PlayStation VR Launches This Fall According to GameStop

VR fans who are anticipating the release of PlayStation VR might get disappointed with this news.  GameStop CEO Paul Raines has just recently said that Sony's PlayStation VR headset won't ship until fall, which would be a significant delay from its expected summer release.

"We will launch the Sony product this fall," Raines said of PlayStation VR in an interview with Fox News , noting the company is also "in discussions with the other two players," those being Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

But an update from CNET , who reached both Sony and GameStop for comment, has stated the responses from Sony and GameStop themselves and here's what their representatives have said:

Sony: "GameStop was speculating and we have not released any further details on launch timing."

GameStop: "To clarify, Sony has not officially announced a release date for PlayStation VR."

GameStop, (when asked more specifically about whether the CEO misspoke): "Paul [Raines, GameStop CEO] did mean generally speaking, whenever PlayStation VR launches, we will be ready for it and supporting it heavily at launch and going into Holiday 2016."

Delaying the release of the PlayStation VR in the fall would probably be a reasonable move for Sony as the date falls on the holiday season but it could also cause a problem for them as it could steer early adopters towards the rival Oculus Rift and HTC Vive instead, both of which are expected to arrive this spring.  On the other hand, the one advantage that PlayStation VR has over both of these headsets is that it’s going to work instantly with the 35+ million PS4s that were already been sold to gamers.  There are way more PS VR compatible PS4s out there than there are Rift or Vive compatible PCs so that gives it an innate advantage whenever it launches, whether it is on spring or fall.

Well, it would be best for us just to wait for Sony to give us the official release date of their Playstation VR.  But if the GameStop CEO's comments were accurate, would you be ok on this?  Me, it will be fine as long as Sony's anticipated games for 2016 won't get delayed again like Uncharted 4.

I thought it was scheduled for fall the whole time. Don't remember where or when I heard that, but for some reason that's what I thought.

I really hope people actually buy these and they start getting some really mainstream support from developers. As cool as all this VR stuff is, it's all just a giant waste of time and money if not enough people adopt and start using it. I fear these products in a few years will be in the same position motion controllers are in now.

Fall is perfect for seasonal/holiday excitement and word of mouth and keeping eyes off Micropoop.

Gives me more time to save up. Plus a game or two for Xmas!

Yeah I think it will be a nice Xmas morning opening up a Sony VR.

Now i'm all excited for the idea of me playing this on Christmas morning. I hope it hits me like the first time I played Mario 64 in the Xmas of 96. But, realistically I'm expecting it to be more like the first time I used the Move. I don't want to get my hopes up for anything anymore, but I also want that next big thing already. We've pretty much been controlling and experiencing our core games the same way since the DUALSHOCK in 98.

I'm really hoping that VR works well. I'm not too upset about this. Like you mentioned in the article, they never officially released a date or time besides the year. I do kind of remember someone saying fall before too. Hmm.
