be a tropical game like vice city, or a more mafia styled game like 3, or a gang styled game like san andreas, will the mission choices be back from IV and this time will they have a bigger impact on the game maybe varying endings for instance?
surely they can say SOMETHING about the game!
