Rocket League Enters The eSports Arena

It's no longer just a really popular little game. It's a phenomenon.

The greatness of Rocket League can be measured in a number of ways: Critical acclaim, revenue and sales ( $70 million and 4 million copies sold ), and the gaming community's general respect and love for the game.

It's why we're getting a disc-based retail release and also why developer Psyonix has decided to tap into the lucrative eSports market. The studio has announced the first-ever Rocket League Championship Series, and matches will be streamed live on Twitch. Said Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham:

"From the moment we hit the pitch last July, we knew that Rocket League was a legitimate esport. Twitch and its streamers have been an instrumental part of our success since we launched last July, and that made them a perfect match for us. We couldn't be more thrilled to be working with a team that we respect as highly as we do Twitch, and we can't wait to show the world what we can do in esports together!"

The new Championship Series begins this month and matches will be played with the standard 3v3 setup. Everything kicks off with open qualifiers and then teams get weeded out until only two remain. The winning team nets $75,000 in prize money! Lastly, all matches will be played on PlayStation 4 and PC, though "additional platform support" will be discussed for the future. Rocket League has been out on PS4 and PC since last year; it only just recently launched on Xbox One.
