What Does “PS4K” Have To Do To Lure Current PS4 Owners?

It has to be the question Sony is asking. Or, rather, as they've already decided on this course of action, they already asked the question and decided the answer was favorable.

Considering that Sony will release a more powerful PS4 console , how will it entice current owners?

Obviously, it will boast better graphics and presumably better performance, and as most (if not all) games will work on both versions of the console, you don't have to worry about your current library. It'll still work. But are those better graphics worthy of another $300 or $350 price tag? We have no idea how much this more capable unit will cost, either; if it's a lot more powerful, it might actually retail at PS4's starting price of $400.

Maybe it will only matter to those who plan to utilize PlayStation VR? Maybe it won't matter to those who don't have super high-end Ultra HD/4K HDTVs? If it comes out late enough, it's feasible that a fair percentage of current PS4 owners might not be that annoyed at the upgrade, and if the new console comes with a bigger hard drive or something… I don't know; I'm just trying to envision ways that Sony can avoid alienating a lot of long-time fans. Console gamers aren't used to this kind of thing and just because consoles have been acting like PCs for years (expansion/DLC, software/hardware patches and updates, digital delivery, etc.), this is stepping over the line.

Well, to me. Maybe nobody else will really care. Perhaps Sony will treat it like a new console launch and produce a myriad of fresh new games like a true-blue launch lineup. Maybe they can get everyone crazy freakin' excited. Frankly, I don't think that's going to happen and this idea of catering to both "casual and hardcore" gamers at once is probably only going to succeed in pissing off the latter group. Even so-called "hardcore" gamers may not be jumping out of their seat for an "upgraded console" only a few years after shelling out for a new generation machine. I know I'm not.

But I probably don't qualify as "hardcore" anymore, anyway.

I think it will be the same as a 3DS and 3DS XL relationship. It's the same machine with bigger resolution. If they start making new games then I will get pissed off, like only on PS4K only.

I think they are banking on the fact that most PS owners eventually get a second if not third console. I eventually needed a second PS3 for another room. I'll probably need a new PS4 with a bigger HDD.

Not necessarily true. If there are already 40 ish million PS4 in the wild then the PS4 will still be the benchmark. Computers have been able to have stronger hardware since forever, but yet developers still make games to play on the majority of systems. (PC development) For almost all AAA games the consoles are the benchmark and they just allow the stronger hardware of the PC to access better graphics & higher framerates.

It wont change. Developers make the games for the most average hardware so they can get the most money. They wont choose a 3-4 million PS4K console group over a 40 million PS4 group. It would be bad business.

I did just get my ps4 a little over a year ago though. So I am annoyed at the thought of it already being obsolete. Might as well play on PC if consoles continue to be so much like them. If it wasn't for Uncharted 4, I might be considering building one.

Go ahead and build one. You can go for a budget build for around $500-700 and be able to play some major games at medium settings w/ mods. Buy the exclusives and the biggest games you dont care about modding on your PS4.

Best of all, with the PC you will be able to play all the great little indie games that make the platform awesome. It's not the major games that set apart the PC, it's those indie games that truly set apart from the consoles.

It has to include PS1 & PS2 backward compatibility, and come with a cast iron guarantee from Sony that no PS4 games will require a PS4K to run at 30fps or better. As soon as games that are appreciably gimped on the current PS4 start appearing, Sony will start feeling the pain from pissed off gamers.

It really does come down t0o this, if there is any suggestion what so ever that the current PS4s would be excluded from the party in some fashion, you have 36+ million consumers pissed off at you. Sony needs to wake up to this fast, and make a absolute commitment to gamers. If the PS4K arrived with better resolution or 20% better frame rates then every game review, and I mean every sticking one, will talk about how PS4 performance lags behind PS4k, just as all those digital foundry articles cite PS4 as running games better than Xbox One.

I'm not sure I would like the prospect of every new game coming out resulting in a criticism of a key product (PS4) because of poorer performance.

If Sony can't make that guarantee then their only choice to avoid consumer anger would be an upgrade campaign with a decent trade in value for existing PS4s, but that would require Sony to take a PS3 sized bath on the new system, so it's not going to happen.

Backwards compatibility is probably over. Sony sells them on their store page so why let you have them for free? Dont think it will ever happen for Sony again since its been what 7-8 years since the last backward compatible Sony console sold and they have since sold how many millions?

Because backwards compatibility is not tailored emulation of specific games, it's being able to take the game disc from a long forgotten piece of hardware and put it in a new system and play the game.

As it is, the lack of compatibility for PS2 games is driving the evolution of that wonderful grey area of PS2 emulation on a PC which involves questionable practices for emulating/using real PS2 firmware, as well as potentially unlicensed use of games on a different platform than the one they were licensed for.

The thing is, like many gamers with a history longer than the lifetime of a decent high end GPU, I have a collection of games from the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita and now PS4. When the original PS3 arrived with PS2/PS1 compatbility in hardware, I jumped at the chance. one system to play all my games was great. Funnily enough that version of backwards compatibility didn't look crap on HD TVs, although the really low resolution of PlayStation games did show . But The upscaling done by the PS2 was good quality and for most PS2 titles it did well enough to be considered a new coat of paint for the game.

If you don't think backwards compatibility is a thing, then I have to wonder how you'd react if every time there was a new generation of GPU, and you upgrade your PC, suddenly 75% of your games become unplayable…

Dude I have huge love for the older consoles. I started on Sega, before Genesis. After Genesis it was PS1, then Sony till PS3. My 1st PS3 was the Metal Gear bundle because it came specifically with the backward compatible PS3. I understand. Problem is that Sony doesnt seem interested. They are remastering those they want to, and selling the "classics" on their store. They let you play your old disc based games, they let you take potential money from their pocket.

Also its been 8 years since the last PS that could play old disc based games. And they havent had much trouble selling new systems without it. So in the grand scheme of things I dont think its a big issue for them. They probably feel if you want to play the old games you can just buy them.

And stop with the garbage about upgrading.

Read Digital Foundry's 2016 guide to Graphics cards. Start at page 2 for the good stuff. It should explain that you wont have an issue running newer games on weak hardware, and the best hardware will last you years with minor tweaks to the settings.

Who's talking garbage? I was pointing out that the switch from one console generation to the next creates a situation where one console cannot play the previous generations games. Then I contrasted that to PCs where every PC since about 1981 has been able to run DOS in some fashion, and Windows still runs almost every Windows application from at least 2 prior generations of Windows.

The point I was making about PCs and switching GPUs was that if the change in GPU generations worked like the change in console generation does; then when you upgrade your GPU, a lot of your older games would simply stop working – *IF* PCs worked like consoles. Which they do not, and that, my friend is the point that you have missed.

If PS4K has say 50% greater GPU and CPU resources due to higher clocking and/or improved architecture, developers will make use of it in games. In the PC world if you have a weaker PC you expect to have a lesser experience. One of the major pluses of game consoles is that you can expect games for a PS4 to look as good on one PS4 as another, whether it was a launch model or a late revision. It's the social contract you enter when you buy into console gaming.

If developers have access to, and make use of, significantly more GPU and/or CPU resource in PS4K vs PS4 it breaks that core point of gaming consoles.

Also, I don't know if you're deliberately missing this or what, but the game library of PS2 and PS1 is vastly larger than the paltry selection in the PS Store. Waiting for Sony to bring your favorite PS1 or PS2 game to the store is like waiting for the next ice age. Good grief, SCEA never got Crash Bandicoot into the store, why should we expect something like Xenosaga to be in the classics store ever?

Saying "They probably feel if you want to play the old games you can just buy them." is just laughable. That *might* be the case if the PS Store hosted the ISO images of 80-90 of PS2 games for sale, but they don't, I'm not sure there are even more than 24 games there right now, which is less than 1% of the catalog. So, if you want to play old games, you *can't* just buy them.

Your right. I missed your point on that. Sorry.

As far as the PS4 v PS4K thought the comparison stands. This isn't a new console. So you wont have to worry about not playing any games, unless the main reason behind the PS4K is for VR. Then you might not be able to play VR. But that doesn't seem it. The PS4 just wont be as pretty.

But again Im not just speculating here about the backwards compatibility. Sony hasn't had it for 8 years. Sony now sells PS Classics and SOME of the more popular PS2 games on it's store. It didn't include backwards compatibility on the PS4. I haven't once read that they were thinking of including it on anything else. So, without first hand knowledge, just going on their actions it aint gonna happen. Sorry.

I would love to see native backward compatibility make a return, however let's face it, these companies just want to make money, so they are going to milk their classics as much as they can. If they can make you pay for those old games again, they will jump at the chance. It's not really 'for the players' then, is it?

One of the things I wish Sony would do is release a Playstation ultimate version for each generation. They can price this model at ridiculous prices if they wish and perhaps only do a limited run depending on demand, but it has to support native backward compatibility from the previous generations. It could even support original hardware like older ports/several drives and whatever else the fans want to see in this 'ultimate version'. If there was an option to purchase such a thing, that would be a true service to the fans/hardcore gamers. At that point, the only issue would be if someone was willing to pay the price for such a model, if not, then they could stick to the limited standard model. At least then, some of us won't be forced to use PC emulation for that kind of experience.

But as usual this kind of thinking is just a fantasy. We're probably better off building this thing ourselves using original hardware (some DIY guy on Youtube has done exactly this).

I always buy the "Slim" models when they come out a few years into a console generation. Either because I need to (old console failing), or because I want to (second console for another room).

If PS4K had simply been marketed as PS4 Slim, with bonus 4K upscaling, and 4K media playing; It would be a no brainer. Instead there's this massive uneasiness surrounding PS4K because it's (a little more powerful) and might negatively impact our gaming experience on our current PS4's if developers are going to tap into that little extra power.

We don't want to feel like we're getting a crippled gaming experience for being early adopters. It's too soon to upgrade.

My thoughts exactly, perfectly put.

I think it will all depend on the price though. If the price is higher than that of the standard PS4, it'll defo be a cause for concern.

The way I see it, PS4K will initially primarily appeal to the high end users, especially the VR enthusiasts. It will cause some confusion amongst casual gamers though.

The PS4 will take a price dive. All games will work on both, some games will probably just scale down the graphics slightly. Just like the devs are used to handle on the PC market anyway.
Not a bigger deal than that.

^ This made think of something. Is it possible that all future consoles will be fully backwards compatible? (from PS4 onwards of course). Since these consoles are like underpowered PC's, I'm assuming the PS5 would just be an upgrade to that PC like APU (or if they go for dedicated CPU/GPU that would make it even closer to a PC…)

The point is, as we move forward in these generations with PC like consoles, shouldn't it be a piece of cake for backwards compatibility? It'll be like playing an older PC game on a newly built PC…

That's how it should be.
