Some may call 2011 the year of the RPG…or rather, the year of the Western RPG as JRPGs are few and far between on consoles.
We've already seen Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 and the improved Two Worlds II (review coming soon), and Dragon Age II is on tap for March. Now, another promising role-playing title has received a release date: Square-Enix has announced that Dungeon Siege III will be available in North America for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on May 31. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, this all-new entry in the long-running action/RPG franchise holds a lot of promise. Players will choose between one of four heroes, and will battle for their lives in the land of Ehb; your decision will have consequences (which will alter the storyline), and there is a co-op mode, too. Claiming to have "robust AI," the combat should be fast and fun, with that role-playing depth so many crave.
They've also unveiled the pre-order incentives: if you drop your deposit at GameStop, you will receive the Burning Band of Scorch; a ring that increases raw damage and sets any foe ablaze with any weapon, and the Talisman of the Grand Mage. It's a necklace that reduces any damage taken and gives the player the chance to lash out and injure enemies that are too close. Amazon is offering the Bite of the Arakun (can poison enemies or lower defense), Best Buy will give you the Sacred Heart of the Legion (increases health and pushes enemies back when the wearer is struck), and pre-ordering at Wal-Mart will net you a mini-comic and strategy guide.
We have all the highest hopes in the world for Dungeon Siege III . Can Obsidian pull it off…?

I'll probably pick this one up. Just kind of wish there would be a boom in JRPGs soon
definitely a wait and see title, after my previous experience with obsidian games (Fallout NV, and Neverwinter Nights 2) I am hoping that they are making a game that will run longer than 30 min without crashing
Alpha Protocol was no great shakes either. Spending money on Obsidian games is getting scary.
*sigh*
Waiting for the JRPGs, and since this appears to be a hack'n slash affair, I'm not sure I care for it. I'll try to keep an open mind, on the other hand, it's coming from Square enix, and you have to wonder why these dolts can continue to churn out schlock D&D hack'nslash, but can't lift a finger to aid the fan of the more traditional and closer to home (for them) JRPG.
One interesting thing, isn't Dungeon Seige originally a Microsoft published game? Does this count as an exclusive going multi-platform?
😉
"Does this count as an exclusive going multi-platform?"
In a way it does I suppose. But seeing as how Square/Enix owns the franchise now, it was only a matter of time before it did go multi-plat. On the plus side, at least the original creator is helping with this one. Still, I've enjoyed them all and I don't see that changing with this new one either.
I want this to be good. I liked Sacred II and overhead RPGs in general. Nothing like seeing the massacre on a grand scale. Now as long as they don't bog it down with bugs or broken controls, I think I'll be picking it up.
I pre-ordered the limited edition. It comes with 4 extra items instead of just the one for normal pre-orders.
Coming from Obsidian, I think I will pass.
To me, after KOTOR II and New Vegas they just have a reputation for shiping bug infested games. I'll probable get it after the beta testing ends and it's fully patched up, if they ever do.
Only played the psp game and was pure hack and slash AAA quality, hope this ends being the same I lack one of those games on my Ps3.
I'm quite Chris Taylor is going to finally regret selling his IP to SE after IGN, Gamespot and the like start pelting this game.
I'm not really interested in this, but because it's being developed by Obsidian all I can say to those who are and never played some other game from Obsidian is… wait for reviews, and then wait some more.
It is simply the company that doesn't finish their games. I'm not sure is money the problem or something else, but they get their games out too soon.
In KOTOR 2 you could kill someone and then 5 min later trigger a cutscene with the guy you just killed standing and talking.
I had totally forgotten the reappearing deads in kotor2 but now that you mention it, yeah there was quite a few "how the hell could this slip through the quality check"-moments.
What I do remember was the remarkably poor ending of the game. It just kinda ended. But overall I don't think kotor2 was *that* bad. It was not as good as the first, but still enjoyable.
Kill Obsidian!
wish we could have a old traditional adventure game, like what the old digemon and pokemon games were.
they were just so different, was so much fun wondering the worlds finding new things, upgrading equipment.
neir was good, but the combat system and weapons were pretty mediocre.
