Much has been made about the graphics seen thus far in Fallout 4 .
Some were surprised that the visuals weren't as impressive as anticipated. Bethesda has since tackled this topic several times; the latest has studio boss Pete Hines telling GamesRadar that essentially, it's about the bigger picture.
He cites The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as being a game that isn't the most stunning RPG ever seen, but it's a massive interactive world that remains utterly immersive. It's a balancing act and Hines says the team is working hard to create a believable, intoxicating atmosphere:
"Everything in the world [is] something tangible – you don’t walk into a room and see lots of stuff and it’s all fake. All the items are actual items. You set off a grenade in a room? It’s going to blow shit around and knock it all over the place. You have to spend cycles and stuff tracking where all of that went, and how it’s going to bounce around."
Hines added that we'll have complete freedom and the wealth of interactivity should be staggering. But at the same time, it's not really fair to compare Fallout 4 to something like Batman: Arkham Knight , because the two games are trying different things:
"If you’re going to hold us up to any other game and compare us side by side then it had better be a game that does all the same things. If you can deconstruct and reconstruct the world in real time, in the game, and you can pick up every single item and it’s not just a texture then we can talk. Otherwise, well then it’s a bit apples and oranges."
It's all a matter of presenting a world that we want to be part of, right? It doesn't need photorealistic visuals, provided we're always involved and invested in the experience.

Funny thing is, I thought Skyrim looked great.
Me too.
Funny thing is, for me Fallout 4 also looks great:)
I totally agree, Jackie!
It wasn't a patch on Two Wolds II
Skyrim was beautiful. Totally awesome looking. Fallout 3 and New Vegas had some charm to its graphic style. Fallout 4 is no different. Oblivion had the best style though in my opinion because it really had a sense of stepping into a magical world full of peril and adventure.
Elder Scrolls Online has me sucked in right now, and those graphics aren't anything special.
It's all about how the game makes me feel when I play it. If I lose track of time when I am playing, it really doesn't matter what it looks like.
It looked great enough for me. What really matters is that that world is more alive than the last one, bigger, and with fewer repeated textures.
But honestly, Fallout was in N64 graphics I'd still be enthralled for hours on end in that memorable world.
From what I've seen the environments in Fallout 4 look great, it's the characters, the dog especially, that looks pretty terrible for a modern game…
yeah i have to say i still don't know what people were talking about when fall out 4 was announced yeah okay it is completely mindblowing but it was different a good different i might add. but yeah it is always a going to be interesting to see how people reacted but i think it'll be fine plus we need to see some gameplay at the end of the day. and yes skyrim was a very pritty game.
