See this? It's the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Diamond Dogs Special Edition PlayStation 4.
Pretty slick, huh? Yeah, well, it'll very likely never see the light of day outside of Japan. And it just bugs the crap out of me.
Someone needs to explain to me how and why such editions never manage to reach North America. And even if we can't get these Japanese editions, what's the problem with releasing a bunch of different colors? Why can't there be like ten different colors? I understand the difficulty with special editions featuring a particular game; you have to team up with the publisher of the title and so forth. But even so, I bet we could see a lot more if Sony just tried .
We've got a bunch of different available colors for the DualShock4 now. How's about the hardware? If I can have a red or blue controller, why on God's green earth can't I have a matching console? I'm not saying I'd buy a new console just because it looked different than my boring ol' black one, but it'd be nice for new consumers. We seem to be permanently stuck with black or white (and the latter is often rare).
Japan gets all the pretty stuff. Damnit. 🙁
Because McDonalds
In Japan they have WcDonalds…
Spraypaint. Problem solved
I use crayon…
Of course it will see the light of day outside of Japan, this console was announced for an EU about three weeks ago.
I think the console looks great, I agree that it's much better to have more choice than just black and white if you manage to find it.
You just answered your own question, Ben. If there's no interest in buying these SE consoles…for a second time, then why should Sony waste their money in making them in the first place? It is more likely for an individual to buy a secondary maybe even a 5th controller but a whole console? That is pretty unlikely, specially considering the other options out there, WiiU, XOne, GTX something, Radeon…sucks a**.
I'm fine with only having controllers with color options.
Having worked retail when Gamecube's had multiple colors I will say it could get ANNOYING for various reasons.
Though I do think it'd be cool to see more limited edition sets, like this MGS one. Xbox did it for Halo with the MC edition. It was ugly though. Transparent green.

btw, anyone remember the gold colored NES Zelda carts? Awesome-sauce. They came complete with a plastic sleeve to slide them in. Plus a cool color game box with room for a meaty sized instruction manual. They'd even sometimes leave a back page or two empty for you to take notes on.
I remember my SNES FFIII felt like a thick dense book. It was like, "yea, $65 of value right inside this box"

Just out of curiosity, how did it get annoying?
Still got my gold color Zelda cart, yes! Also have one for the original Dragon Warrior too, complete with the monster and world map with gold borders on it. I think I won that one in a Nintendo Power giveaway.
Yup. I own the gold cartridges for the original Legend of Zelda and Ocarina of Time as well as the silver GameCube AND Pikachu N64.

Matt, we had this stack of black Gamecube's no one wanted. People wanted the silver one or some other one. So you basically get stuck with dead stock just because of the color.
Similarly the iPod Mini's had like 5 colors to choose from. We'd have situations where we were low or out of stock of a particular color so people would go somewhere else to buy the pink or green or whatever colored mini their heart fancied.
Sony should get into selling faceplates, that way new and long term owners could get into buying them. Give me a few colors and themes to choose from and i know i would buy 2 or 3 and im sure others would as well
They already do.

Yeah it would be cool to have at first but I don't really look at the console. In fact I often can't even see the console from where I'm playing (depending on which room I play in), so I really don't see the point buying a console for its colour. But as newchef said, faceplates or skins would be a much better idea.
Still waiting for my purple and rainbow ps4, I want my console to look fabulous…
That's one nice looking PS4. I don't like that we don't get colors either. I would really like a black and red everything because it's the color scheme of my game room.
I remember when the N64 had like a dozen different colors. Don't know if they sold well, just remember they did.
Does it matter ? As long as the console works is all I care about. Black is fine goes with most people's tvs and stands etc.
I strolled by that silver Arkham Knight PS4 at Target today and I was mildly irked at myself for being an early adopter. It looks pretty slick. Though I do with more options would come to our shores.

I bought a decal for my PS3 a bunch of years ago. It was really nice, actually. Only 10 bucks or so, too. (Probably sold on copyright infringement by whoever manufactured it… but still!)
You can customize your ps4 there a site call decalgirl where alot type of skins for you console
I've never understood it myself. It's not like it would cost anything to put some different colored plastic in the molding machine. Probably would be good for sales or at the very least, make some fans happy.
idk why they can't bring these to EU and NA and NZ/AU it is really anoiying that we can't anything other than white and black consoles.
happy gaming
You could always go through ColorWare also, they're actually branched out a long way way now since starting on PS3's
