MGSV’s Forward Operating Base Isn’t Behind A Paywall

The word "paywall" is downright evil in the gaming industry today. No game is immune from the firestorm it can cause, even the immensely well-received Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain .

So, when early reports surfaced that participation in the online multiplayer mode, Forward Operating Base (FOB), relied on a paywall, you can imagine the reaction.

Thankfully, publisher Konami has been clarifying that situation over the past few hours, and you can see the updated information at GameSpot . As it turns out, you can use either real-world or in-game currency to access FOB content. The only catch is that you can't earn the necessary in-game currency if you stick to the single-player action.

Added Konami:

"To clarify, the initial FOB — which includes the FOB command platform and all sub-platforms — is not behind a Mother Base coin paywall. Maintaining other FOBs past the initial set of FOB platforms can be purchased with Mother Base coins. More information regarding the payment model for FOB will be provided closer to launch."

The menu options for in-game currency only come up when online, which should be ready to go on launch day (September 1). Konami has already said that the microtransactions involved in this mode "act primarily as an accelerator."
