We’ve all played some of the earlier versions of Mortal Kombat in the past. When we entered Midway’s booth, weren’t sure what to expect from the new version of the Mortal Kombat series. One of our favorites moments at the show was actually when we started playing the game. First off: MK Chess. Yes, you heard me correctly…Mortal Kombat Chess. You get to pick your characters and line them up on a detailed chess board, lay down some traps and you’re good to go. When you make a move and that move is countered by either another player or the computer a fight comes up and it’s on! Whoever wins that fight wins the square on the chess board. A Midway representative informed us that more options are on the way for the game mode, since this was still a very early version.
Even though the game is early it looked just fine. The positive points to Mortal Kombat: Deception are the death kills. There are now two fatalities per character with the nice added bonus of “Background Fatalities”. Do a nice throw into a rolling spike and watch the guts and blood come out. This results in an instant death with the gore MK fans want.
Our overall impressions are positive. The game has some amazing qualities, including character animations and all of the game modes. The gore and blood in the game has been increased two fold and the arenas are very impressive. Mortal Kombat Chess is something to look forward to when you want to take a break from the regular fight modes. It incorporates a puzzle game into the Mortal Kombat franchise, something no one would’ve really expected. MK fans make sure you keep your eyes open for Deception.
