Spector On New Deus Ex Trailer: Too “Violent-o-rific”

Well, when it comes to trailers, you have to pander a little.

Just recently, we saw the announcement trailer for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (watch it below if you haven't already). It went over well with gamers but what does the original franchise creator think?

Warren Spector weighed in on that debut video on Reddit , saying he hopes the new Deus Ex offers a bit more than what he saw in the trailer. After first saying he loved Human Revolution (one of the few games he has finished), he mentioned some reservations about Mankind Divided :

"I thought the Mankind Divided trailer was pretty violence-o-rific, which bugged me a little. I mean, Deus Ex was never about killing stuff. It was about picking your own play style, which might involve killing stuff."

Even so, he knows trailers have to be filled with "action-packed stuff" and considering the success of the last title, there's no reason to deviate from that tried-and-true Deus Ex formula. So, Spector isn't exactly worried. He just wasn't overly enamored with the launch trailer, which is fine.

The end result should be pretty special. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is currently in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

But Warren, in the trailer it said "the world is different now. The old rules no longer apply"
So just go back to your Mickey Mouse games and be happy.

I do wonder if games are all that much more violent now. While my knee jerk reaction says yes, I wonder how much of that is the result of more processing power and technology. Where stuff looks much more explicit and grotesque because graphics are now capable of showing it that way. For example I don't doubt Mortal Kombat would be doing the things its doing now had it involved the power we have today back then.
I somewhat feel what we're seeing now was always part of the nature of the violent games we've always played anyway. Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania on NES was still really violent then as it is now. But it's that much more vivid today.
