Ben-DutkaWell, there's no knowing yet if US consumers will see it, but we have to assume the new model will show up at some point.
During the company's pre-TGS press conference, Sony announced a new PlayStation Vita model for Japan. It will be 20 percent thinner, 15 percent lighter, and it will feature built-in memory that amounts to 1GB. Users will also get an additional hour of battery life, bringing the total to six. And in looking at the new iteration, it seems the OLED screen is gone and the unit will include a 5" LCD screen.
Furthermore, the new Vita will be available in six sweet colors: Pink, white, brown, light blue, black and yellow. Sony also revealed that they'll soon drop the proprietary Vita charger, shifting to a micro-USB type. Prior to the conference, we had heard that Sony intended to reduce the price of all memory cards, and that will indeed be happening in Japan. As many gamers, journalists and analysts have said in 2013, Sony needed to do something to keep the Vita afloat. And maybe this is it.
I'm glad that the oled screen will go away. Mine got a screen burn from idling on the main page, and it was only a few minutes;however,it's only noticeable during a black screen.
The removal of the oled means I wont buy it. Im digging the pink though. Im perfectly happy with the original vita and love the feel of it. Plus that screen… that beautiful screen. Ill probably grab the next upgrade down the line.
What the Vita needs is better games. I'm more interested in some of the games that were released for the 3DS.

I'm sure for many, trying a Vita game on their HDTV will only make them want to stick to playing the game on the Vita's screen where everything looks nice and sharp.
depends on the size of the HDTV screen. I think 27" and under would be fine. I have a 23" HDTV in my room, that should be atleast more than enough.

Does that mean the Vita will no longer have touch screen functionality? If so good riddance. I could never stand the idea of putting your fingers over the screen, it breaks the immersion completely.
ouch, no OLED? lame. I suppose it's the cost of having to continue supporting a sluggish platform and reduce it's price at the same time.
anyway, I do like that it's lighter and slimmer.
Not having an OLED screen doesn't necessarily mean that the screen is worse in quality. The high end HTC One smartphones use LCD LED and their screens look really nice. It seems that Sony has found a less expensive way to match the visual quality of OLED. And the additional hour of battery life doesn't hurt either.

No OLED should mean a decent price drop, maybe $149 for the handheld perhaps.

Which probably means $169.99 at retail in NA.

I gotta admit. I love what they did with the start/select buttons. I don't like using my fingernail to press them on my vita. I was hoping that I could upgrade mine for a new one, but that LCD screen… why an LCD? Just release the Vitas that were shown before that were blue and red, I'll love to upgrade to those, even if I have to pay an extra hundred!!
Wow, who would have guess that the OLED screen and an hour of extra battery time kept the PS VITA from greatness.
Way to go, Sony!!! We ask for more executive AAA titles..and we get bad graphics indies games and a vita redesign with nice fruity colors.

It's very possible that the new PS Vita model is using Super LCD technology. People need to realize that there are different types of LCD screens, meaning that not all LCD screens are crappy. The HTC One, for example, uses Super LCD 3 and it looks very nice. Super LCD and OLED have certain advantages over each other. However, there isn't really a clear winner. Ultimately, Sony went for [Super] LCD due to its lower power consumption and cost.
yeah no i think it's a gud move on sony's part that may well help drive sales up to some unknown degree i am certainly interested in the light blue one possibly the white or yellow. definately got me interested with different colours.

oh come on that was the ONE redeeming feature of the vita!
its one of the only devices on the market with a OLED screen.
nice to see a redesign, but whats the point of a redesign if it looks almost the same?
not saying it needs one, i actually quite like the look of the vita, but whats the point of redesigning something to look so similar to what it already did?
anyway, this isent going to do much till the vita actually gets some good games, and one it can call its own!
its pretty pathetic every vita game announced at gamescom was also announced for ps3 or 4.
yea thats why i go spend 300+ bucks on a device, so i can play what my home console can.
$ony really needs to play to the vitas quirks and offer experiences you wouldent find on home systems.
so many games, so many ideas, are just not done these days, simply because of worries of profability.
well developing on vitas allot cheaper so why not take advantage of that and use that to leverage different ideas?
instead of offering things weve been seeing on our home screens for the past 7,8,9,10,15,20+ years!
