MW3 Tops Black Ops, Tallies $775 Million In 5 Days

Activision likes money. It's why they like Call of Duty .

Today, the happy publisher has boasted that within five days of being on store shelves around the world, and after the "biggest launch in entertainment history," Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has enjoyed a sell-through of $775 million.

The previous record-holder? You guessed it; last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops , which dragged in $650 million in its first five days of availability. Black Ops took the title away from 2009's Modern Warfare 2 , which brought in $550 million in five days. Hence, the trend continues. In other insane stats, Activision and Microsoft said the 360 version of the game saw 3.3 million players log over 7 million multiplayer hours on day one, which tops the 2.6 million players and 5.9 million multiplayer hours Black Ops had.

Sony didn't offer any PSN numbers, but SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton said the MW3 launch was "hugely successful" on the PS3. Well, of course. It's Call of Duty .

^ This. These numbers are why Activision will continue to milk this franchise and why they will never update the engine.

Haha, if they are putting up these numbers over the next couple installments, I wouldn't be surprised if they use the same engine on the PS4/new Xbox.

With all that money they have, they can do alot better than just a updated engine.

Ok here is a question from a casual gamer that only has ~5 games per platform, per gen. What is gaming about?. When I got into videogaming I thought it was just for fun. But ever since the "rumors and speculations" of a next gen console started, and the fact that no one would stop b*tc…complaining about some devs not updating their engines, makes me think. Videogaming isn't about having fun or enjoying the videogame. It's about who pushes the console to the limit first. And after that we move on to the next gen, rinse and repeat. Where's the fun in that? Do we seriously and I mean SERIOUSLY need a new console right now? or in the next two years for that matter? What sort of pleasure does "NEW UPDATED" graphics bring?

Poor Blops, no worries Blops 2 will top this one as the unearned popularity bubble continues to expand.

I'm still having too much fun with KZ3 to pay this any attention and then there's BF3.

This is a bargain bin buy for me

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR COD SINCE "OPERATION WOLF"
and "Contra".

WOW. This doesn't even include the extra $$$ they'll be raking in with the CoD Elite service!

It's too bad that even with all that money, their production value doesn't come close to matching it. Their games should be cutting edge. I mean at least show a bit of appreciation to the fans by updating that dang engine.

No movie could do that in five days seeing as how an average movie ticket is around $50 cheaper.

It boggles the mind how people have become such sheep to Call Of Duty. Do they forget that the Infinity Ward that made this game is not the same one who developed MW2? Do they forget about how Bobby Kotick fired everybody from IW? It sickens me.

Just like people like TheHighlander said, this game is the Facebook of video games and in this society of attention gigolos, everybody wants to be seen and heard in the lobbies of Call Of Duty. Well, count me out. I'm not paying $60 to play the same game again. I don't care of the consequences to my credibility as a video gamer because as someone who plays all games everyday from 1979 to the present, my cred will always be higher than some racist, sexist 12 year-old CoD fanboy who knows nothing about video gaming.

further evidence to prove that sales do not equate quality.
quite the opposite actually.
so frustrating how the same dry dead cow gets released every year and breaks sales reccords!
yet a better fresher brand new cow barley struggles to sell 500000 units!
you would think that the rarer more quiet genre would sell the best because people are looking for a game to fill that hole.
but, well, sadly that aint the case.
🙁
how the same old boring sh*t like this can release every year and break sales reccords, but enslaved, one of the best games this gen struggled to reach 500K ill never understand.
i said it once, twice, and ill say it a billion times.
profit driven publishers are KILLING the industry!

i was watching a documentary called i videogame today, and it was detailing the history of the first video game, the first console, and the market crash and how atari essentially went from the only publisher to bankrupt in such a short time.
basically greediness did it.
the co founders were so happy, they had a real laid back form of working, come in whenever you want as long as you work a decent shift.
then they got bought out by warner and they buckled down on the free loving atmosphere, and cut salarys.
then ataris games started selling really well, employees said hey why are we getting bubcas and yous are swimming in the profits when your not doing any of the work!
allot of the developers left, one of the co founders started up activision, and atari went down the sh*tter!
shortly after every game company went down the sh*tter because every company was in the mindset of maximum profit who gives a sh*t if our game sucks as long as it sells well.
because of that consumers were reluctant to buy any games, thus game manufactures went down.
i can see the exact thing happening to this generation if publishers dont stop looking for where can we make the biggest buck, and start looking for where can we make the biggest improvement.
what happened to the good old days where making games was about pushing technology and getting a idea out there?
what happened to the good old days where a scientist created the worlds first video game on a C.R.O?
i wish the industry could stop being driven by oh where can we make the biggest push, do something new?
instead of looking at whats selling the best?
ok thats where will go because thats raking in the most money.
