I'm starting to hear it a lot now.
"Screw it, I'm not waiting until Rise of the Tomb Raider comes out on PlayStation 4; I'm getting an Xbox One so I can play it now ."
Firstly, it sounds to me like a lot of gamers out there have plenty of money and obviously aren't concerned about purchasing an expensive luxury item for one game. So, I don't want to hear these same consumers whining about the prices for anything in this industry.
Secondly, I think timed exclusivity works a lot better than people might initially believe. I know a ton of PS4 owners who just scoffed at the deal Microsoft inked to get the new Tomb Raider . "Yeah, so what? I'll just wait to get the better version (which we all know it will be) when it comes out next year on PS4." Now, though, after more footage and info has arrived for RotTR, I'm willing to bet a few of those gamers have changed their tune.
Thirdly, we've known for years that if a game is more than a few weeks old in this world, it's "old." Therefore, the concept of waiting one whole year (heaven forbid!) for a game they want to play is just too much to handle for many. If a platform is out there that lets them play that title immediately, they're undoubtedly considering a purchase. Now, if this timed exclusivity was like some DLC; i.e., one platform gets it a week or a month early, I'd say it was no big deal. But when we're talking a lot longer than that, it has a big affect on people.
In the land of instant gratification, impatience is a powerful tool. And I believe it will have a very positive impact for Xbox One sales in relation to Rise of the Tomb Raider .
Related Game(s): Rise of the Tomb Raider
Ugh I'm not close to thinking about buying a console for that game. In fact I'm super close to not supporting the game at all.
But more importantly I believe those who do wait will be rewarded with a better price per content package.
I got a funny feeling the PS4 version will be better than the Xbox one.
It sux to wait that long but iv got there are plenty of games to play until the PS4 version comes out.
It'll be a great game. But even if I didn't have a PC already that could play it, I'd wait for it on PS4 anyway.
btw. I read somewhere not too long ago that MS has timed exclusivity on a couple more sequels to this franchise. Not sure if it's true but the source seemed legit.

They are desperate fu*ks
This article gives off a negative vibe. Too much generalizing if you ask me. Personally I know I won't even care for that game come next year. But I do believe The Last Tomb Raider was more fulfilling for me than Uncharted 3 so if this game is better than UC4, I won't be shocked. Still won't buy another console to play it. Hell it could be as dissappointing as Chapter 2 of MGSV, but I wont know until I watch the YouTube movie!!!
"So, I don't want to hear these same consumers whining about the prices for anything in this industry." I very much doubt it's the people who just go out and buy another console that complain about that. Not to mention it'll be hard to prove which is which and not just accuse everyone of "whining".
I see your points but I'm tempted to buy an Xbox One this holiday for several reasons:
1.- Halo 5.
2.- Forza 6 (Where is GT7? The One already has 2 racing sims while we don't even have a release date for GT7).
3.- Xbox Live is more robust than PSN. PSN is cracking at the seams and it doesn't seem that Sony cares that much. Besides, last year during the holidays when both networks were under attack MS broght Live back in hours while Sony took days. Unacceptable.
4.- The One is getting free backwards compatability with online multiplayer support. Free! Just pop in your game disc. Unbelivable.
5.- The Xbox Live free games selection is better. The last few months I have been watching with a little bit of jealousy the AAA games they have been getting each month. On top of that the free 360 games are really free, you don't lose them if you don't renew the Live subscription. Great value right there.
6.- Multimedia capabilities. The One can play everything. From a CD to bluray, to digital files including .MKV! (That one caught me by surprise), to streaming services, and you can even hook up an external HDD and install your games to it (Cheap an easy expansion). C'on Sony, the PS4 also has a speady USB3 port, do the same, why won't you? For an all around entertainment box under the TV the Xbox One is the one to get (I was expecting the PS4 to build on the great multimedia capabilities of the PS3 but oh surprise).
7.- On top of all that, yes the Rise Of Tomb Raider this holiday season. MS is investing in exclusives and everything they can to turn the One around. I'm on the fence right now but things might change in the next two months.
Sony is being too complacent in my opinion, indie games and remasters can only take you so far (not that much). There has to be an improvement in the PS4's multimedia capabilities, PSN stability, better game selection in the suppously free PS Plus games and bring on the big PS franchises already.
Maybe all of this will be addressed by Sony in the PS4 3.00 firmware update, who knows? I can only dream but I think Sony is starting to drop the ball.
I like that some of your points were praising backwards compatibility on the Xbox One and then try and down play remasters coming out on PS4.
Yay for old games I can play… boooooo for remasters! I hate old games that look twice as good!
Because the little but big difference for me is with backwards compatability I can play the games I have and with the remasters I have to buy them again. Not my thing.
Backwards compatibility is a nice convenience at best. When PS3 had it, it was nice and all, but when it was dropped in later versions of the console, it wasn't that big of a deal.
I'm guessing Sony tapped themselves out by paying handsomely for timed exclusive third party content this year.
It's real odd Sony doesn't have anything of their own I can speak of through out the rest of the year.
Majority of those points are purely subjective and sounds like you are grasping at straws, almost as desperate as MS is for sales.
You do know (actually should know) that the xbones "backwards compatibility" is all emulation. The games do not run off the disc but installs into the system and is run off software, good luck trying to emulate the cell.
Remasters are good for the industry, you dont want to support it fine. Remasters do not impede on progress with new IPs or take any resources away from Sony that they could be using for other games. They are all outsourced to new up and coming developers who are trying to make a name for themselves. Off the top of my head both sanzaru and bluepoint started off with remasters and are now pretty succeasful companies. Remasters provide new business opportunities and allows gamers who never played the games before an opportunity to do so, major win win.
Backwards compatibility is way better than getting double dipped on games you already purchased. Who cares if it is done through emulation? That's how most backwards compatibility has been handled on consoles.
Im a big fan of backwards compatibility, however it is achieved. I have PS1 and PS2 games I'd love to play, but since my PS2 died I havent been able to. I actually bought the MSG4 PS3 bundle for that reason. Then when that one died I waited a year before buying another PS3 and that was just because Skyrim had come out 5 months prior and I really wanted to play it.
In my area there is a serious lack of game stores that arent Gamestop, Best Buy, Walmart etc. so the older consoles are very hard to find.
It's the whole "Well I don't care for backwards compatibility"/"I demand backwards compatibility" All over again.
I won't be buying this game. If Squeenix is happy to take a payoff from ms to force PlayStation customers to wait a year after RotTR is released, I'll be happy to pass on it altogether. There are always plenty of other games to spend my money on, from other publishers I might add.
Well, last gen some Xbox owner also buy ps3 just to play The Last of Us, I don't see any problems here, Xbox One also have a ton of great exclusive like Sunset overdrive and Forza horizon 2.
Lets people enjoy more great game if they want…
Cant really compare the two, last of us was an exclusive, tomb raider will be coming to ps4.
If this is true, expect more exclusive games for a year so the companies can try to lure new sales. Um I mean new fans to their consoles.
I can wait for the ps4 version,i have so many games to play an fallout 4 i want more than rise of the tomb raider , i own an xbox one i cud get day one if want to, just think when it release's on ps4 it will be the definitive version.
There are way to many exclusives coming out on Sony platforms (ps3, ps4 and vita) that one measly game wont sway me to waste money on the xbone.
/i never bought an Xbox anything because I dont like the controller. It feels funny after using the PS version for so long.
I'll burn down the studio before I buy an Xbox
Translation – "Loyalty to a brand that doesn't know or care that I exist is more important to me than being able to play all the great games that come out in a generation" 😛
Nah I think your translation module is deffective:
Translation: I will wait 1 year and not buy the game right now before buying an inferior piece of hardware just to play a game that I will be able to play better on my current system anyway! 😛
There are very few, if any, games that would convince me to buy a console just because I can't wait a little while.
I bought the first new Tomb Raider and still haven't found the time to play it, so I think I can wait it out.
oh man u gotta play it
Oh I'll get there. It's definitely on my 'to do' list. Along with the 100 or so other games in my backlog (including all of the Uncharteds, I know…)
Man sooooo many games that i want to play,i don't have the time for this one,i hope by the end of 2016 that i will have the time for it,otherwhise i will play it in 2017.
And buying a console for 1 game?hmmm i would do this only for Fallout 4[IF it would be an [timed]exclusive].but not for tombraider…

Best version or not, it had better be $40. Cuz a YEAR is an oldass game in this business.
It'll essentially be the 'game of the year' edition, meaning it has all the useless DLC crap that typically comes with games like these, which will be the justification for charging $60.
You and I both know it's not going to be $40.
After seeing the 10 minute gameplay on the xbox one, I might just skip it all together. Game looks like crap now. Bad AI, everythings essentially the same as the first and a complete lack of gravity. Seriously, when she jumps she floats for a second or two before finally landing.
Meh.
Im glad i own both consoles. Only failboys play on one console. Fallout 4 plus Rise of the Tomb raider = epic winter gaming
Nah, I'm good I would like to play it but my backlog plus upcoming games can hold me even then when it comes out eventually I'd doubt it'd be my first choice.
Considering what is on tap for the month of November, I could see Tomb Raider getting lost in the avalanche of titles.
Well they got bribed and took it. Now let's see how the Xbox crowd supports them for it with half the consoles sold.
This ain't no COD. I am betting 600 000 sales in one month 😛
Then maybe they cut the exclusive deal short so they can actually sell millions to a fanbase that is much more diversified 😀
lol at the thought of a Tomb Raider game being a system seller, it not gonna happen actually I'm sure the increment on Xbones the day it get released not gonna be noticeable.
