E3 2004: God of War Impressions

God of War is yet another extreme action game with style, much like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. But unlike most mediocre wannabes, God of War does it right, and actually has a leg of its own to stand on. While the action is furious and incredibly cool, God of War also has adventure traits which will definitely remind gamers of titles such as Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and the original Tomb Raider. And describing God of War as Soul Reaver and Devil May Cry in one package is probably a good way of giving someone an idea of what to expect.

The game was a lot of fun to toy around with. It had a lot of very addictive qualities; the 100+ attack combos were definitely one of them. The controls were pretty straightforward and easily accessible. The adventure portions of the game are a really nice touch. Incog. Inc could’ve gone for something easy, but they wisely decided to add adventure aspects to differ God of War from all the other extreme action titles. God of War was not only a great playing game, but it was also a fantastic looking game. The game made great use of lighting effects and had pretty decent texturing. But what really made the game look great was its superb animation and silky smooth framerate.

It’s obvious that Incog. Inc. has been working really hard on making God of War a great title – it’s definitely showing.
