Pachter: Vita Sold 325,000 In February

Bear in mind that these are not official NPD numbers, but predictions for those official numbers. Still, he's probably not far off.

Michael Pachter has issued his monthly expectations , and although he anticipates a continued decline in hardware and software sales, he says the new PlayStation Vita sold a very healthy 325,000 systems between the February 15 debut of the First Edition bundle and the end of the NPD period. That is significantly higher than Pachter's expectations for the 3DS, which comes in at 240,000.

This would result in a 24% rise in hardware sales compared to January, but it'd still be a 15% decline in the year-over-year comparison. The analyst also expects an 8% decline in software, with the top slots going to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (around 400,000 units sold), Zumba Fitness Rush , Twisted Metal and UFC Undisputed 3 . It's unlikely we'll see any Vita titles on the list; the thing is pretty darn new, after all. Obviously, we'll have to keep an eye on how the Vita fares for the rest of the year; we still say software will be the primary sales driver.

well this is good news. I hope it continues this way. The Vita is a solid handheld for gamers.

I need to get one more Vita since my brother can't stop playing Fifa and Uncharted. He had doubts about the system, since he didn't like how the original PSP played without a second analog. I hate the process of switching profiles. I wish Sony can make it easier. Restarting the system it takes a while and gets annoying.

It's interesting to witness all the nervousness surrounding this system.

True, but I don't think history has been written yet… next 6 months (including what happens to pricing and bundles at E3) will really tell us where the Vita is going.

I believe Vita has time on its hands… therefore I don't see it failing out right – in fact it should succeed. The question is by how much? Are large sales numbers sustainable in the long run; probably yes once pricing is adjusted over the next 12 months…

All in all, with Sony's long console life cycles Vita should clock up the numbers… but we should give it some time to settle first to really see how it does and what trends it sets…

I think the Vita will continue to impress. Especially after 3/9/12 when they announce all those new games! It's completely surpassed all my expectations. I mean it's not even close! So happy with my purchase. After playing Unit 13 today I cannot imagine what will happen when CoD comes out on the Vita. Do you know how many CoD junkies are going to buy a Vita just so they can get their CoD fix during lunch?! The highest selling franchise in the history of gaming is going to sell a ton of Vitas!

But what does the number mean? I need some sort of context, a perspective for it to be more than just a number. How many 3DS were sold in that same period? Are there other platforms that are comparable, and if so, what are their numbers?

of course its higher then the 3DS, its been out for ages!
im waiting till allot of big titles are out which is around june.
once LBP, resistance, MK, are out it should see much healthier sales.
then october/november once AC,COD, and bioshock release.
only big name we need on there now is ME!
and the new TR would be cool…….

completley depends on how $ony support it though.
and considering its been out for a week almost, ive seen 0 TV adds, 0 adds at movies, 0 adds on bus stations, 0 demo units at shops.
not to mention they sent me a email today saying unit 13 is releasing on the 9th, the US date even though its a AU email with AU ratings.
were not getting it till the 15th.
dont $ony check these things?
i mean what hope do you have of selling a product if you cant even tell your customer the right release date!?
does PS AU actually have a marketing department?
if they do i really want a job there, id love to get paid to do nothing!

I've seen Vita ads, Sony sponsor the TV series Mythbusters on Discovery here in Norway! Now *that's* a perfect place to profile Vita indeed. Loved it when I saw it. Absolutely loved it. It made me feel proud even, for whatever reason.

I've seen quite a few ads on tv and the internet. Hell they showed one during The Walking Dead Sunday. Which is a hugely watched show. Plus all the talk about it on the internet is free advertising. My bug guy that comes by to spray even knew what it was and he's in his 50's and doesn't play games.

I wouldn't be suprised if you just say you don't see things when you actually have just so you could complain and whine like always.

You've seen zero TV ads? Are you freakin' serious? Do you get like three channels or something?

I haven't gone a single DAY without seeing one. And I hardly watch TV all the time. Vita ads have been on ESPN, TBS and a bunch of other channels CONSTANTLY.

It's astonishing at just how wrong you continue to be.

I don't see them very often, but it might be due to the programming I watch (history and politics)

To all the skeptics, pick one up and play with it.

The vita is like a PSP where everything has been improved. It really is that good. The screen on the unit is simply the best I've seen on a handheld unit. Graphically the games are as good from a user perspective as anything the PS3 offers. The browser works nicely and the sound quality from the built in speaker is good. the only disappointing element is the low resolution of the rear camera. Though I hope that a subsequent revision puts a better camera there so that when I eventually buy a Vita version 2 or 3, I get an 8MP HD camera instead.

In the meantime, the unit has the games and apps to win, it does need one thing though, a chance to succeed. What I mean by that is that it needs to have a fair shot and not be dogged by ridiculous and baseless negativity in the press.

And most GameStop's have a Vita already set up in their shops for you to try out.
