Sega has been doing some reevaluating recently and they've decided to shift their focus a little.
Today, Sega Europe has confirmed that as a result of the recent company restructuring, they've decided to pin their hopes on "developing new and existing digital content as well as driving key IP for packaged goods." In turn, Sega will be closing offices in France, Germany, Spain, Australia, and Benelux.
Said Sega Europe COO Jurgen Post:
"SEGA is entering a new and exciting phase that will position the company as a content led organisation maximising sales with strong and balanced IP such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, Football Manager and the Aliens franchise. The company will benefit from a clear focus and realigned strategy for our digital business and packaged goods and we are confident that this will lead to a successful future."
Well, we certainly hope so. Sonic has seen a bit of a rejuvenation in the digital world, but Sega's packaged goods have sort of been floundering this generation. Sales are tough to come by in this highly competitive market, so a "realignment" was probably a good idea. Besides, Sega can't go away completely. That just wouldn't be right.

And to kick things off we're going to fire a bunch of people and GTFO!
lol
Everyone can go away completely (and I actually worry about Ninty's future path and where it's taking them, but that's another story), but hopefully Sega have the IP to keep them going. Total War is still very popular, and Sonic goes well, and they've got the Olympics games (once every four years, but they'll hopefully be a reasonable boost for 'em), Yakuza, Aliens and all their classics (Virtua you-name-it). And they've deffo got an eye for quality games (Vanquish was very good), but don't seem to have struck gold with new IP recently.
Guess this means no Binary Domain 2. Such a shame. I'm glad they got Virtua Fighter 5 FS out though, as they were debating it for a while.
Just translate all the Yakuza games to english and i'll be happy.
What do you mean by translate? If you just mean the menus and what not then absolutely, but if you want say English voices then He** No…I love them with the Japanese voices and the English subtitles and can't imagine them any other way. I cringe thinking of English speaking voices in the game as I know they would put the worst possible people on it.
I guess i was the only one hoping for a new console. Oh well, I guess a new Sonic game will have to do instead :/
always said sega should of stayed in the hardware market!
they dont have enough fingers in enough pies to make a shelling making games.
not to mention what little they do make is mediocre at best!
sad to see what was once one of the industries biggest companies fall so far!
