Well, this is a first for video game consoles. According to ITV News , the PS3 has been banned from prisons in Britain. Home Secretary John Reid made the move when he heard about the system's Wi-Fi capabilities, because it's believed the console "could be used to send and receive radio signals."
Now that the PS3 has updated its capabilities via a recent firmware update, it can communicate wirelessly with the PSP; users can transmit information and media between the two systems. The suggestion came down from Reid after being requested for "guidance" from shadow home secretary David Davis as to how to deal with the use of new Sony PlayStations.
"Advice was issued to all prisons in December 2005 that the Sony PlayStation 3 was barred from the prison estate because of the equipment's ability to send and receive radio signals," responded Reid.
Well, damn. First, the PS3 is used to help researchers gather valuable medical information, and now, the machine could be used to orchestrate prison breaks? Oh Sony, what have you done?
