Rising Isn’t A True MGS Entry, It’s A “New Metal Gear”

Even though it isn't what the Metal Gear Solid fans wanted to see , it's not really accurate to say it's part of the MGS franchise.

"Metal Gear" remains in the title and the game has changed significantly since gamers first saw it several years back, and those remain sore spots for a few people. But some new information has come to light that may erase some of the backlash.

Kojima Productions has stepped up to address a few rumors and misconceptions , which is exactly what they needed to do: first, Metal Gear Rising is not a proper sequel in the MGS universe. According to Kojipro's official Twitter page-

"We've only said that the period setting is several years after MGS4. Metal Gear Rising is not part of the Metal Gear Solid series. At present, we can't say more than this."

Producer Yuji Korekado added a few more behind-the-scenes tidbits. Interestingly enough, the original project got to the point where the team "no longer knew what the core of the game should be." Then, Kojima said the game might not be completed, and although the staff insisted they could finish, the game wound up being canceled. They had, however, already worked on story and motion capture aspects.

Then some members of Platinum Games wandered over to the Kojima Productions studio, and they really wanted to take on the incomplete project. They changed the title because frankly, it's a brand new Metal Gear . Oh, and Hideki Kamiya will not be the game's director, so that's sort of a strike against the game; we love that guy.

So maybe this info will alleviate some of the pain the hardcore MGS fans are feeling. This isn't for you, and you don't have to think it's part of the "Solid" universe…'cuz it ain't.

i cant say i am excited for this. it looks like a metal gear for twitch gamers. i will wait to see what it turns out to be before passing judgement but i just dont like how it looks.

Good call on taking out 'Solid' from the title; always thought that would be more fitting.

However they should of had a brand new cast. I reckon.

Agreed.

Also, if that's the case, why not drop the "Metal Gear" from the name completely.

Because with the name Metal Gear left in, it raises awareness for the game, as well as sales (so they hope).

The game would have sold just as well if not better had they left it like it was at E3. I would have bought that one. This one seems like grasping at smoke.

I have no problem with what they're doing with the game. The only thing that just threw me off is that they said it's several years after MGS4 but last time we saw Raiden he was getting ready to be a family man..so iono..wait and see approach as usual..

It is part of the Metal Gear Universe, they a re continuing the story of Raiden one of the main characters from the whole series after MGS 4. I don't see how they can claim that it isn't. If it wasn't they would create a new story with a new character, which would still be pretty redundant. I say take the story and set it to the previous setting between MGS2 & 4 That actually gives it some perspose.

They've done it before. Metal Gear Ghost Babel for the GBC was set after the first Metal Gear, but the events where not part of the main canon.

What i think Kojima is saying in a roundabout way is that Rising is non-canon.

True, but if so you have to ask…. whats the point in making it at all… and of course Ghost Babel was overwritten by MGS2, There won't be another Metal Gear post MGS4 to really confrim Rising as non-canon… I just think its a bad idea through and through.

Well the thing about Ghost Babel was that it didn't need MGS2 to prove that it was non-canon, anyone who played the game when it came out would realise it was an alternate canon. For instance the events of MG2 Solid Snake weren't acknowledged, Snake and Mei leng meeting for the first time, and a alternate premise for the original Metal Gear.

But on top of all of that one of the creators said that Ghost babel was non-canon. If kojima or someone else involved in the project says that Rising is non-canon that's all that is needed.

Anyway i would've preferred they'd went with the original plan of setting Rising in between 2 & 4, but if its non-canon they can do what they want with it. Rising was always designed primarily for newcomers, setting it in a alternate time line won't require any previous knowledge of Raiden or MGS to understand.

Apart of MGS or not is not the issue. It's their decision to change the game so drastically. In some of Kojima's recent tweets he's all but admitted that they had to reduce the games visual quality in order to reach a higher frame rate. The version Kojima Pro was working on is not the same game that Platinum is developing now.

That's true — but I think that's a good thing. The initial Rising ideas weren't panning out, the project was all but dead, and then Platinum Games offered to do something totally new with Metal Gear iconagraphy. It's not even TRYING to be a "Tactical Espionage Action" game, but something else entirely. I think that sounds pretty cool.

We'll have to agree to disagree. The old deign was much better in my opinion.

Well, it could have been worse, they could have simply re-skinned Vanquish and given it the Metal Gear name.

That's not to say Vanquish is a bad game, it's not, it's a great game, it's just not Metal Gear either.

From the looks of it they just re skinned Bayonetta. LOL!

That is a valid point Jawknee. The game has drastically changed.

It still might be fun though, even if it isn't the classic "espionage action"!!

Jewknee, the game drastically changed after it was cancelled. It doesn't matter any more. Think of it this way, if platinum games didn't take over MGRevengeance, it wouldn't even be here.

Yea I just read it was canceled too. Shame. They had a good concept. I think Kojima should have made it happen. I still don't think Platinum is doing a good thing for the franchise though. There is a good article over at IGN(one of the few) that makes the point that Platinum is turning Metal Gear into a silly, over the top side show. Throwing out everything Kojima built with MGS over the last decade. I agree with it 100%.

You guys think the trailer from E3 2010 was running on the MGS4 engine? Perhaps they couldn't, or have the luxury to make a multi-platform engine that would run as smooth as it did, that is if it was running off the MGS4 engine. The choice they'd have is to either continue running it off the MGS4 engine for the PS3 version, and devlop a completely different engine for the X360 version, OR, they could scrap everything and make a general multi-platform engine so the game would look equal for both consoles. Either way, it's a shame a great engine that is from MGS4 will only be used once this generation.

Then again, Kojima did recently released their fox engine, which its sole purpose is to run for multi-platorm. Honestly, I'd rather have them delay the game, and run it off that engine rather than the engine Platinum is using in the recent trailer. Not that I care much, but I hope they at least make the PS3 version not buggy like the disaster Bayonetta was.

Fair enough. Would you be ok with this spin-off if/when a new, proper MGS game was announced? Or do you just hate the idea of any Metal Gear game that doesn't have stealth-based gameplay? Just speaking for myself, I could see different kinds of gameplay being compelling within the Metal Gear world (and side note, wouldn't it be crazy if they made a Metal Gear strategy game? They already made a Metal Gear Risk game!) even though I adore the TEA genre perhaps more than any other in video games.

I was skeptical about the first version of Rising that they showed off but I was willing to pick it up because it still looked good. Even though I new it wasn't going to be a real MGS title and that it stared me least favorite character in the series. It being a spinoff or not being a proper MGS title wasn't a huge concern to me. I was willing to overlook that because it was a fully Kojima Pro game. My problem now is that they changed the game play, graphics and tone of the game so much that it just looks like a cheesy over the top, b-rated samurai movie with robots. The concept they had before was a lot better. It had better visuals, smoother gameplay, and it still retained a hint of MGS. Now it's a completely different and in a bad way. Kojima in his tweets even admitted that before it looked like a MGS game. Now not so much.

Its not just me who's noticed this change either. When I looked for the 2010 E3 trailer, the Youtube comments section was full of people scratching their heads, wonder what happened. Hoping that Revengence was a bad joke, expressing their displeasure with the new direction and how they would rather get what they fist showed off instead of what Platinum is doing now. Kojima had a good concept. They should have worked it out. If any studio can make it over the herdles it's them.

I guess the bottom line is that I wanted to like this game. I wanted to support Kojima Pro especially since they don't release a ton of games. But they're not even making it anymore and it has turned into some else that isn't really worthy of the franchise. I know some people from Kojima Pro are still helping with the game but it's obvious this is more of a Platinum offering than a Kojima one. Which is fine for those who like Bayonetta. But MGS isn't Bayonetta if you know what I mean.

This sounds similar to the Duke Nukem Forever story (albeit MUCH shorter.) Hopefully this one has a happier ending.

Looks great. It's the bayonetta guys working on it, so it's probably gonna play great. I don't understand what the problem is. It's just another take on the series is all. And also, it'll give a solid japanese developer the chance to use a well known name to push a really great name. This will help Japanese developers get a bigger foot hold in the market. I miss some of the outlandish stories from there. The new ace combat would have been better if there were more flying fortresses or sharks with freakin laser beams on their heads. They just need more cohesive stories, not more realistic. So, after that rant to nowhere, I can't wait for this game

Remember Metal Gear was a franchise back on the NES way before it became Solid. You could view Solid as a spinoff of the main series, actually. There's no reason to get emotional about a non-MGS game not being MGS-like. This game does look sort of interesting, though?

Jawknee

Metal Gear 1 and 2 and Metal Gear Solid 1-4 are still cannon though. The Solid Snake that went to fight Big Boss in Zanzibar land in Metal Gear is the same Solid Snake in all the Metal Gear Solid games(except 3 of course, that was Big Boss).

I think people are missing the larger complaint here. It's not that fans are discouraged by this because it's not a "real MGS" game. It has more to do with the fact that the game they showed at E3 is no more. Most of the complaints I am reading on other sites seem to reflect that. I mean if you think back to when they showed the first gameplay footage in 2010, fans were reserved but they didn't have the reaction they are having now. Even then it was said the game wouldn't be a proper MGS and people overall seemed to be fine with that. I think the negative reaction people are having now has more to do with the new look and feel of the game.

Though in searching some more, Konami is going to explain what happened apparently tomorrow with a video. So well see I guess.

The thing I don't get, is that if the game is based several years after MGS4, then why did Raiden change back into a cyborg?

He was ment to live a happy life with his family. What would make him go back to being a cyborg, and more importantly, he seems to enjoy it.

Bingo. That's what happens when you let someone other than Kojima make a Metal Gear game.

Huh?
Several years after MGS4?
I thought this is suppose to take place before MGS4?
Anyway, I could care less about the title but it looks like the gameplay as been tweaked for the worse.

It looks freakin' mental. A mix of Bayonetta with Ninja Gaiden gore. Visuals look pretty hot too.

I reckon i will get this. Looks like my kind of game. I hope it's challenging like Ninja Gaiden though.

I think one of the problem with this game was that it was a first attempt on a Metal Gear Franchise that's to be multi-platformed. The engine we saw back in e3 2010 was perhaps running on the MGS4 engine, which is specifically for the PS3. My assumption is that they're having a hard time trying to make the game as polish as it was back then on the PS3 engine, for the 360. Therefore, the project will eventually cancel. Solution? Have a multi-platform developer finish the game with their own multi-platform engine.

Also, taking out Solid and keeping Metal Gear, imo, still doesn't justify making the game in the direction Platinum is having it. The game will be just as good if the whole cast was different. The only difference is that the Metal Gear title will lead to more sales. I HATE it when a company is simply using a Title to garner more sales.
