Not every game deserves the lofty acclaim it receives, right?
If we really stop to think about it, we can all come up with a few titles that we think got some super high scores it just didn't quite deserve. What were a few for you so far this generation?
And bear in mind that I'm asking about "overrated" as opposed to "under-appreciated." In my eyes, the latter term is more about sales while the former is about critical acclaim. There's a definite difference, of course. Personally, I'm not sure which game would sit atop my "most overrated" list right now, though I do think some critics go a little too crazy with the Dark Souls games. Sometimes I think they're so desparate to have a true "hardcore" game that they're willing to overlook every conceivable flaw. I've also never really understood the constant fawning over any new Mario game. For crying out loud, they're not that good, especially not when compared to, you know, modern productions.
What games might be on your list? I know many thought Dragon Age: Inquisition didn't really deserve the extremely high scores it got from a lot of sources, and there are those who say too many critics once again willfully overlooked the flaws in Grand Theft Auto V (reviewers heard similar accusations with GTAIV). Then there are those who don't believe last year's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was worthy of the scores it got, saying the game was simply too much of a departure from what made the franchise great in the first place.
What do you think?
I'd have to say Call of Duty. They really haven't changed much at all. Very repetitive and less and less story every year.
People love to hate GTA because it's so popular. Dark Souls is full of flaws, but it's so unique and good at what it does that it's hard to fault it. I'm mean if you're a fan of course.
I can't think of an overrated game this generation because everything has been fairly rated. Not too many highly rated games. Even MGSV to me earned that 9+ rating. I have played all MGS' s and this one was way better than the others even if the story wasn't as engulfing.
If I had to choose though…Destiny! And maybe DAI for its default GOTY awards during one of the most disastrous yrs of gaming (2014). I did enjoy DAI though.
Inquisition is a big overrated game. They stripped the story and crew time down to just a handful of moments and gave us a bunch of empty maps and little fetch quests instead.
Inquisition was such a boring piece of garbage, I had more fun looking at the ps4 turned off.
Ask me again after uncharted 4 is released.
Phantom Pain for me is overrated dare I say it as a long time Metal Gear fan.
The graphics were great, gameplay was fantastic/fluid/excellent, OST was gorgeous even if not done by Harry Gregson Williams, but what was lackluster was the overall story.
There were some well directed moments in the game which hit close to the heart of a Metal Gear fan – but the overall story was just all over the place – quite repetitive and simply not as exciting/epic as some of the other stories in the series have been. The ending was flat out silly – and not shocking since I called it…2.5 years back. The story wasn't just lackluster because it was left "unfinished" – although that certainly was quite unfortunate and not Kojima's fault.
But still…it really had a phantom plot as some others have been saying.
It was an MGS which divided the fan base imo.
This is exactly how I feel about MGS The Phantom pain.
Smooth nice looking game just bored me. I stopped playing it. Too much like Peace Walker for me. I liked Ground Zeroes though.
Other games I'd say was/is Destiny and Final Fantasy just never did it for me either. Also Star Wars Battlefront. Infamous First Light. Didn't like the new Cole. Or the new Devil May Cry. Been a good few so far.
To this list I'm going to add the new Ratchet And Clank game. Didn't like them back in the day. Too much happening on the screen at once.

Nobody "called" that ending years ago.
Yep,MGS the phantom pain
The Division and Star Wars Battlefront are my picks for most overrated games.
Anything with Mario or anything from Ubisoft.
Battlefront probably if I'm being honest. But DA:I is a close runner up.
I disagree with Dark Soul's being glitchy but when people get frustrated because they can't play the game, whether due to lack of skill or they just haven't figured thing's out yet, I get why it would make their overrated list.
DA Inquisition is on my list, as are the MGS games. Also didn't get into the last infamous game. It just didn't grab me.
I agree, there arent many objective flaws in the Souls games aside from glitches and bugs that slip through the cracks. I think it is more people not knowing how to play them or change how they typically approach a game.
The last inFamous was for toddlers or somethin
– The Witcher 3 those i enjoy the game its Overrated.
– Bloodborn is another.
And last but not least any of the indies
MGS5 was the first MGS game I didn't finish, not to mention I finished every other MGS game multiple times.
It felt off in the places I needed it to be on. Story was off, pacing was off because of the open world, which felt dead and lifeless to me.
On a pure gameplay side of things it was the best of all of them, controls were amazing, graphics are stellar and the variety of ways you COULD approach things was high. But it felt hollow to me, and the story which is why fell in love with the franchise in the first place was pretty much absent.
As for the souls games I would just like to point out that the games are pain stakingly hand crafted by Miyazaki(DS2 aside)and he has probably the best grasp in the industry of proper level design.
Item placement in areas alone gives you hints both on the lore and on what to expect for the upcoming area and boss fights. Whether one can see it or not is another story, but the game ALWAYS gives you exactly what you need to overcome its challenges.
Witcher 3. Generic with high production values.
Or anything with Dark Souls attached. Hard doesn't mean good.
MGS5 hands down
UnderTale… I'm sick of hearing about it. That or Gone Home, one fo the dullest experiences I have ever had.
The Phantom Pain was broken, but still had a lot to offer in the gaemplay department… I still can't forgive how they handled the narrative though, recent replayed it to for the Platinum… my dissapointment remains 🙁
Any one of the last 3 Assassins Creed, & Dishonored! Wayyyyyyyyyyy overrated!
mgs5 for the same reasons shadowpal stated above!
Although swbf too!
GTA5 – couldn't stand it
