tri-Ace Helped With FFXIII-2 Gameplay

Hmm…it'll be interesting to see if this little piece of information alters an RPG fan's viewpoint of Final Fantasy XIII-2 .

According to Gematsu citing a Tweet from Yuichiro Kitao, lead programmer of Resonance of Fate and battle programmer for Valkyrie Profile 2 , developer tri-Ace assisted in the development of Square Enix's new sequel.

Evidently, the team responsible for the Star Ocean franchise "helped in the gameplay, art, and programming fields." tri-Ace is listed under third-party contractors in the credits of FFXIII-2, so that's proof enough right there. The question is whether or not this is significant…it says they helped with the gameplay aspects, which isn't exactly surprising, as tri-Ace's combat mechanics have been similar to what we saw in FFXIII.

Star Ocean utilized a very similar pseudo-turn-based system that involved characters moving in real-time, but at least you could pause combat in SO and issue commands to all characters, which made those adventures role-playing games. Well, anyway. What do you think?

You know Final Fantasy is dead when they need to bring in outside help to make the gameplay better.

yeah, my comment below kinda say that too. they're losing the things that makes final fantasy great.

tri-ace assisted in developing the gameplay yet it's still that bad, I wonder if it's their idea to bring a monster in the party instead of the eidolons. I wish i can develop Alexander in 13-2 instead of behemoths. hehe…

i wouldnt say that its bad flat out, especially since i havent played it. by itself its a great game. the problem is when they decide to call a game final fantasy, an established franshise among fans, thats not a final fantasy game.

i should have not said bad, what i really meant to say is it didn't improve very much, i've enjoyed 13 too, i just wish that i can edit the auto attack of my other 2 party members.

@Jawknee

I was thinking along those lines as well. SE almost seems to have forgotten how to make a RPG. This gen its all about twitch this and twitch that. The sad thing is even with Tri Ace the game will probably not sell a million.

I should have put "better" in quotations. Certianly doesn't look "better" even with the outside help.

@jawk

its possible that it is better. just not a better final fantasy or even worthy of the name. gameplay seems more fluid and faster paced, something that shouldnt be in a final fantasy game. its all about micromanagement and slower paced that allows well thought out strategies. i hope this game has actual magic spells instead of a ball of fire with only its color changing to show what spell it is.

i see it as square enix not knowing what final fantasy should be. if youre making final fantasy, make final fantasy. star ocean is great because its been the star ocean i loved playing.

I only want to kill those monsters not to train them, cid raines and a tonberry could be a better party member. Can i use eidolons as a party member in 13-2? Just wondering..

I've played Star Ocean: The Last Hope International. NO WAY, is it similar AT ALL, to the FF13. Not in any, possible way.

For if it was at least a hint of Star Ocean's combat gameplay – I would've enjoyed it.

Not sorry.

@luda

I would agree with that. It is not similar to FF13 at all.

Anyways FF13-2 has 2 PERFECT review scores. One from Famitsu which this site tried to downplay by saying Famitsu tends to give out great scores to anything labeled FF or Zelda but when you look it up this is only the second FF game to get a PERFECT score. The very nature of Famitsu's review format makes it a tough publication to get perfect scores from since 4 individual reviewers take a crack at the game. I always liked the idea of that format, and I wish we had something similar to it here.

Let's face it…the gaming mags available here in NA just are not that good anymore. I used to love the UNOFFICIAL PS Mag and EGM. Those mags are history now. I still have my tomato splattered PS3 cover edition of EGM. Jack Trenton gave us his I'll give you $1200 if you can find a PS3 on store shelves when that is exactly where they were sitting during that awful first year. Hell, I still don't think Sony has fully recovered here in NA if you go by PS3 sales. It still seems to love that last place spot here in NA which I totally do not understand since the PS1 and PS2 were so popular here. Something's changed and it is something Sony must work on. The PS3 is very under appreciated here in NA for reasons I do not fully understand. I partially blame a lot of multiplat developers who have under performed this gen when it comes to the PS3.

Gamers are a fickle bunch plus they aren't stupid. They know most multiplats run better on the 360. Sony defence force members would say 99% are of multiplats are just fine now blah blah. Tell that to the people who bought Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, or even COD for the PS3. They got screwed for the most part becuase of lazy and incompetent developers.

Back to FF13-2. Dengike gave it a perfect score as well which is encouraging. I know the killtubes are history now plus you can swap out characters during batlle. There is also Golden Saucer 2.0 in the game. FF7 players should know exactly what that is. I will buy FF 13-2 day1. I'm not going to whine and carry on about Square's past like a certain somebody seems to love to do. Times have changed. Good for them that they got Tri-Aces help becuase Japanese developers need all the help they can get since their game production is an issue this gen. It's not uncommon for western developers to help each other out so I'm okay with this. Again Day 1 purchase that I will judge on its own merits…I'm not going to judge it against Square's past.

I've got two responses.

First one – seriously? Square can't handle this themselves? Huge budget, tons of minds, and they need Tri-Ace to help with the combat?

Second – Awesome. Tri-Ace games have always had better combat than Square's usual command-based RPGs. Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2, for example, were a lot more complex and challenging than any Final Fantasy. I know FFXIII-2 won't reach those heights, but anything with the Tri-Ace name will probably be good. I just wonder – did they actually get any control over it, or just help out the programmers?

That is what I am wondering. If Tri-Ace actually had any control then I know I will like the game as I have liked every title I have bought from them. The strategy elements that Tri-Ace uses are exceptional. There games usually start out simple enough, but by the end you are utilizing every possible item, spell, battle tactic in the book making all there games great to me. I never felt the need to use everything in my arsenal in any FF other than FFVIII. Ultimecia's castle had me using everything I could too survive it, probably because I refused to use the internet for help.

I know this is a bit old but has someone said something about that picture? Its not Star Ocean that's The Last Remnant. I know sadly enough because i played it. (horrible screen tearing)
