Gabriel Stanford-ReisingerUPDATE: As reported by the Wall Street Journal earlier this week, Sony’s current CEO, Tsuyoshi “John” Kodera, announced that the next PlayStation is at least three years away.
“We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,” saidKodera.
ORIGINAL STORY: Despite the impressive sales numbers for the PS4, John Kodera, Sony’s CEO, has gone on record via Sony’s Corporate Strategy Meeting as saying that the PS4 is entering the final stages of its life cycle. This comes after last month’s announcement that the PS4 has sold 79 million units in its lifetime as of right now. This will not affect the price of the PlayStation 4 any time soon though.
It’s important to note that this revelation came as part of a discussion about the console’s long term viability as it relates to future investments. It does not mean that the console is slated to discontinue production any time soon, nor does it mean that the next generation of consoles is coming anytime soon.
For now, we can expect the PS4 to continue to sell well as new games like The Last of Us Part II, Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man, and Detroit: Become Human arrive on store shelves.
I’m guessing a late 2020 PS5 release. That’s a healthy 6 year span for PS4.
I felt the prior gen lagged on for too long, especially since it started with X360, which released a year even before PS3.
In fairness, any new generation console will most likely be in 2020 at the earliest. Doubtful we’ll get a PS5 in 2019, 2020 is even a push. There’s rumors dev kits have already gone out, which makes sense when you think of the turn-around time for making games, using a three year rotating cycle for Call of Duty as an example.
If we’re to look at the timeline between Sony consoles, we’re getting near that time now were speculation for next gen ramps up.

Playstation 2 – 2000
Playstation 3 – 2006
Playstation 4 – 2013
Although this gen feels quite short, by the time of PS5 it’ll be completely on trend.
Also, what John Kodera was referring to was the sales for PS4 have likely peaked at this stage and that the focus for now will be keeping users engaged by pumping more money into PS exclusive games and supporting PS Plus which is a massive money earner for Sony. In no way has his comment about PS4 coming into it’s final stages got anything to do with slowing down production of PS4 or it’s support. In fact for the latter, expect them to really focus on the services side.
