Sony: Our Competition With Microsoft Is “Really Healthy”

Obviously, Sony and Microsoft are competitors in the video game industry. And without healthy competition, you have no industry.

But that's the key word: "Healthy." And at least one Sony boss believes that's precisely the right adjective to describe the Sony/Microsoft battle this generation.

In speaking to The Guardian , PlayStation boss Andrew House said the PS4 vs. Xbox One clash is bringing out the best of each company and all the creators. He also praises new Microsoft Xbox chief Phil Spencer as being a straight shooter:

"It’s reached a point of what I would describe as really healthy competition – and I use the word ‘healthy’ very deliberately. I think since Phil Spencer took on leadership of [Microsoft’s Xbox division], he has been very honest about their approach. He’s been, in a very gentlemanly way, complimentary about us in the past. But if you look at something like Augmented Reality for them or virtual reality for us, we’re both trying to build a category overall. At the end of the day, there is a shared goal of great experiences for gamers."

PS4 is certainly winning the sales war so far, recently passing the 30 million mark , while Xbox One is estimated to have sold maybe 16 or 17 million worldwide. And after falling from the top spot in October, Sony's console reclaimed the #1 hardware position in the U.S. last month. But there's no doubt that Microsoft will continue to fight, and both consoles should end up selling plenty before all is said and done.

Shaytoon,

If you can't find an actual cover, why not try a Destiny skin instead?

I just saw Destiny & The Taken King whole console skins on eBay yesterday, from around $8 to $14 depending on the thickness of material & vendor.

It may be healthy for them, which is good for a fire in the belly but it isn't so great for the average consumer. Sony studios are going to make great games and mostly good decisions, mostly, but Microsoft drowning in the pool is going to bring down more than Tomb Raider with it.

Well, then, it's a good thing that isn't happening. Like, at all.

Yes it is. They're in a money pit and can't get out. They paid off SE for Tomb Raider to try to get some console sales and ended up making a AAA multiplat game irrelevant and unable to reach by it's core audience. We haven't seen the last of these tactics.

I suppose you had similar predictions for Sony at the start of the last console cycle, when they were getting their butts handed to them as bad, if not worse, than MS is now?

And I suppose you're as upset about the Sony deal with Kojima Proudctions as you are about the MS deal with SE, right?

Wait, Kokima Productions has a history that is stronger with Xbox users? Sony purchased a timed exclusive last cycle that had predominantly been popular on Xbox?

Careful, World and Underdog.

Logic plays no role here. Everyone at PSXE except Bio is a fanboy and he's not going to rest until he exposes every last one. That's his claim to "mature, level-headed" fame, you know.

Seems that way Ben.

Bio, no I didn't because we are talking about companies not the gaming industry. Microsoft has a history of hurling cash down the toilet hoping it will bring the competition down. That strategy stops working when you aren't a major player in sales anymore. Then you are just flailing and doing desperate things like with TR. All I'm saying is we will likely see more, that's a personal prediction nothing more.

Kojima deciding to sign SOME deal (which may not even be exclusivity) has nothing to do with the wire transfer from MS to SE to keep Tomb Raider off PS4.

I'm sorry, World, I don't get how SE partnering with MS for a timed Xbox exclusive is different than Kojima partnering with Sony for a PS4/PC exclusive. Personally I think they're both fine, because that's just business, but maybe I'm missing something here illustrating why MS is so evil other than "because reasons".

@Underdog – What does "history" have to do with it? If SE is obligated to Sony because TR had history on Playstation, why weren't they obligated to Nintendo when it came to Final Fantasy? Shouldn't we all be talking about how FFVII was the best N64 game ever? Or should companies do what they think is in their best interest to deliver the best games they can?

@Ben – No, not everyone here, but I call it like I see it, and I'm plenty biased myself. Steam 4 lyfe.

I actually wish we had more competition in the gaming market. Gives me more options to say "nope I'm not giving you my money because blank." For example, nintendo is the last main home console of the big 3 not to charge for online. I just never liked the idea of getting charged (all these at once) for my internet, charged for the game, charged for the consoles network, and god forbid if the actual video game wants more money.

I have no ill will against the 360 or Xbox1 themselves, but I hate the unmoral company that's branded them.

IMO, it's a damned shame that Phil Spencer couldn't take over the whole company & bring M$'s mission statement back to humanity.

Lol competition implies being competitive or on equal or close to equal footing. The equivalent of a grown man beating up a 10 year old buy is NOT competition

They own a significant portion of market share. They're a competitor. 25-30% of the console market is not insignificant.
