If you're thinking Grand Theft Auto V would make for a nice holiday gift (for you, of course), you might have to…well, rethink your purchase strategy.
Rockstar has officially announced the next GTA installment but they haven't given us a specific release date, or even an estimated launch window. Various rumors and pieces of evidence have suggested we might see it later this summer or fall but now, the Sterne Agee analyst group says the title probably won't arrive until "early 2013." Previously, the firm said they believed GTAV would launch in the third quarter, just before Christmas.
That makes the race for Game of the Year all the more interesting, doesn't it? It also means the new Call of Duty should easily top the software sales charts for another year. But GTAV will be huge whenever it drops: According to Gamasutra , analyst Arvind Bhatia said the game could potentially sell around 25 million units during its first year of availability. And of course, if it launches early next year, it wouldn't face the stiff holiday competition (it's always stiff).
Well, whatever. Just get it here, Rockstar.
