Downloadable games may not have the budget and may not aspire to vast, epic greatness.
Nevertheless, the majority of PSXE readers believe digital titles have every right to be considered among the year's best. In our recent poll, most said a fantastic experience like Journey deserved to be ranked among the elite; they'd have no problem with Thatgamecompany's subtle masterpiece winning this industry's most prestigious honor: Game of the Year. We don't have any problem with it, either. It just might happen, too, unless Assassin's Creed III or other titles impress the hell out of us.
This week, it's once again time to select the best User Review for our So You Think You Can Review Video Games user review contest. We didn't get as many submissions this time around (not a heck of a lot of games being released this time of year), so that's why there are fewer to choose from. But for the record, no matter how many we get in the future, I'm only going to select five (at most ) rather than ten for the final community poll. There are two reasons for this:
Firstly, I think it's too much to ask the community to read ten reviews to make a decision. I mean, people have lives and we should probably acknowledge that. Secondly, we want everyone to get better at writing these reviews and the longer the contest goes, the higher the quality should be. Hence, the competition should get stiffer. Gotta impress!
Also, don't forget, follow the links to see all available prizes. I'm throwing in Spec Ops: The Line as well but…uh…I wouldn't recommend it.
The 2 games I would say had a chance to be GoTY contenders was Dungeon Defenders and Pixel Junk Monsters(both older games). I personally wouldn't vote for Journey simply because it is not long enough to me, I have heard it is only 3 hours if you take your time(correct me if I'm wrong). As far as it getting multiple other awards I would have no issue with that.
That's about right, only took me 2 but hot damn it was a once in a lifetime emotional rollercoaster experience.
Yeah I still plan on picking it up once I am working or just waiting for the 3 game collection to hit disc before I get it. I have yet to hear anything bad about it other then it is short, which really isn't a issue so long as the price is right.
I just personally won't call a game that is under 10 hours a GoTY contender, not enough substance to be one in my opinion.
It's not about how long a game is for it to be GOTY, but the Journey it takes you on.
Rogueagent01, you have to try that game… I had my doubts, because it was very short… but once you play it, it blows your mind! you dont mind the time at all
I can't wait for your Spec-Ops The Line review. When's the embargo lifted on it? I played the demo and rather liked it. It'd be a shame if the game's a complete flop.
Embargo's up Tuesday, I think.
It would be amazing if Journey got a bunch of GOTY awards, and it would piss off so many people if Spike gave it the honor. That would be fun to see.
ACIII will probably take it if there are enough substantial updates from the last two expansions.
Things aren't looking good for Spec Ops, TWO insinuations that it sucks lol.
What's the story with Spec Ops, why so much talk about it? Is it a very special franchise that I've somehow missed earlier? Cause I don't think I know much about it, isn't it just another military themed shooter?
It was never great, but it could be considered a solid military squad-based franchise.
Oh man I've not even played three of the titles reviewed in this round, how can I possibly judge them…
What would be a cool concept for a future, similar contest would be if the same game were reviewed by all in each round. That would at least make it a lot easier to compare the submissions.
That's a good idea actually. Might lead to some reviews being pretty similar, but would make it more 'fair', I would think.
I've already thought of that, but we need to hit a big game release. Haven't really had any since this contest started, besides Max Payne 3. 🙂
It didn't have to be a new release? As long as it was a title that most had.
Yeah, I think scaling down selected reviews to 5 is best. I mean, I could quite happily read them all (I have no life you see), but I imagine most wouldn't be.
…come to think of it, the probable reason I won the one before last was because I was near the top of the poll – meaning people would see Uncharted 2 and vote for it, without considering the others. Actually makes me feel kind of depressed.
Oh well…no complaints 😛
Anyway, gunna go read the the 4 reviews like a no-lifer… 😛

whether it deserves the title or not is really irrelevant.
simple problem is there should always be retail games that are better, if a PSN game is better than all the retail games released that year it just goes to show the tripe that was released that year!
its like sitting back and saying the best car of the year was not from reliable manufactures, the ones who are known for making good solid fun to drive reliable cars.
no it comes from Renault, the exact opposite, the company which is known for making the most unreliable cars possible!
thats why PSN games cant ever be GOTY because surely you would like to think among we do get allot of crap released at retail, there, surely would be one, at least one gem!
really disappointed to hear the not so enthusiastic news on spec ops the line.
even the manager at my local EB today told me it sucks, i mean come on what the hell!?
demo was so freaking awesome, there were so many previews of it not so long ago spewing praise for it!
sigh.
looks like another game has promised the world, and yet again delivered on zilch!
maybe after this developers will get the hint, and stop hyping up their games as the second coming!
then they wonder why people are always disappointed………..
$ony X prime example!
for weeks they have been hyping a new reveal which will change the industry!
ZOMFG its so amazing, it will turn planets into gold its so awesome!
than they finally reveal it and it ends up being google TV.
sigh.
🙁
yup, that surely was totally deserving of all the hype!
NOT!
