Should We Regret The Loss Of MGS As A PlayStation Exclusive?

You're starting to hear it from die-hard PlayStation fans now that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is earning crazy high scores :

"Man, I wish MGS was still exclusive to PlayStation."

Many will attack this notion, simply calling it obviously selfish or fanboy-ish or whatever. Logically speaking, doesn't it make more sense to bring groundbreaking games to as many consumers as humanly possible? Don't we all benefit from multiplatform titles? Doesn't a game like MGSV help the entire gaming industry as opposed to just one platform?

But there are others who just see the loss of a PlayStation icon. These people probably grew up with MGS on the original PlayStation console, and watched as the franchise remained a very big reason to own a Sony game machine. At that time, there were other massive third-party IPs that were exclusive to PlayStation ( Final Fantasy comes readily to mind), which is a big reason why Sony dominated with the PS2. 2001 was a memorable year due at least in part to PS2 exclusives like Final Fantasy X , Grand Theft Auto III , Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec and of course, the incomparable Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty .

Some of these titles would eventually grace other platforms, like Xbox and PC, but there's no doubt that MGS was known as a cornerstone of the PlayStation brand. It continued that way through MGS4 and then, the time came when third-party exclusivity just didn't make much sense from a financial standpoint. And so, MGSV is a multiplatform game. There's not much evidence right now that proves the game runs better on PS4 as opposed to Xbox One, but nobody will be surprised if the PS4 version greatly outstrips the Xbox One iteration at retail. It's also interesting to note that MGS creator Hideo Kojima has never really been a fan of the Xbox brand, a fact he hasn't hidden over the years.

I suppose the only question really worth asking is: "Would MGSV have been even better if the developers only had to work with PS4?" We'll never know but either way, it seems we got a big-time winner, so maybe we should just revel in that fact.

Xbox got MGS2 Subs, so that was after the launch on PS2 and Twin Snakes lacks the soul MGS1 on the PS1 has, I found it so bland and annoying with them over the top cutscenes.

you still can't experience MGS4 on any other system, which is core to the series so I still believe PlayStation is where Metal Gear is meant to be. It's what I bought my PS3 for back in late 2007 and MGS2 was the first game to really blow my mind back in 2001 for the PS2.

I wasn't aware of this! I always was of the impression that it's been a PS exclusive up until now.

In your defense, Beam, the ports of MGS games never got anywhere near the same level of marketing push that the Playstation versions did, and they generally were not as good. The PC version of the original MGS is pretty hard to play, though it did come with some sweet extra features.

The PC and Xbox versions of MGS2 had their own problems, mostly because the game was quite obviously designed for the PS2 and its controller, so both games had technical issues and the Xbox version didn't play nearly as smoothly because it didn't have four shoulder buttons like the Dual Shock.

The Twin Snakes is pretty fantastic fan service, but it used all the gameplay mechanics from MGS2 without updating any of the game's areas, which means you can beat the game's first boss in about eight seconds by using first person mode which completely eliminates the challenge of the original fight.

So, basically, until Phantom Pain, if you wanted to enjoy MGS at its best, you wanted to play on Playstation. That said, Ground Zeroes played and looked wonderful on my PC, and I'm excited about playing a new MGS game on Steam.

Also to my defence, the PS3 were my first console, so whatever happened in console land before that was not something knew much about.

MGS4 was the first MGS I've tried, and didn't really know this franchise at all apart from the name. So I've just assumed that also the earlier MGS'es were exclusive – also comments and articles on this site has given me that impression.

Most multiplatform games we on PS2 back then. PS2 sold WAY more consoles than Gamecube or XBOX. So obviously, it was known to most as a game on PS.

Plus MGS4 on PS3 makes it easy to forget it was ever on other platforms.

Heck… how many people say was always a PS title. I've read it numerous times on different websites. People forget over time, I guess.

My only gripe is that while it performs masterfully at 60fps 1080p the graphic fidelity can be inconsistent. But I think that has more to do with it being a cross gen game rather than multi platform.

Last gen maybe, this gen it makes little difference. It might have been a bit better if it was a PS4 exclusive, from a purely technical standpoint, but I doubt it would be too noticeable.

Even with it being multiplayer it's still better on PS4 from a technical standpoint. I think cross gen hampered it more than anything. If there's any proof it was hampered at all.

Yes. Losing Metal Gear as one of the big console Titans was a huge let down, however this was not the only game – Tekken, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Crash, Slpyro, Silent Hill, Devil May Cry – pretty much every game that defined the PlayStation within the PS1/PS2 days has gone multi-platform. The biggest problem with this is that the PlayStation has lost its identity. naughty Dog has been the only thing keeping PlayStation exclusivity line up worth while… Beyond that it's extremely bare and in all honesty the XbOne has had more interesting exclusives… The only PS4 exclusive I have enjoyed is Rocket League… Genuinely. All my PS4 titles are multi-platform (apart from The Last of Us Remastered) which really sort of shows the change when I look back to the exclusives on my Ps1/Ps2.

No, Kojima currently isn't working on that franchise and he obviously favorite the PS4 version, unless Konami somehow get a guy that his talent equals Kojima (it's more possible that I bang half of Hollywood actress than that)theres nothing to regret.

There shouldn't be any regrets regardless what systems it's been exclusive for. A franchise this big and special deserves the biggest audience possible. I am glad the series is multiplatform, i also think the PS4 power wouldn't make too much of a difference compared to the XB1 counterpart for it to really affect the overall experience.

Exclusivity is so overrated!!! Fan boys can complain, but the majority doesn't care. Only problem is when another systems impedes the quality of a game. X1 and PS4 have been proven to perform identically minus these frames per seconds issue. I have no brand loyalty so I don't care. It's all capitalism at the end of the day. 😉

To answer your question Ben, yes, I do think MGSV would have been better if the game was only on the PS4. But economics wouldn't allow it.

I will admit though… if Gran Turismo went multiplatform, I would definitely cringe.

I bought a ps3 just for mgs4, although I am a diehard fan of the series as a whole mgs is a series that deserves to be across all plarforms, everyone should experience Hideo Kojima legacy. I am now on PC so I plan on playing on it with my ps4 controller so I feel like I am still on playstation just with a increase in visual fidelity.
