Sega Admits They Need To “Reinvent” Sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog for the PS3 and Xbox 360 was just plain bad, but Sega president Simon Jeffery told Newsweek he understands they need to "reinvent" Sonic. The recently released – and definitely improved – Sonic title, Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii represents a step in that direction, in fact.

"We are actually undergoing a fairly considerable refresh of Sonic as an intellectual property, as a character," said Jeffery.

Of course, this could take some time, so don't expect to see another Sonic title for a little while. And based on the last five years or so, it seems like a darn good idea. Give them some time, and perhaps Sega can "reinvent" Sonic and bring him back to the way he once was: good .

"We're not going to be bringing another game out on the other platforms for quite some time, because we feel that it is time to reinvent Sonic, to make Sonic contemporary again," Jeffery continued. "At the same time, even the recent 360 and Playstation 3 games have sold extremely well. Sonic is still an extremely endearing character; there's still a lot of love for Sonic out there in consumerland."

Yeah, the blue hero is teaming up with Mario for the Olympic Games next year, but as for another Sonic game…we're just gonna have to wait for a bit. And that's fine by us. Get it right, and we'll all be very happy for the return of quality for one of gaming's most recognizable mascots.
