Does PS4 Need PS2 Classics? The Short Answer Is “Yes”

This week, we received some encouraging news that hinted at the possibility of PS2 classics on PlayStation 4.

I have no idea if this will happen but I do know one thing: I hope it does.

Personally, I think PS4 should be able to play PS2 and PS1 games, and I don't care at all about PS3 titles. Why? I've said it many times before: Because gameplay-wise, not much has changed this generation when compared to last. All we really have are bigger and better-looking versions of games we've been playing for more than a few years. I don't really have a problem with this but if I want distinctly different gameplay mechanics , I have to return to the PS1 and PS2 generations.

That's where I can find turn-based RPGs, old-school arcade sports and racing games (no idea why they've basically disappeared now), and other "old" styles of gameplay that we just don't have anymore. Do we have titles that plays anything even remotely like Metal Gear Solid , Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night ? No. We have some small downloadable and mobile productions that sort of do, but that's hardly the same thing.

Therefore, if you want the best of the best in the PlayStation universe and you want that widespread variety, I say the PS4 should have the ability to play both PS2 and PS1 games.

I already have pretty much every PS2 game I would care to have as a PS3 remaster.

EDIT: I will say the PS3 still has a good number of games I'd like to have on PS4 as a remaster.

Motorstorm, KZ2, Bioshock, MGS4, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Ninja Gaiden Trilogy etc are all super special to me and there's nothing like 'em on PS4. There may not be anytime soon either.

This isn't about remasters. This is about backwards compatibility. In any case, I'm sure sony will find a way to sell them like they did with the DL ps2 titles on the PS3.

That's how the news matters to me though. I hardly care to play PS2 games on my PS4 when I can play most every PS2 game I care about as a vastly superior remaster on PS3.

Same here Temji, the only PS2 games I really want to replay are FF12 and DQ8. But DQ8 is releasing soon for the 3DS and it looks like FF12 HD will come to PS4 eventually so there's no point in having the PS2 versions on PS4.

Ah, yes. It would be nice to have FFXII as well. Though at this point I'd like it remastered for Ps4 with Vita cross save.

It probably will given they re re released X for PS4. 🙂

Wait so we don't care about backward compatibility but now we want it? How does that work exactly?

He said that he didn't care for backwards compatability because it was Xbox that got it first. Now that Sony is giving it to playstation of course he cares all of the sudden.

No surprises, that's how things go around here.

anyone staying up until midnight to play 5 AC games on PS now starting tomorrow?

Exactly.

Show me someone who wants re-releases to purchase again instead of backward compatibility, and I'll show you a Sony drone.

I never cared for digital re-releases. The only ones I bought were the PS1 games I wanted to play on my PSP. But that makes a little more sense.

Other than that, the only ones I'd ever consider buying would be HD remakes or HD re-releases. If it's a better experience than the original, it makes sense if you're a fan of that game.

"Exactly.

Why would this make someone a drone? If the question is should PS2 games be re released for purchase in their original state then no. That's not something worth entertaining. B/C would be a better option. But it they're HD remasters, then depending on the game it might be worth buying. Getting to play all the old Metal Gears again on PS3 with a HD coat of paint was worth the cost. Getting to play Wind Waker again in HD was worth the cost. Not sure why this makes someone a "Sony Drone".

Full backwards compatibility is always a good thing, regardless of whether who gets it first. It was a good thing when MS announced it for XBO, it's a good thing if Sony goes the same route.

They won't, though. They'll resell you the same games you already paid for.

If this backwards compatability works like the Xbox One where I can just put in the game disc, download the game and play it for free then kudos to Sony.

Though knowing better, I'm sure Sony is expecting us to pay for those games again.

I will not pay for old games that I already have but it might work for Sony. I still remember when Sony got a patent to add Trophy support to games that didn't feature trophies before so the trophy hunters might have a reason to buy them again.

This feature is coming this fall. Remember the PS4 Star Wars edition that's coming this fall? That console comes with 4 vouchers to download 4 PS2 Star Wars games.

We will find out at the Tokio Game Show.

NO!!! Why do you care to play old PS1/S2 games with so many lovely PS4 games available to play at the moment. Say what you want about game design today, they are vastly superior to older ps1/ps2 titles.

I bought the MGS collection on PS3 after playing MGS4 and couldn't enjoy myself one bit because I had been moved off from that game design and clearly Kojima did too when he introduced MGS4. And I loved MGS1-3, but I just couldn't pull myself to play these games again.

Great feature for those who care though.

I meant MGS4..oops!!! But MGSV has better gameplay and better acting. If you are able to, watch all those cutscenes from past titles even MGSIV and you will realize alot of it is cringe worthy. But I like the fact there was more emphasis on story, but honestly I wanna play a game where the game creates the story through its gameplay and MGSV surpasses my dream. Not a bunch of cutscenes about long winded conspiracy nonsense or codec with Octacon. Love MGS, hate his whiny a**. But MGSV plays it smart and offers us tapes to listen too while we playing the game replacing useless codec or useless cutscenes leaving only the true cutscenes that drive the single narrative forward.

This was one reason I was hesistant to pick this up because I didn't want it to play like the past titles….but mainly IV with its long winded cutscenes. Glad MGSV does away with old tired conventions unique to this brand. New gen MGS is pretty sweet. My opinion though

Hm… can't say you can really qualify yourself as any kind of 'fan' of MGS. I fell in love with MGS equally for the narrative AND gameplay. I haven't played enough MGSV yet to have any strong critiques, but I can say that – thus far – the story seems pretty lackluster (almost on par with games in the Elder Scrolls series). Either way, I feel MGS was what it was for the whole package – not just pieces. I also feel gamers like you (based wholly on your opinion) – if given a loud enough voice – can pretty much deal a deathblow to great storytelling. Which makes me sad.

I'm on the fence with this one because out of all the generations I had the most fun with PS2 games and as much as I would like to go back and play some games that I did not get to play (Shadow Hearts, anyone?) — Do/We I really have the time?

Furthermore, the main focus should always be new games that way we're not looking at the past too much. The only reason we should be looking back is to get ideas as to how to make new games better and refreshing. I think the best way to solve this problem is by making those games available in the PSN store and the only way of downloading them for free is by scanning the bar code of the game you already own.

Just my two cents.

I hope this is a sign digital PS1 and/or PS2 classics are finally coming to PS4. And cross buy/play, not that ps now bullshit. Digital PS1 classics are currently cross buy/play on PSP, Vita, and PS3, but not PS4.

Cross buy is a must. I'm not paying to RENT ps2 games I already purchased digitally via PSN on ps3. Or PS1 classics I bought via PSN and cross buy/play on PSP, Vita, and PS3.

If Sony makes PS1 and PS2 games available to PS4 and with PS now offering PS3 games to PS4. Then Sony factually have best lineup of games for PS4. Certainly will HELP Sony with the recent hard hitting blow of BC on X1.

At this point, that is the only feature I feel is "missing" from the PS4. If it were given the ability to play the classics – like the PS3 can – it would be the complete console for me. However, this would also mean stepping up the effort to get more classics added to the library… like the Star Oceans… and Dark Clouds… and Rogue Galaxy… and many, many others…
