FFVII Remake “Won’t Be A Shooter Or Something Like That”

This still doesn't tell us much but whatever. Anything concerning the Final Fantasy VII Remake is news these days.

Everyone is waiting for some concrete details concerning the new combat Square Enix is preparing for the long-awaited project. We already know they're planning "dramatic changes," which has incited the ire of hardcore fans.

But "dramatic changes" doesn't really mean much, so OPM asked director Tetsuya Nomura to clarify. Here's the reply (via GamesRadar ):

"And of course, that being said, we want to clarify: We're not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it's still recognizable."

They've said in the past they "don't want to interfere with what makes the original title so iconic" but at the same time, they want to give the Remake a "fresh feel." Their goal isn't simply to reproduce the classic original with better graphics (even if that's probably what the majority of die-hard fans want).

At any rate, that's all we have for now. I'll just repeat it again, for the record: We know it won't be turn-based, Square Enix. We get it. All we ask is that it's a role-playing game first and an action game second . Reverse those two and you'll ruin it. It's that simple.

I feel that the English voice cast they have for these characters is good. Never have understood the hang-up on choosing Japanese over English. Seems a little purist/elitist to me.

I've no issues with the current cast except for Barrett.

here comes materia DLC. Don't want to work for that gear or materia? Just stop at a local shop. scratch that. just pull up your insta-shop menu and buy whatever you need right away from PSN.

Oh. and get your action fingers ready! There's sure to be plenty of jumping and rolling to be had in this dramatically different adventure!

EDIT: so I saw someone online last night playing FFVII on their Vita (jawknee). It's cool the Vita now shows that you're playing classic PSX games.

It had damn well better be turn-based. Spice it up all you like, but that's the system of battle that made all those amazing scenes like the one winged angel. You can't just hack at them on the field and get the same effect.

There's no chance in hell it'll be turn-based. If it was a digital download with a smaller budget (ala Bravely Default) then I'd say there was an outside chance.

But there are no AAA big-budget turn-based games in existence anymore. It just doesn't reach enough casual, modern gamers and the publisher can't make its money back.

Our only hope is that they include turn-based as some sort of "classic option."

How did X-Com: Enemy within do? That was turn based. Are Japanese developers still releasing turn based games natively? Maybe there's hope that they'll try to please the Japanese demographic with turn-based vs action based.

Turn-based might still have a place in bigger-budget strategy games, but not RPGs anymore. There are a few hardcore Japanese RPGs that are sort of turn-based but even those are starting to implement more real-time elements.

LOL we are starting bad SE, first nobody bringed that stuff about the gameplay being a shooter one or something like that, what we fear it's they make it like FFXIII.

Did you read what you said after you hit "submit comment?" Pretty sure this echoing XIII at all is the least of anybody's concerns. After all, they have proven with XV that they can change drastically from one game to the next without hardly a trace.

Actually, FF13 battle system was for me one of the best and would gladly see it implemented in FF7 Remake. FF15 on the other hand… just no.

LOL soo some of you people really thought it was going to have a extreme change to the point it would be another genre like a shooter, I know a lot of people that fear the gameplay gonna be like XIII, it wouldn't fit VII at all.

i think this is going to be ff7 + the aftermath of post sephiroth or at least leading into……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….ff7-2 {gasp}

I could see them doing right by adding details that truly link the events of Crisis Core (and possibly Before Crisis) more coherently to the story, but there shouldn't be a big hassle about a lead-in to Advent Children and I sincerely doubt a VII-2 is even being remotely considered.

I think turning this into an ARPG is a mistake. Not just for the nostalgia factor (though, of course, there is that), but because I think turn-based is on the cusp of making a big resurgence. Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2 & now the newly announce Demons Age are all turn-based RPGs releasing for the PS4 within less than a year.

APRGs are fun, but I've always preferred the chess-like approach of turn-based so all these new game announcements have thrilled me! If they make FFVII into an ARPG, I'll probably skip it.

That chess like approach is what makes it the kind of game it is, or was. It's different if you change that. Different part of the brain.

I don't get the fuss either, it's not like RTS games are tossed in the trash because we can do action now.

@WorldEndsWithMe – I agree! I think somewhere along the way people started believing that the ONLY reason RPGs were ever turn-based to begin with was because of hardware limitations.

It's just like how many people now think all games have to be open world. I'm currently replaying Nocturne. While not precisely linear, it could hardly be accused of being open world.

The fun of games is in the variety. They don't all have to be action in open worlds.

I'm just saying go check out FFVII, those battles are actually full of action and impressive moves.

It's just not the same game without that extra screen, epic long term battles, dramatic camera angles and all that.

making it look or appear to be the same as the orginal is good but it does need to resemble the ps1 version with some of the mechanics and stuff like that.
