Syndicate was a pretty good game, especially from a cooperative standpoint, but unfortunately, EA says it "didn't pay off."
Reboots have been big this generation, and EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau believes "numerous brands" are primed for a comeback. In speaking to CVG , Gibeau said one example of a successful reboot was the high-flying SSX , which met with considerable critical acclaim. But Starbreeze's production…well…
"Syndicate was something that we took a risk on. It didn't pay off – it didn't work.
But in general it doesn't change my appetite for wanting to go look in the library and see what we have and maybe bring back some IPs for the next-generation. That's the nature of the business; some stuff works, some stuff doesn't."
There certainly are multiple older titles that deserve a new look in a new generation, don't you think? And as Gibeau said, some will work and some won't; that's just the nature of the business. Personally, I don't see this as "rehashing" anything as most times, the new efforts are just completely and entirely different than the original title(s). Such is the way of rapidly advancing technology.

SSX was something that was missing this Gen. A fun arcadey Snowboarder. Plus the name SSX was one that many gamers new and old had fond memories of from back in the day.
Syndicate's name wasn't enough to bring interest in. To most, it just looked like another Generic FPS.
Big surprise, SSX was a new game in the same style and genre as the previous games, while Syndicate was remade in a COMPLETELY different genre into an average FPS – Shocker that didn't 'work out'.
I've had SSX rented for a week, or so, now. But because of VF5 FS I just haven't given it my time. Last night I stayed up late fighting it out online. SOme great and highly entertaining matches.
Anyway, I like this new SSX. The controls seem hard to get a handle on for me. Probably not the game's fault. It's just a complicated system, which I like, but not when I'm in a hurry to get a quick fix and I forget even how to execute my Metallica logo Tricky move mid-air. How is that done now?
Syndicate was ok, sort of, but anybody who was a fan of the originals knew that this remake was going to flop. You can't just take a RTS franchise and drastically remake it into a FPS. Trying to capitalize on the current FPS gaming landslide that's going on right now was just a bad decision by whomever came up with it, and a slap to the face of all the original fans. You think they would've looked at the attempt that was made in the past to turn the RTS franchise Command & Conquer into a FPS as well, and that one also failed. Even worse then the Syndicate remake from what I remember.
As far as SSX, that one was really enjoyable and one that I've been waiting on. However I still didn't enjoy it as much as SSX Tricky. But at least they stuck to a formula that works for that franchise, and didn't try to turn it into a completely different genre all together. Unlike the previously mentioned game.
I had the same thought. I played the originals on PC back in the 90s and if they had done the remake in the same manner, I would have purchased it. As soon as I heard it was going to be a FPS, I lost all interest.
Maybe SSX succeeded because it was the similar to past titles and Syndicate failed due to changing genres? Did you consider that EA?

Yep exactly. If Syndicate would have been a modern remake in the same RTS style of the originals I would've been super excited, but as soon as I heard it was going to be just another FPS it was instantly removed from my wish-list. Take note EA.
The lack of local multiplayer really turned me off from purchasing SSX.
The message: the FPS market is saturated. That will be all.
Maybe because SSX stuck somewhat to its roots, while Syndicate tried to be something that it should never have been. The past is ALWAYS your friend.
Well to be honest, and only judging from the demo, but the coop play in Syndicate wasn't all that either.
My coop buddy and I gave it a spin, but it felt incredibly generic, nothing out of the ordinary at all. Could have been found as a tacked on coop mode in most any shooter.
A shame, cause I had high hopes for that game. It *looked* slick in the trailers.
wow, this guys almost as good as stating the obvious as pachter!
seriously though, its quite obvious why syndicate did not work!
it flopped because it was a pretty mediocre game!
were not exactly in drought for TPS games so to do really well you really need to bring the best of the best!
syndicate had some really cool concepts, but they were not executed properly.
id love to see starbreze go back to it and bake it a little longer, i really believe it has the potential to be a really awesome game!
SSX did really well for the exact same reason.
it was a really good game!
reboots should always go well IF the game is actually any good!
syndicate would of sold like hotcakes if it was half as good a game as SSX was!
