Generally, remakes typically only cater to fans of the original title(s).
They're the epitome of fan service, right? Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it's unlikely that such projects bring in lots of new fans for the franchise.
However, the upcoming Ratchet & Clank remake for PlayStation 4 might be an altogether different beast. We're not merely talking about a fresh glossy coat of paint; this is a game that was remade from scratch and built from the ground up for Sony's new console. How many other remakes have such an immense effort behind it? So, there's no doubt that R&C will look amazing; we've already seen some wicked impressive footage and everyone knows Insomniac is elite .
But more interestingly is the question of gameplay: We simply don't have a lot of games like this anymore and in fact, this combination of platforming and third-person action was a breath of fresh air back in the day, too. It's even rarer these days. The good news is that it shouldn't come across as especially dated; it's not a true open-world environment but the areas have always felt very large and airy. And the ceaseless fun factor should keep even those with ever-decreasing attention spans interested for a many hours.
Some might say it's too "cutesy" by today's standards, and new gamers may take one look at R&C and dub it a "kid's game." That's where the remake could face a hurdle. On top of which, as it's scheduled to drop on April 12, a lot of PS4 owners will be lying in wait for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End on April 26. Still, R&C is completely different, not only when compared to Drake's franchise, but even when compared to most any new game in existence. This, combined with the extremely slick visual presentation, might actually result in a lot more new fans for the franchise. This would also make future entries far more likely.
One can hope, at any rate.
Related Game(s): Ratchet & Clank
I hope so. Sadly I had to cancel my preorder. Could only afford one game in the next few months so I opted for Twlight Princess HD. I will pick this up as soon as I can though.
Not many franchises can compete with Zelda so I don't blame you.
It really helps that PS4 is now the Fresh Prince of Belair.
I actually think this game is going to sell well.
I'm passing. Was not a fan of the previous games or Jak and Daxter either.
The game looks beutifull, however I never played any Rachet and Clank and I don't think I will dive in to this now. At my age, I rather play platformers like God of War:) I'm sure thou it will cater to younger generation.
Ben, do you know what's releasing on April 12? Dark Souls 3.
I think that right there says enough.
Ratchet and clank are brilliant. They will cater to the old fans and to the young crowd also as its something different to a shoot em up and still addictive.
The gameplay is fun and immersive.
Dr nefarious is still one if the best bad guy bosses I've come across!
