Call it a reliability check.
We're closing in on two years of the PlayStation 4 and if you bought a launch system, how has yours been running?
Early hardware models of almost any machine tend to have at least some growing pains (unless your name is Nintendo). The original PlayStation was a little funky when it first came out, the PS2 scratched discs when the console was vertical, and we had the YLoD (Yellow Ring of Death) on PS3. The latter, while not a fraction as catastrophic as the infamous RRoD (Red Ring of Death) on Xbox 360, still nailed plenty of PS3s out there.
So far this generation, though, we haven't really heard much about PS4's sputtering and dying. Haven't heard too much about firmware updates that sadly bricked the system, either. My launch PS4 is running just fine but then again, I tend to have pretty good luck with my machines, as I've never had any PlayStation console break. The original PS1's disc-reader loosened somehow but my father fixed it, so I was without it for all of an hour.
But how is your launch PS4? Is it still running just as well as it did nearly two years ago? Or has it stuttered here and there? Or, and this would be a worst-case scenario, has it already died on you?
No, I had to send my PS4 that I ordered in January 2014 back to Sony because it kept auto-rejecting my discs. Thankfully I was still under warranty. I still have the Best Buy insurance as well.
Same here. The first one I bought kept overheating. The one I exchanged it for kept having OS crashes which eventually bricked the console. So far the 3rd one has been doing better but I still get annoying OS crash errors.
You have the worst luck ever my friend.
Yep. Aside from wanting some more GB of space, its running perfect.
I'm on my 3rd one the 1st 2 had auto eject problems.
Didn't the yellow light problem not start until the old models were several years old?
Yeah my original PS3 didn't die from RLOD until more than 5 years later, many got it earlier than that but you certainly didn't read about it on the PS3 after the first 2 years.
nope
I just had to send mine in for repair for the auto eject disc flaw. It seems that this is a quite big flaw in the design of the system.
My Ps4 is still going strong like someone on Viagra…
So far so good, but I've only got one more year of warranty left. I'd hate to have to rebuy it like I did with my ps3's YLOD.
Maybe by next year's holiday season Sony will have a reason to make the first price cut.
This isn't something that should be noted as an achievement really should it… Regardless I've had mine for about a year and then I got The Phantom Pain console bundle it was fine throughout that year. Though sometimes the fan did sound as if it were about to lift off my table and fly out the window.
I'm still in two minds about if I want to keep my console bundle, TPP was such a a let down (Pretty much FFXII territory and I know you have all witnessed my rants on that game…). The TPP is a newer version and I get the impression I won't be able to sell the older one for as much now as the 1tb models are all out. So I am considering going back to my old model… Or course I'll regret that if it suddenly tanks.
All the PS4's are loud when running TPP.
What? Uhm, my fan turns quietly, just sometimes it speeds up but only for few seconds
I've never heard my PS4. It's pretty quiet.
Lots of auto-ejects here… I have the remedy – buy digitaly:P Anyway, no problems so far, running smooth as butter. Fingers crossed.
still going strong
Though i didn't buy it day 1 mine is a launch model and it runs perfectly fine.
Bought mine January 2014. Still good. Kinda lame that 2 years is a bench mark or check point.
The occasional crash now and then but that's about it.
Leaving it in rest mode for a long time seems to give it issues.
Besides being to lazy to upgrade to a bigger harddrive for more memory. My launch ps4 is running like a champ.
I got my PS4 on release day and it's running fine. Like other comments above, MGSV makes the fan sing a little louder than any game I've played on it.
Still going strong. When it reads disc at the start up it sounds like it's actually burning the disc sometimes, but compared to the last gen it's nice to see the consoles hold true to the plan n'go principles of console gaming.
No problems yet. My Launch PS3 YLoD'd around it's 2 year anniversary. Though, it's worth noting that my PS4 gets less play than my PS3 did.
It's hard to believe it's been almost two years. It still feels new to me.
My first one had a graphical error that the support guy said he had never heard of before. The one they replaced it with works fine.
Just before my second one bit the dust, I was having these strange texture loading issues with The Last of Us. The textures wouldn't load at all. Then finally the whole system got stuck in an endless safe mode boot loop until I couldn't even turn it on anymore.
i didn't get a ps4 till this year,in the beginning of the year so mine's still under a year old.. so far it runs perfectly though
Still using my launch model, seems to be running fine apart from the occasional os crash.
Still on the first one. Never had a problem.
1st one from launch day. No issues.
Put aside, my 80GB (HDD upgraded) PS3 bought in 2009 is still going strong.
